It's not costing the petroluem companies any (or much) more to extract, but they're getting more and more money for doing the same thing. It is not a 'highly competitive' market!

There are probably a lot of reasons for this, but I'm guessing that oil companies have collectively discovered is that western lifestyle, particularly U.S. lifestyle, necessitates a high demand for oil and they can push prices high because supply is dropping. The goal of any business is to maximize profit by charging no less than what people are willing and able to pay, and people are willing to pay a lot to maintain their lifestyle. We complain about the prices, yet we still shell out the cash because we think we have to (whether we actually do or not is a different and more subjective story).

My family owns mineral rights in NE Montana. There's oil, natural gas, and oil shale under that land.

well unfortunately I do not think we are going to change...the IRS stimulus check for the economy check was bought on loan from China.....so yea...we are a definite weak country economically at the moment and frankly I would prepare for the worst to come but that's my opinion of course

Part of me thinks because of where we've gotten, at this rate, it'll be too late if we even get to drill there or anywhere in the U.S.......

But the other part of me thinks, until we find an alternative, we still need gasoline the power our cars....

I also think it's scary and ridiculous that congress doesn't even seem to care, thinking that blaming oil execs and making a set price for fuel will solve the problem.....

Mining in Alaska, by any means, won't solve the problem, but it should make it easier for families until we find some other type of fuel to rely on.....

The government can't easily tax used cooking oil, that's why.

Also, you'd need lots of it. And I really don't think restaurant would use enough to meet demand. Which would probably mean that we'd be sometimes using unused cooking oil, which is a "biofuel", and that requires crops and the food shortage, and oh no!

I do like the idea of nuclear-powered cars though.

Hey, I'm not suggesting it would be a replacement, but as a supplement? Heck yes.

I'm thinking nuclear power is best left in heavily-shielded nuclear plants. With all the idiot drivers here, the last thing we need is everyone running around in dirty bombs with wheels.

Oh, I was discussing the whole drilling issue. I don't just limit myself to ANWR because, well, that's not my gig.

My whole gig is that we need to focus on the Bakken Formation first, the offshore platforms next, THEN that little sliver in Alaska.

Another solution not put forth by the rest of the world, and while it would involve drilling, it may turn out to be cheaper, is to get cars that run on propane. $1.39/gal where I'm at for a gallon of propane, and they get great gas mileage.
