Anime for an 8-year-old Little Boy?

Postby Lady Kenshin » Sat Feb 21, 2009 7:01 pm

My little brother likes cute little things, and I'm really thrilled to get him into anime, but it needs to be safe. My sister didn't know about Konata's porn habit when she started showing him Lucky Star, so I quickly warned her about it. See the problem?

I need some cute, clean shows that don't have much to do with religious/magical stuff. My parents are sensitive about that.

Also, it really doesn't matter if the show is a more typically "girly" show, since my little brother is the type of kid who likes anything sweet and innocent regardless of pastel coloring; I suppose his pre-cutoff enjoyment of Lucky Star illustrates that pretty well.

Boyish stuff is okay, too, but please no trading card based stuff. My parents believe Pokemon or anything similar is of the devil.

lol, I never will understand the fear of Pokemon...

The only thing I can think of off hand and doesn't have really any actual fantasy is Hamtaro.

Yotsuba& would be a good choice, but I'm not sure if it's an anime(I've been trying to find out, but wiki is being evasive. XD). It's very cute and innocent as far as I can tell.

Princess Tutu may be all right as well. It's very fairy tale-ish(very shojo-y as well though). It does contain a small amount of blood later in the story, but nothing too gory.

That's all I can think of at the moment, hope it helped. ^_^;;

Uh, totally cute? That's a hard one... let me get back to you on that one....

But Hamtaro is definitely cute! XD

Aria: It's slice of life set in the future in a new Venice, and it follows three gondoliers-in-training.
Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight: It's set in the future, but follows the main characters as they work on the student council trying to organize a school festival.
Hidamari Sketch: Slice of life featuring four art students living at an apartment across the street from their school. Features wideface: (X'____________')
Sketchbook ~full color'S~: Slice of life following the members of a school's art club. A lot more relaxed and less comedy than Hidamari Sketch.

Oh, how I wish there was a Yotsuba&! anime.

I'd personally recommend Astro Boy... I doubt there is anything too bad in there (There are LOTS of explosions (Particularly key for avery young mans training in making sound effects on the fly (Pascal starts making explosion sounds followed by a heavy round of machine gun blasts)... but no one even seems to get scratched O_o (anime physics), further more it only skims topics that might be considered religious (robots having souls is perhaps one ideology that might be concerning to some... but not me :P)). Besides which, it promotes a healthy interest in science and particularly robotics... that way your younger brother can become a future Dr. Temn- I mean Dr. O'Shay ^_^.

Besides which, the whole thing can be found (all 50 episodes) for free on Hulu.

Robots will take over the world. I will lead them. No one should get any ideas about beating me. 'k? GREAT ^_^!

Also try looking into "A Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar."

Aaaaah, Chi's Sweet Home. It's probably the most inoffensive, most adorable thing in the world. It's basically about the life of a kitten and the family that adopts it. D: SO CUTE. And kind of not girly because the only other thing I can think of is Sweet Valerian.

There are also reviews here that are helpful.

Another good one is Castle In The Sky. Worth looking into.

Kaleido Star is a cute series about a Japanese girl moving to California to pursue her dream to become part of the Kaleido Stage, an acrobatics show. Very clean (if you don't mind a character, Fool, who is considered "The Spirit of the Stage." He tells fortunes, but not in a way that's really important or realistic), fun to watch, and I'd recommend it!

I'll also second the recommendation for Castle in the Sky; it's one of Miyazaki's best, as far as I'm concerned.

That said, I'm going to direct you to the official anime recommendations thread and close this one out, since we generally try to direct all recommendations to one thread. Hope those helped, though!
