Google Chrome

Postby RobinSena » Wed Sep 03, 2008 12:15 pm

I don't know if anyone has heard yet, but Google just released the beta of their new browser, Chrome. I'm posting on it now.. Haven't been able to use it much yet, but it definitely seems fast.

It looks really cool, especially compared to IE. I heard it takes a little more memory than most browsers, though, due to it's multi-process architecture. I'll have to wait until the Linux version to try it out.

Each tab is a separate instance of chrome.exe and it eats a lot of memory, and I have 2GB. I honestly didn't find it to be any better than anything besides IE. Firefox, Safari, and Opera are all higher up on my listing. However, I'll give it a few versions to get better.

We talk about Google Chrome in my HTML/Photoshop class and the teacher showed us how it works and all.

Does it really eat more memory than Firefox? I was told that it used less. Hrmmm. Maybe I'll try it when it's no longer in beta.

Er... What I said may not be exactly accurate. It definitely on average uses more memory per tab, but the lack of memory fragmentation means it doesn't gradually eat more and more of your memory as you open and close tabs.

Oh, and it also depends on how many extensions you have running on your Firefox. Some extensions use an unexpected amount of memory per page.

I've played with it a bit, and once it gets further along it might get a better place in my hierarchy of browsers, at the moment though, I can't give up my add-ons in Firefox and Flock to do too much with Chrome, I did like it though.

I was using it nonstop for a few days and noticed it freaks out every once in a while when it gets to flash pages. Probably best to wait until its out of beta.

There have been a number of both security and privacy-related issues with this browser. I suspect later versions will be better at security, but I'm not optimistic about the privacy pieces. I mean, what is google's main bread and butter? Advertising! I don't really see Google allowing things like "adblock" in their plug-ins area.

YMMV, I guess.
