Macbook or Mac mini?

Postby Danderson » Thu Jun 26, 2008 12:38 pm

I'm wondering from anyone who has used Final Cut Express or Pro on a Macbook or Mac Mini......

Which one is the better computer to use it on?......

I have external hard drives, so space for video isn't an issue for me.....I'm mainly thinking in terms of better performance....Thank u.....:thumb:

Well, look at the specifications for both and make your decision that way.

This are the two areas that I would recomend on both.

Macbook *Apple website, I have heard it sells them cheaper on other, I guess the same goes for the mac mini.*

4Gb 667 mhz SDRAM ram.

2,4ghz Core 2 duo

250Gb storage

Applecare protection

Modem and Magsafe and Apple remote

- 1965$

Mac mini

2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB

160GB Serial ATA drive

Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mouse

Apple USB Modem

AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac mini (w/or w/o Display) - Auto-enroll

Accessory kit

-1245$

If the mac mini looks better to you. Then I would recomend to wait since it is probably the next thing they are going to update. *Seeing that it is the most outdated one in terms of the regular apple updates then it would only make sense.*

Macs sell for the same price across the board unless you're being them used or refurbished. Part of Apple's total control over their product extends to pricing. They do not accept sales or coupons or price reductions in any aspect of the market for new equipment, so you'll find they're pretty much the same price everywhere you go.

Personally, I think you'd find the better deal in the Macbook, but if you're looking for more power than portability I'd honestly suggest an iMac. They're around the same price as the Macbooks and you're getting more bang for your buck.

I'd say either, really. I love my Mini, but I'll be getting a Macbook soon to take to school. I think it really depends on how much portability you want. You can hook up a Macbook to a larger screen, so there won't be an issue with screen size there. Also, Minis are cheaper if you already have a keyboard, monitor, and mouse (these do not have to be Apple products). So really, it's up to you and whichever you think has the best features. XD

I think alot of what I'm looking for is which one would be better performance wise for someone getting into filmmaking?

At the moment, I don't have enough for one of the more preferred and more powerful macs (iMac).......

Well, you did say you were considering a Macbook and if you're going with brand new equipment the iMacs really honestly are around the same price and with better power. :thumb:

If you feel you really need the higher power box to do your encoding, you'll probably want a Mac Book Pro. The mac Mini's really aren't designed for high-end editing. I've done *some* on them, and it's like pulling teeth. The out-of-the-box minis have less RAM, slower drives, and less powerful processors (at least they did when I was checking.)

Of course, you'll spend 2-3 times the money - if you need the power. YMMV.
