Say No To Crossplay!

Postby oro! » Wed Jun 11, 2008 8:38 pm

Okay, so I've been looking at some cosplay pics, trying to entertain myself in a way that doesn't cost me in a way that actually going to a con would(besides the fact that there are no cons going on in my area). I literally spent like hours looking through these pics. I've kinda forgotten what crazy people there are dressing up at these cons!(not to say anything about my attempts).

In any case, I've come to this conclusion after much deliberation, understanding the implications. Girls should not, I repeat, should not crossplay. Most of us know that it's creepy when guys do, but I now see why it is the same for girls. I mean, think about it: if they dress up as their favorite bishounen(and are accurate), then their girl friends could like be drooling over a girl. It's really disconcerting.

I understand that the majority of those who sew are girls and thus they make costumes for themselves, but I think that they should take a guy friend's measurements, construct the costume, and drag him along to the con. I mean, that would make for a much less uncomfortable situation. THERE ARE COOL GIRLS THAT GIRLS CAN DRESS UP AS!

It's just so awkward to be like, "That's such a hot....girl, oh, ugh, AGHH!" Yeah, like that.
Anyway, opposition, other people like me? Thoughts, etc.?

Lol, I saw a guy dressed up as Chi... I think it was a guy.. It didn't look like a girl.. that's for sure XDDD

Hmmm, well.. you can kinda tell if it's a girl in a guys costume o.o Then again, it would depend what angle you see them at, but still xD;

Hmmm, very puzzling indeed ^^

Debitt may have an issue with that 0.o

Okay okay okay. While a lot of anime guys look quite girly and girls can pull those off, lately girls have been crossing as more and more masculine characters. I once saw a girl crossplay as Simon from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (post timeskip version... the outfit that happens to be a jacket WITHOUT A SHIRT).

Seriously? NO. Just no. If this is a truly egalitarian society, such things would be equally frowned upon.

It doesn't bother me when you can TELL that it's a girl cosplaying, I mean most of the time it's pretty obvious. But..it gets a little scary when you have to sit there for a moment and think "Is this a guy or a girl??"

So, just because some do this, all females and males shouldn't cosplay at all? :shady:

You do realize there are at least a couple female crossplayers here, and this is mainly an issue of personal conviction, right? Unless you can point me to a place in the Bible where it says "thou shalt not undertake any activity that would cause anyone else who may come into vague contact with you to lust", in which case I will stand most humbly corrected.

Most of the time, crossplay isn't intended to deceive in a manner that would instill lust. It's for fun. It's so you can dress up as a character and be silly with your friends at a convention and maybe take a couple pictures. It's so you can have fun creating a costume. Again, I repeat: the intent is not to deceive in a manner that would inspire lust.

It isn't anyone's job to make sure anyone you come into vague content with doesn't stumble. I'm not going to stop crossplaying on the off chance that I'm going to make some girl out there that I probably don't even know think lustful thoughts. I'm not going to stop listening to rock music just because some people don't believe in listening to secular music. I'm not going to stop wearing my Miles Edgeworth shirt just because it'll make some Phoenix Wright fans think about *GASP* yaoi. It's not a girl's job to stop wearing shirts that *gasp* aren't loosely fitted bags just because someone else's husband decides that he wants to drool over her chest.

It IS my job to say "hey I'm a girl" if asked. It's my job to turn off my music if asked politely. That's being honest and respectful. But after that it's out of my hands, just as it is in other situations. After that, it's all up to the other party. Because you know, they possess something called self control that they should learn to exercise once and a while. "I couldn't help it, she was making me sin" is a pretty poor excuse in most situations, IMO.

Coming from another perspective: you do realize that dressing as a female character, even in a fairly modest skirt and blazer, might attract just as much lust from men, don't you? I've never ever been harassed in a sexual manner while crossplaying. On the other hand, I've been cat-called at and harassed while cosplaying girls (it was the SOCKS that did it, no less), and trust me, it wasn't in the least bit fun. So using your logic: screwed if you do, screwed if you don't?

At the end of the day, I'm going to say that if you think crossplaying might mess with someone close to you, and you choose to not crossplay or look at crossplay pictures, then that's great for you. But I don't think that really calls for a public condemnation of the hobby as a whole.

So I was completely confused because I read it as Cosplay, not crossplaying...and then the whole start of your thing went on about how you were looking at pictures so you didn't have to go spend money actually going to one.
But um...yeah. XD

Well, you were probably thinking of this verse when you posted this:
1 Corinthians 10:31-32
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

For the most of that: What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? The yaoi thing: not cool(although i really don't know what you're talking about).

Don't worry about them, do what you can.

It is just my opinion. This is just a new thing that I've come to]is[/I] such a big issue that my opinion offends you that much, then perhaps it's something you need to look at more.

XDDDD I was just trying to introduce how I came to think about CROSSplaying lol...it really wasn't random, I promise.

[font="palatino Linotype"]I, personally, like crossplaying as guys than cosplaying as girls, because us girls (while crossplaying) generally don't have QUITE as revealing outfits, GENERALLY.

Yes, I am an avid crossplayer-wannabe.
But, think of the costumes.

FEMALE COSTUMES:
Revealing around the chest (generally)
Short skirt/some type of tight pants (generally)

MALE COSTUMES:
Looser, covered up shirts (generally)
Baggy pants and/or not-to-snug pants.

But, it's your own personal opinion.

So if I cosplay a girl and make a guy lust after me, it's A-OKAY, even if it subjects me to public objectification and degradation but I am clearly over the line if I crossplay and make a girl secretly lust after me, even if I'm not subjected to the same public degradation?

Protip #1: Sin is sin, it doesn't matter what gender is committing it.

Protip #2: Sexual harassment is a horrible, horrible thing, and I find it pretty offensive that you seem to simply brush such a situation off on the basis of being female, not on the basis of being a crossplayer or anything else.

Protip #3: It's possible for me to be offended by something and not need to reevaluate my spiritual life or my priorities.

Well then, in my opinion...the anime creators need to stop making girly men... it's confusing XD

in all seriousness, I've never let it bother me... I usually see a girl crossplaying and I don't think "ooh so hot!" I go up to that person and I am like, "Wow! That outfit looks like it took a long time to make! You really pulled the character off well!"

And let's be honest...most of the girls in anime are scantily clad or impossibly built...that's not fun... especially when guys EXPECT you to be the exact same way... I've seriously heard people tell a girl she needed "help" with her outfit because she was so small... if you know what I mean... (I believe she was cosplaying as Orihime...)

XD I think there's a lack of communication between us, mostly my fault for not elaborating. There are modest girls we can cosplay as; really, there are...your example had you up in a blazer, tall socks, not revealing at all(as I remember). Are you saying you have to dress like a guy in order for you to be modest? Maybe that says something about the anime we're watching.
I'm just saying that it's weird...and that I personally am uncomfortable with it. Right now, I'm trying to figure out the extent of the law we're supposed to be concerned about...and part of that law says not to dress as the other sex.
There are a lot of girly guys though, so I know many can be pulled off by our sex, but I just don't appreciate it.

i am on the basis of this statement:

"If you aren't willing to sell, don't advertize..." Meaning ifyou don't want guys/girls to bother you, just avoid the confrontation at all...

Watch what we wear guys and gals... although it's not a huge deal to us, it may cause others to stumble...

It's a touchy issue, and I'm not going to tell anyone "Don't Crossplay!" Because it doesn't bother me...really. I actually think it's fun...

I mean that's liek saying "girls shouldnt' wear ties"

Oh and did you know? In some Countries men wear dresses? Is that wrong?

It's not linear...in my opinion.

I am with you on the modesty scripture though, but I don't think it really applies to whether or not girls can dress up as anime guys...

but the whole not letting your neighbor's stumble...yeah I can see your point...

Girls cosplaying as guy=girls wearing pants/shorts(something a lot of girls do everyday, actually. Some of us don't like skirts that well.)
Guy cosplaying as girls=guys wearing dresses. I can't say this doesn't creep me out to an extent, but it's the person's choice to do it or not.

As far as girls crossplaying is concerned, perhaps girls like crossplaying as guys because they get to dress up as their fav anime character, without having to wear an immodest costume(like some female anime characters have)?

Also, I agree with everything Debitt has said in this thread.

I say if it bothers you so much, Oro, maybe you shouldn't go to anime cons? It's not going to stop you know...

Also, why go out in public at all? Lots of girls wear guy pants too! I have friends who wore them in high school for the chains...

I HATE dresses...with a passion...and I like to wear shirts that don't cling to me, because they are supposed to be for girls... O_o yeah...right...

I agree, this isn't as big an issue as you think..^^;
I don't cosplay, because I don't have the build for it... but I agree with What Debitt says, mostly.

My opinion is if it does bug you.. then you should try your best to stay away from it ^^ I guess that's kind of hard to do at a con, but it is possible :) Most people don't really think of it that way. They just dress up as their favorite characters.. male or female ^__^ I think it'll be cool to cosplay as Sephiroth ^^ I'd prolly buy the the outfit though. Since I can't sew or whatnot to save my life ^________^

Why does this feel like deja vu.. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHYYYYYYYYYYY D:<

I'm saying that unless you wrap yourself in a sack and cover your face (even then I'm not so sure...), there are probably people out there who will lust after you, so I find it slightly out of line to condemn a simple hobby or mode of normally reasonable dress (please take careful note of the word 'reasonable'), just because it might inspire someone to sin.
