Flip-flops...?

Ok, I was asking my dad if it would be ok if I wore a new out fit to church, which consisted of flip-flops. He had no problem with it except for the shoes . He said flip-flops are NOT church apprpriate. He said sandals are ok, though. Well, aren't flip-flops plastic/foam sandals? Please hear both sides and tell me what you think!!!

His argument: "[Flip-flops] are pool shoes, and are too casual to be worn in the house of God.

My argument: They're PLASTIC sandals, and they perfectly matched the shirt I WAS going to wear with them. Plus, they don't leave blisters on my feet like my other dress shoes do.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!!
(Please don't think me shallow. I was VERY proud of my self for finding something, ANYTHING, that matched .)

Well I think the more important issue here is not your choice of footwear (I personally love sandals too), but more about obedience. God commanded us to honor our parents and obey them--for most people they attach a "until you live on your own" at the end of that. But regardless, God put your father above you in authority...so that means you need to follow his guidelines. At least until you are an adult and can respectfully disagree. I think a humble attitude and a pliant heart will make much more of a statement to both your father and the Lord than your powers of reasoning.

I don't think Jesus would be offended by the foot wear you take into church (unless they said something like 'satan worshipper' on the side) Theres a guy at our church who sometimes doesn't even wear shoes to church (dunno how he manages that though, I'd find it pretty unconfortable!)

Anyway, maybe that's the case. Or, sometimes, people don't consider being casual giving God your all on His day.

Toes are sedctive?! All I think is that they can smell, bad. Anyways, thanks for all the replies. I wasn't planning on disobeyng, but some old person once told me that God dosn't care whether you go to church dressed for a ball, or wearing cutoffs and a tank top. The only thing that matters is that you show resect and love for our savior. I guess she's right. I just wanted to see what other people said. Thanks again!

The most most important issue is honoring your father and mother; but in purely objecctive terms, I don't see a problem with flip-flops in church. Then again, I never wear flip-flops or sandals in public. It's just not my style...

This issue is resolved now, but I'll speak on the subject in the title.

I generally wear flip flops unless I have a reason not to (but more often I don't wear any manner of footwear). Such reasons would be if I intend to run (my current pair makes running nearly impossible, as they will fly off) or if there is snow on the ground. This isn't a style issue (I couldn't care less), they're simply just much quicker to remove or put on than other shoes. Which is why I'm occasionally seen in sub zero (Celsius) weather calmly walking in flip flops.

I'm ok with wearing flip flops to church but anyone here who wears short shorts to church? now that is ONE big no-no.

Well, since every one has already touched on honoring your parents and stated their opinion surrounding flip-flops, I will only add one thing.

I consider flip-flops, or athletic sandles for that matter, very informal. Not wrong to wear to church, less your congregations consencious is to dress formal, in which case you should chose a viable substitute.

Very much the same way, loafers are more formal than walking shoes, though they both serve a simmiler perpouse.

But take heart, most "dress" sandles can be found in neutral colors, that go with almost anything. (except some floresents) You should still have no trouble creating an outfit that matches. I am not that great at matching my cloaths (acording to my wife), but just remember not to wear Black with Navey Blue, red with green, blue with orange, and purple with yellow, and you should be ok.^^

Also, consider that when you go to worship God, maybe you would want to dress as nice as you could, like you were going to visit a forien King at his home.
Note: I do not always do this, but it seams like a good idea. ^^

I like your analogy of visiting a foreign King at his home, but when I go to church I view myself more as a soldier temporarily at his commander's base. I'd like to think both God and I are interested in functionality.
