comingsoon.net wrote:Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) will play the new Freddy Krueger in New Line Cinema's A Nightmare on Elm Street, scheduled for an April 16, 2010 release. The role was originally played by Robert Englund.

Samuel Bayer is directing the relaunch, which was written by Wesley Strick. The movie starts filming on May 5 in Chicago.

The Haunting in Connecticut star Kyle Gallner has been cast as Quentin in the film as well.

Platinum Dunes' Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing. John Rickard is co-producing.

"Looking at his performance in 'Watchmen,' here’s a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him," Bayer told The Hollywood Reporter. "And in 'Nightmare,' he is going to be under prosthetic make-up. You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character."

Bayer called this take of Krueger "Nosferatu meets Ed Gaines."

Sounds GREAT!!!!!

Thoughts?

Eh, I dunno...I guess for a reboot he'll work, but...I feel very hard to be excited over it. Not only did Robert OWN the part, but I always admired Nightmare for consistently using the same actor in each appearance. Like I said, I get it's a reboot, but even then it just won't be Nightmare on Elm Street to me. Just another Hollywood remake, attempting to modernize it with extreme blood and gore and make it dark and "deep". I'll stick to the cheesy 80's movies.

THe originals were bloody and gory, though if someone like Rob Zombie got a hold of it, he'd try to make it as disturbing and squicky as possible... Because the scraping knives and long tongue don't do it enough for people like him...

I wonder if the move ends up being a success, will there ever be a remake of "new nightmare" with the new cast playing themselves... Hmm...

I will admit that Jackie DOES fit the role though. Based off of looks and previous roles I mean.

Hmm, I'm curious now, why are they working so hard to revive the slasher cycle at this point of time? What culture shifts create such a latent demand for it again?

I think he will do a fine job. I am curious to hear what director will be attached. That will make a world of difference.
