Tonight's the night for the Star Trek Prequel. If you've seen it, post your reaction here! I might wind up either seeing at the annual reunion or on DVD.

I loved it, and I am not by any definition a huge Star Trek fan. I've seen a handful of the original series, only a few more of The Next Generation, and only one or two of the movies when I was a kid.

Still, I thought Abrams' movie struck the perfect balance between awesome graphics and a good story line. I would have liked to have seen more of Nero, but overall I thought it was well worth waiting for.

This movie was great. It's one of the best movies I have seen in the theater in a long time.

The ending was perfect, it left me genuinely excited to see the crew again.

All of the characters were perfectly cast, and I can easily see this group going on to make a few more prequel movies. I also really love the "tweaked" USS Enterprise.[/color][/SIZE][/font]

I'm a casual fan of Star Trek, so subsequently I was blown away, though I did comment that "it doesn't feel like a Star Trek movie, and I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing". Still, it was a very good movie (even if it felt a bit like a pilot episode for a TV series) and it was very well made and acted, even if I find one or two things hard to swallow. I'd like to see another movie with this cast.

Edit: does anyone know if there was anything after the credits?

Shame you don't have an option for 5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed it, probably more than any other Star Trek things I've watched, though having seen the previous shows made this all the better.

I came to this film from an unusual vantage point. Though I enjoy Trek in general for the spirit of the show, I have never watched a complete series. Furthermore, I deeply dislike the original series, which makes me less inclined to enjoy the subject matter but unconcerned about a reboot.

So as for the movie: I was alright with it.

Enjoyable enough, all in all. A variety of things bothered me on a plot level for not really making sense, and even more parts bugged me in terms of physics. Seriously, I'm willing to throw in all manner of suspension of disbelief, but you'd think Hollywood would understand that terminal velocity is going to be deadly no matter where you teleport.

I loved it! I think they did an excellent job casting and the plot was interesting without being 'old' or 'reused' from any other Star Trek movie. (Ok, so the going back in time thing was similar to First Contact, yet totally different at the same time XD). I'd love to see more movies, and I'd love to see this cast again!

I am a fan of the Original series (over all the other series, including TNG).

I liked the movie for its action and humor, but did not particularly care for the plot -- I didn't consider it believable. I would have preferred to see various characters earn their way to the positions of authority and responsibility rather than having it handed to them as a compensation for one-time derring-do (this I found to be too Mary Sue-ish).

Shades of Wesley Crusher...

But it did key on what made the series successful -- the interaction of the characters. It is what made Wrath of Khan so memorable, the lack of it made many of the other movie attempts so horrid...

Forgiving the whole No-win-scenario thing would have been reasonable. Handing him one of the most advanced ships in the federation was a little stretchy.

I saw it last night, and I thought it was pretty good. The only problems I had were, I didn't like the way Kirk reprogrammed the Kobayashi Maru simulator. Originally, what he had done was reprogram it so that the Klingons would be frightened by "THE Captain Kirk." This reprogramming was less funny and less interesting.

Second, am I the only person in the world who is sick and tired of shaky jump-cut cameras in action scenes? If you're not going to bother choreographing a decent fight scene, DON'T HAVE ONE. I got really annoyed by the Kirk/Sulu fight on the drill looking like Michael J. Fox was the cameraman.

Seriously, I've seen better fight scenes in Power Rangers episodes. Other than that, the movie was good. Good characters, and a good storyline...except...why did Spock drop Kirk on that ice planet? The Enterprise DOES have a brig, there was absolutely no reason for Spock to do that. But then of course Kirk couldn't have met the old Spock and the movie would have fallen apart, but they could have come up with a better solution than that deus ex machina.

Exactly. Did you see how in that video, the camera was stationary? And you could see what was happening? That's infinitely superior to Star Trek's "OH HEY SULU IS HAVING A COOL SWORDFIGHT I WISH YOU COULD SEE IT IF WE DIDN'T HAVE THE CAMERA ACTING LIKE IT'S ON THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT LINE."

I know absolutely nothing about Star Trek, but I might go see it...

First off, let me state that I was LITERALLY raised on Star Trek, followed every aspect of the franchise (minus Enterprise) with a near-religious furor, and am a total continuity nazi. I mention all that so that this will have meaning: I really REALLY like the new movie.

The cast, for the most part, is utterly fantastic, both in terms of recreating classic characters and simply functioning as an ensemble. The plots kind of simplistic, but it's well put together and moves VERY well (I still can't believe the films over 2 hours long, it feels MUCH shorter). While I belong to the demographic least likely to approve of the historical re-write, I actually like this new, popcorn-friendly take on the Trek universe. Granted, I'd be less happy about if they tried to graft all this action onto The Next Generation (remember Nemesis?), but it actually stays very true to the spirit of the Original Series even as it goes off on its own way.

I have some complaints, though Nate seems to have beaten me to all of them (darn you!). First off, I just don't like Kirk here. The character as written here is all cockiness and no charm, and Chris Pine's dull performance only makes the problem worse. As Nate also pointed out, the script really stumbles over making Kirk the wunderkind he's supposed to be. "Oh look! They're shields are down!" really is a pretty lame way to get out of the Kobayashi Maru (you're right, the version seen in the novels is WAY more original), and giving him his own command right off the bat is a REAL stretch. I wouldn't mind this as much if I liked Kirk more, but like I said, I already didn't care much for the guy. I also feel like the movie breezes over several plot point (which I won't mention for fear of spoilers) too fast to do them justice emotionally. Also, I REALLY do wish they'd nailed the freaking camera down to something.

So yeah, not perfect, but still far better than I'd dared hope.

I've got a number of theories:

1). It's an alternate reality so there is no brig on the Enterprise (hey it can be used as an excuse for every other change they made...such as a certain romance (though maybe that did happen in the other reality and it just never made it into the original series...))

2) Young Spock thought Kirk needed to cool off and took that to it's literal and logical conclusion.

3) Young Spock is just a jerk.

4) Young Spock realized that if he left Kirk on board, he would likely escape and cause other problems (I mean he is Kirk...he would have figured a way to get out of there) so he figured it would be safer to send him elsewhere.

Theories about plot holes aside, I really liked the movie when I saw it. It was gripping, entertaining, and the acting was really pretty good.

5. Young Spock was emotionally compromised and took 4 to its most extreme resulting in a form of 3 and the side joke of 2.

1 is also possible since technically most of the ships in the ST universe arn't really warships, and many expeditionary vessels might not have a brig. (I could be wrong about this... parallel universe and all.)

Nate touched on all my issues with the movie.

However I do like the new opening for a Trek franchise. It makes it for a wider audience and kinda reboots the whole thing.

Also Kirk has two fatal flaws:

1. Ledges
2. Getting choked

This is J.J. Abrams... AKA Cloverfield director... Be happy the whole movie wasn't like that (or was it, I didn't see it yet... I hate shaky stuff too)

I had mixed feelings going in. Seeing as how this wasn't the original crew, let alone cast.
But I think JJ Abrams did a great job. Kirk was great. McCoy was very authentic.
My only question is why is Chekov in it? He didn't show up til the second season of the original series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new Star Trek movie.
Yes, the plot seemed a bit far out there (okay, really far out there), but considering a lot of space and time still being a mystery to most of us, it's not that far of a stretch for the imagination to understand.

One thing I will comment on though; this is not a remake of the old Star Trek series as many of us would think of a remake to be (same characters doing the same things, only with a lot better graphics). This movie was more of a rewriting of the story with the same characters; only with a different plot, but still keeping the Star Trek feel to it (I think, anyways).
In other words, it's pretty much saying the old adventure will still live on in our trekkie hearts, but a new story is being written now (because of black holes and time paradoxes, among other things), so deal with it.

I don't think that's much of a spoiler, but I can spoiler tag it if anyone thinks it is. XD
