actually, doing stuff like that really does help ME pay attention. i doodle all the time and it keeps my mind on what is going on around me. XD
plus, note taking is sooooo boring.

And note-taking may be boring as compared to doodling, but details are often critically important in court cases. Unless your memory is just that good (which would be unusual in my experience), it's important to take notes.

According to this excerpt from a criminal law journal article (http://www.jstor.org/pss/1139806), it's not keeping the notes in the courtroom that's a concern, but rather that people may be distracted from other evidence while they're writing, that jury members with notes would likely rely strongly on the notes even if they have inaccuracies in their notes, and that a corrupt juror would have a better opportunity to influence the other jury members during deliberation with false notes.
It seems like jury note-taking can be allowed by U.S. judges, but the judge is given the choice whether to forbid or allow note-taking based on the case and the judge's discretion.
