Will they ever release Honey and Clover (dvds) in the USA?

The anime has been licensed by Viz. They were working on a dub for it last I heard, but I'm sure not if they've finished yet, or when it's going to be released. Hopefully soon!

Since the manga's been picked up by Viz for circulation in ShojoBeat, I imagine its release is just about inevitable.

The only thing that I worry about is, how long Viz Media is dragging its feet releasing it or even showing a trailer for it. They announced at their international panel at Comic-Con last year, that they had Honey and Clover and NANA and since then, not a word out of them.

As Roy has stated Viz is really horrible about releasing DVDs for the manga they acquire. It's almost like they grab it, hold onto it for about 3 years, and then finally let go of the rights as it fades away from shelf-existence.

I've been waiting for NANA ever since they announced they had the rights to the anime and the only thing VIZ has done is release the two live action films. I'm very happy for this but still anxiously awaiting for the anime to become available to purchase state-side. Honey and Clover also has a live-action movie that was released in May. Hopefully, due to all the hype surrounding the show and how much praise it seems to be getting VIZ won't just let it fizzle out like it normally loves to do but instead take advantage of how popular it's becoming by putting out a sub or English dub of the show. Frankly, for both Honey and Clover and NANA I don't care which type it gets just as long as I can own it! XD

Maybe, if VIZ lets go of those rights RightStuf! can pick up both titles. They seem to be collecting alot of different genres of anime as of late.

So, just a semi-related question: how's the content in the Honey and Clover manga? I know, I know, this is the anime forum, but it's the same title. Is it roughly the same as the anime review for the series?

And how about NANA? I know, I know, wrong title, but it was brought up, so I might as well ask.

I've only read the first manga for Honey and Clover and content wise it's really a very clean/tame manga. It is however suggested for Older Teens due to alcohol use, cursing, and situational themes. Though really I cannot recall anything in the first volume that went above a 13 and up for me. :D I enjoyed the live action more so then the manga. Since it's a slice of life read it drags some and takes its time in developing characters as well as story. Plus, Hagu drawn creeps me out a little. XD

As for NANA I've read most of the series up to the recent volume 11.

The story goes as so:

Two girls each named Nana meet by chance while aboard a train. One is headed for Tokyo in hopes to see her boyfriend and attend art school while the other is a musician in a band called "The Blackstones" hoping to get a big break in the industry. After parting ways at the station they never thought they'd see one another again but through a series of events end up meeting again...and sharing an apartment!

So, begins the drama!

NANA in all actuality is also relatively tame compared to other mangas out there but it does have it's downfalls. Volumes 1 - 8 are rated for "Older Teens" due to alcohol use, cursing, and nudity, later on they changed the rating to mature. The rating wasn't changed due to what most people would think sex/nudity/gore/etc but due to the situations. It became more "real" as in situations one may encounter in their life. Cutting, addiction, tabloid scandals, depression, relationship problems, self-esteem, etc. There is absolutely nothing pornographic in this manga at all because I don't read trash!

It really depends on what types of manga you enjoy. If you like magical girl then NANA isn't for you. If you like series like One Piece (YAY!) and Bleach (^__^!!) then this probably won't peek your interest but if you enjoyed titles like Nodame Cantabile, Tokyo Boys and Girls, Ballad of a Shingami, or Honey and Clover even (though H&C doesn't really hit too hard on certain issues) you may want to give NANA a try. Though I'm a One Piece reader and love NANA. XD I guess it really all comes down to what you're comfortable with reading in terms of content.

I really love NANA but as you've stated it's more so a "no-no" manga on this site. I would never recommend the series to anyone under the age of 18 but I definitely think those who are 18 and up (16 and up for volumes 1 - 8) could deal with the issues that are in NANA. It's actually a really awesome story!

But there is hope for the under-aged or even those who don't think they're ready for such a manga yet...the live action movies! They are fantastic and have a PG-13 rating...did I mention that they're amazing? :D I can PM you with a detailed review of both of the movies if you are interested in watching them. They do not touch on everything that is in the manga. It's more 'lighter fair' rather then darker. ^__^

Hope this helps you!

I saw the live action movie in Hastings, too! It looked kind of scary but it was nice that they would carry such a thing.

I saw the live action movie in China, but of course, it didn't have any English in it so I gave up on it...however, if it's here in the States....*makes pleading eyes at boyfriend to rent for her*

There was an article about both of the series being dubbed in... the April issue of Shojo Beat, I think? They interviewed a few of the voice actors and stuff. Although we've yet to see any trailers released, at least we know they're still being worked on. I just hope it doesn't take them too much longer. I'm getting impatient. :[

And I'd really like to see the live-action movie. The J-drama is supposedly good, as well.

The Honey and Clover drama made me cry, an' I don't know why.

It was very sweet and the characters were hysterical (but often in a really quiet way). Well, Narumi Riko is pretty much my favorite Japanese actress, so I'm biased towards the drama (but I'll admit her character was pretty flat). But I hear it deviates from the manga quite a bit.

Hmm...the only thing I think I'd have an issue with is the cursing, particularly if they take God's name in vain (or pair a certain word with it...which I've seen in a teen-rated manga--Strawberry Marshmallow vol. 2--and I wasn't happy with it at all >_<)

Ah. I thought I saw a high rating on the back. Not sure I'd be completely comfortable with it, though...'cutting' just doesn't sit too well with me. I mean, I know I'm a One Piece fan, but, heh...there's only so much one can take in a manga,
and Zoro cutting open his own side to reopen his wound in one of the first few manga books (he was fighting Cabaji the Acrobat) was pretty, erm...o_o I guess self-inflicted pain is kind of hard to look at, particularly if it involves sharp cutting objects.
Actually, I'm more of a slice-of-life/comedy fan, with a dash of (CLEAN!!) romance and maybe light fantasy thrown in. I'm actually amazed I like something of One Piece's caliber, considering I'm not a regular fantasy or heavy action fan. I liked most of what I saw in Kaleido Star (just didn't like Fool using Tarot cards), I like Lucky Star, Angelic Layer (the anime) was good, and Azumanga Daioh was the first manga I bought. And Yotsuba&! is just adorable, though I'm not sure why they've apparently halted translation of the series...hmm...

But yeah, what drew me into One Piece was the characters]I really love NANA but as you've stated it's more so a "no-no" manga on this site. I did? *is confused* When did I say that?

Hm...yeah, I'd appreciate you sending me the reviews. I could always check for the movies and see if anywhere nearby has them to rent.

Hope this helps you!

Yes, it does. Thanks! ^_^

Yeah, NANA does have one or two taking of the Lord names in vain but it's not all through it. Actually, the first volume of the manga had the most cursing and the others had a few scattered throughout.

Yeah, they really don't get into the actual cutting you just know one person is a cutter by the scars they have...it's moreso about this person finding "healing" and wanting to break those ways. I absolutely love One Piece there is just something about it. XD but yeah I know what you mean about that part it was alittle hard to take.

I love slice of life manga myself. NANA is very slice of life but as stated it's what you're comfortable with. I'd recommend Aria and Aqua to you. It's rated 16 and up but there is nothing in it. No, Lord's name in vain and only 1 d word, that was it. Aqua the prequel is rated 13 and up. You should check it out if you liked Kaleido Star or Azumanga Daioh. It's lovely. You should also check out Yotsuba&! *__*

AsianBlossom (post: 1258160) wrote:But yeah, what drew me into One Piece was the characters]

Much like One Piece NANA is very character driven. I love most of the characters but also hate a few. XD I wish One Piece would delve deeper into Nami. Granted, they've gone over her past but I want more same with Zolo.
