Question about a comic page opportunity...

Postby silent-wings » Sat May 16, 2009 1:16 pm

A few days ago I was invited to draw a page for an upcoming comic on deviantart. I have not accepted or fully declined the offer yet since I'm still thinking about it. This would be a great way to get my art out into the world, but the thing I'm most concerned about is what I'm going to be drawing. In fact I don't know what I'm going to draw because the plot is purely random due that a different artist draws each page. There is so much that I can image going wrong.

To get a clearer idea about what it is here's the link to the guy's journal: Journal: Just an Idea

I also noticed that youngest person participating is 14 and the oldest is 32. I'm 17, so I'm considered to be a minor still, but this fall I'll turn 18. D= This comic might also be published into one of those "blurb books so we can buy it". I don't know about having my full name published, but my dA account name would be fine. I'm seriously thinking about declining at this point, but I want some input on it before I do anything.

Edit: I talked to my mom about it and she thinks I should get paid for it, but this comic project is purely voluntary so that means no pay.

There is so much that I can imaging going wrong because (no offense to you secular guys out there) 90% of the artists are male so far and well you know the typical stereotype...

Wait.

What stereotype is this? That's a bit crass. I should think that an equally valid stereotype of women on devART is that they're all screaming yaoi fangirls.

The journal says "nothing too crude! (i don't want this to turn out as some random porno comic lol- so just play it safe)," so I wouldn't imagine that it'd be that bad. At any rate, projects like this slow down IMMENSELY, so if it takes a turn for the worse before your move, you'd have plenty of time to back out.

It sounds like a good opportunity to show your stuff. ^^
I say go for it. But, it may be wise to pray about it first.

Sorry about the stereotype... ._.]It sounds like a good opportunity to show your stuff. ^^

If it's a random plot based on what each artist draws, don't you get some say in what you would draw if you accepted?

But basically I think that if you've seen pages so far (have you?) and are comfortable with the content in general and would like to participate, then go for it. If you aren't, then don't.

Oh yes, I surly get a say in the plot/what I draw. ^^

I haven't seen any pages so far. The very first one is getting worked on right now. Thanks for your opinion. =)

Honestly, if nothing you've seen thus far has bothered you and you get a say in what you'll be able to draw, then go for it. On the other hand, if something about it bothers you that much, then decline it and don't compromise yourself. It's up to you in the end.

Secular guys? What does that even mean? We are all God's creations, some of us believe that, some people don't. That's the only division. Don't create segregation where there shouldn't be any.

Also many artists on Deviant Art are actually female (much more than your 10%).

Agree or disagree, I advise we drop this train of thought and focus on the real topic of the thread to avoid any unwanted arguments.

Yes I am fully aware of that. I should have clarified more. I meant if I were to take the offer the group I'd be working with would be about 10% female.

Well, my thought is the same as the others. I looked at the site read up on what they are wanting to do. It looked ok to me, "keeping the crude out" is a criteria which swings it into a safe art zone. I thought it would be a great way show off your stuff. Thought about it myself.

But in all things pray. Make sure it is what God wants you to do. If you still have peace about it, throw in the kitty. If you seem weary about the project, best stay away from it.
