Guinea Pigs!

Postby Doubleshadow » Sat Jul 19, 2008 1:35 pm

I'm moving to a new apartment where I can have a pet in a cage and I've been thinking about getting a guinea pig. My roommate has a hamster named Yang, so we'd have two critters in the house. I've had cats, dogs, and hamsters, but never a guinea pig. Does anybody have any suggestions for getting and taking care of a guinea pig?

Guinea pigs make great pets. My friend Lori had one named Goober. He was sweet.
They need shavings at the bottom of their cage and a little guinea pig house. You can buy pre-packaged food formulated for them from PetsMart --you will need to add a vitamin supplement to the water bottle (you can get this at PetsMart also). Then make sure to give fresh vegetables now and then. All the bathing they need is a good wiping down with wipes.

I hope this helps. This is all I can remember from what Lori told me. Good luck! (Rats make great pets too if this doesn't work out)
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Awesomeness! Guinea pigs make great pets and they're usually pretty sociable (mine got along great with my cat - they used to sleep together, play together, eat each other's food and water, ect. XD), so if you roommate has one they would make a good pair. They're not too different from a hamster, except that they can't produce their own vitamin C so remember to give them some kind of supplement once a day. You can use a quarter of an orange, liquid C (although this really isn't too good because it's water soluble so most of it will get stuck in the bottom of their water bowel/bottle and you'll kinda have to guess at how much they're getting), or a quarter of a human C tablet. For my piggy, I went with the human C tabs since they were the easiest to give and he loved the taste. Just smash it into fours with the end of a knife or something and give the piggy a piece every day - around 20-30 mg.

Shoeboxes actually make the best G. Pig hideaway houses... and they can eat 'em too!

They're also very smart and can even learn some basic commands. They'll definitely learn to come by calling their name and you can use noises like whistles/car keys to train them to do simple tricks like beg and impress all your friends! They also love to be brushed and cuddled, and they bathe just like cats. Plus they make the coolest noises.

Hope you'll find a good piggy friend! I'd recomended checking out shelters and small animal rescues in your area before you hit Petsmart. *undisguised plug* ^___^
