Does anyone ever feel psychologically older then they are?

Talk about anything in here.

I've been feeling old ever since I found out music from my childhood is now called "Classic Rock".:stressed:

As I was reading some of these posts this old quote came to mind, I think it's by Emerson, (not sure, I'm probably wrong.)

"When I was young I knew everything, but the older I became I came to know I knew the less."

I'd say that a lot of times I feel older than my age of 22, but then again, there are a few times where I get the urge to something immature. It kind of bounces, but most of the time, I act a lot older than I am.

I understand how you feel, Pascal. When I was younger, I always felt as if there was an unknown age barrier between others and myself. Now, I still feel that way at times, but I have learned to act my proper age.....all I really now is is at this rate, I'll be the old lady causing all the trouble in the nursing home.

I kind of know what you're talking about. When I try to do stuff I did at 13 (like sit in the floor and even get up) I think, "Oh, I'm getting old!" and I'm actually only 19 1/2. But I have arthritis in my knees, especially in the left one, so that's why I feel 'old'. My knees crack when I go up stairs, too. XD Otherwise, I feel fine. I feel young, but time sure does fly!

There are other things that 'make me feel old'. Like, my little cousins. They're all growing up (they're all younger than me) so fast! And kids at my church, too. I remember when they were four and five, now they're fourteen and fifteen! *sigh* That makes me feel 'old'.

It's an occurrence that's been going on with me since I was born and hasn't really stopped since.

I can still remember feeling like a college freshman when I was 13...

It's ironic that I discovered this forum topic when I did, I just had a discussion with a 32 year old student in one of my classes about this very thing.

He told me that his memories of being 19 were the worst of his life and wouldn't give anything to go back to that time, to which I said, "But I'm 19 and I feel like I'm your age, our attitudes are practically the same."

He ended up inviting me for coffee with two of his friends in the same age range and they ended up completely shocked at my maturity. They said I was acting like I already had sex, gone through a divorce, had kids, and was approaching my midlife crisis. I told them I had never dated in my life, and at that point everyone's mouths had dropped.

Personally, I'm usually fluctuating between 31 and 14 years of age at the moment.

I'd have to say I feel the opposite. In my late 20's and I'm an otaku while others my age are getting married and watching football on monday nights *shudder*. So I feel quite young right now.

It's hard too cause ppl my age who like anime and still play video games and drool over the new pirates legos are kinda hard to come by.

I've been told I come off older than I am, particularly when in deep conversation, but just by a few years.

*whispers* We exist! We just put up with the Monday Night Football so we can have a conversation with all of the others who don't watch anime, play video games and drool over pirate legos. Pass the brown 2x4 lego, please?

I'm one of those people who still look like I'm in high school, but waking up day after day with two children makes me feel like I'm over 40.

I find 'acting your age' is so relative, I don't want to care about that. I mean, wouldn't how each one of us feel greatly depend on your personal benchmarks of younger and older ppl? What is it supposed to tell us if we can both relate to a 10 year old kid who deeply philosophizes about life and a 83 year grandpa whose idea of fun is chasing squirrels? We're normal, they're not?

I suspect it also depends on how well we compartmentalize our social circles and behaviours....

I'm neither more matured nor less matured than I ought to be as if chronological age serves as the most reliable measurement of psychological advancement or richness in experiences.

Well, that's what my head knowledge says but not what my heart feels.

My heart can totally relate to the guilty pleasure of feeling more matured than ppl of my current age. What's wrong here is using this "maturity" as a measurement of superiority over others, which leads to contempt (One of the worst things to spiritually adopt. Ever). Therefore, it's best for me not to make such comparisons anymore. So, I'm de-learning the habit of sizing ppl up based on their age.

Interesting. Myself, I have been accused of not growing up quick enough, and every now and then I stop and get out my binoculars in search of the mysterious mid-life crisis. I seemed to have miss-placed that moment in all my comings and going.
