New Superbook Series

Postby GraFX Boy » Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:29 pm

Those of you familiar with the original Superbook series produced in 1981, I thought you might find this interesting.

Interesting. This looks promising for the quality of the Christian anime/entertainment industry.

Part of me wishes they would go back to anime, but this does look quite promising...Love how Davids slo-mo dodging Goliaths attacks....that got my attention...

Best Side Character.

I'm tentative. I never watched the original Superbook (like apparently half of CAA did), and I dislike the current trend towards (bad) CGI in American Christian media. This, however, was surprisingly decent. If they have a solid group of writers and keep up this level of animation, we may have something. The CGI could use a tweak in a couple cases, though.

But that robot in the original 1981 version, man, just makes me think of Mozgus.

I had put off watching the preview for this, because I was fearing the worst.

I must say that I'm actually half impressed. Decent, stylized CG, and a team that certainly has some good credentials behind it. I hope that this turns out to be good, and the beginning of a new slew of quality Christian media.

Agreed. XD

Aww, I loved the original Superbook! (didn't Tezuka Osamu have a hand in that?)

The animation is actually not terrible! China's talent really seems to be catching up.

It looks okaaaaay.

I, however, despise everything being 3D like this. And they look so odd, barely if at all like the original character designs. ;_;

If I somehow catch it, I'll give it a chance, but I doubt it'll be anything like the original (let alone actually good). Love the drawn original way more.

I clicked on the link with little hope for it, but man, that looks very good. I'll try and catch an episode of it sometime.

Also, Matrix-David FTW.

Same here. While I am thrilled that there are people out there who want to present the Gospel through animation, why does it have to be computer animation? Anime style all the way!!!!

I'll give it a watch though. Things have come full circle now. I watched Superbook as a kid and if this comes to fruition, my kids will be able to watch too!

I'm one of the producers working on the new Superbook series and believe me I agree with you guys about traditional 2D anime over 3D. When we started developing the series a couple of years ago it had started out as a true anime style show. We spent a year developing a traditionally animated pilot episodes with completed character model sheets, backgrounds, layouts, storyboards and story reel animatics. This was one of the reasons why we hired Disney Feature directors and art directors with traditional animation as their strengths. When we started developing the series, we need to focus on an international market and when you deal with television networks in China, Indonesia, India, Europe and the former Soviet Union, the demand for 3D animated programs is at an all time high. Last month I attended MIPCOM in Cannes, this is the largest selling/buying of animation programs on the face of the planet. Again, networks are wanting 3D programs for their channel. So you either saw cheap turn and burn Flash based shows or so so 3D animation. Being a broadcast ministry, we need to develop a series that has a long shelf life, and is internationally marketable and that is why we switched from a pilot episode ready to go to the Philippines in a matter of a few weeks from the completion of the 2D pre-production package, stop down and spent several more months re-gearing for 3D. I understand everyone's feelings and hope you will at least give the new series a try. Thanks for checking out the featurette and please feel free to contact me for any questions. Thanks again...

Anime-style would've been much much better,as that art style appeals to everyone.

I hear you but like I stated, international and including domestic networks are demanding 3D more and more and because our property is faith based, it is more difficult to sell to networks unless we meet their criteria. Again, I hope you give it a chance and that you will be captivated by the characters and story and the medium becomes more into the background. I appreciate everyone's opinions and especially your honesty.

As GraFX said, though many people love anime, it isn't as easy to market as CG is, and since they're doing this new show with missions in mind trying to get it to the most places possible than even though it would be cool having it anime style it really wouldn't work ministry wise because it would be so much harder to market.

This looks promising and might catch a few episodes. The animation looks pretty, but it is not so much on the anime side as the original was back in the day. Still, I like it. WOW, when they were interviewing the senior producer, I saw Gundam and Astro Boy figures! :D
