Fatal Attack In Tokyo

Just hitting the news. A man drove a truck into a crowd of pedestrians jump out and began stubbing people. At this time 7 are dead and 11 injuried.
Police threaten the man with guns to surrender which he did.
It has been reported that he said he was a gangster and was tried of life and people.

To provide a bit more detailed info, this happened specifically in the Akihabara district of Tokyo.

Just goes to prove that banning guns won't stop violent crime. Also shows that stress is more than likely a major factor in actions like this...remember, Japan has a word that literally means "worked to death."

Still, it is sad. It also goes to show that Japan isn't completely immune to crime, despite the fact that the country is generally safer than others. Not completely safe, but safer than others.

I know that...which is why I said, "This proves that banning guns doesn't stop violent crime." o.O It was a remark on how it is extremely difficult to get guns in Japan, and yet this man still was able to murder people easily, showing that even when guns aren't obtainable people will still commit crimes.

Obviously a very disturbed young man who lacked the decency to take out his death wish by walking into the path of a shinkansen.

It will be interesting, over the next few days, as the pyschological profile of the perpetrator is released to the press.

The apparent increase in violent crime, coupled with the documented rise in suicide, makes me wonder just what is going on in the Japanese societal psyche at the moment. Expect it to be reflected in anime and manga after the next commercial break.

I read recently where people over there are using cleaning fluids to kill themselfs. They mix them then breath the fumes. It kills them but also causes a Haz Mat situation because the fumes will also vent through apartment buildings making other people sick.
My friend is a Captain in the EMS side of the Tokyo Fire Service and I have been waiting to see his E mails on any of this.

As for this Tokyo killing incident it's very sad but not surprising. They are a very reserved culture and all the negative attributes of humans are kept under wraps. That's not healthy for anyone. It only fuels the problem.

Gee, we might as well decide not to ban grenades. My home country is plagued with all sorts of crimes despite the ban on guns but I shudder to imagine what would happen if guns were legally allowed to the public.

Anyway, crimes like this are so rare in Japan that when it actually happens, everyone just eats it up. That's good, I hope this should remain rare there. I'm sincerely sorry about what happened.

AP reporting the attacker "had a penchant for computer games and anime" and "listed a female computer game character as his 'favorite person' in his junior high school yearbook". Also lists his occupation as "factory worker".

A hikikomori gone bad? Or perhaps yet another otaku on the skids. In any event, he telegraphed his intentions by posting messages on an Internet BB from his cell phone. Sounds like something out right out of Shonen Jump.

There is obviously a correlation between gun laws and rates of violence, but you also have to take into account of many things. Societal structures, amount of poverty, population of cities, political ratio, and societal classes can also be important factors when it comes to the rate of violence in a city or country.

What I'm saying is that you can't really make a statement like "Banning guns will decrease crime" or "Banning guns will increase crime" based on statistics alone. There are probably like... 10,000 other factors that you'd have to take into account.

Yes, it is. I never said "Banning guns decreases crime!" nor did I say "Making guns legal decreases crime!"

I said that it shows that banning guns will not stop violent crime. This is a verifiable statement. Guns are extremely difficult to come by in Japan. Violent crimes still occur. I'm not saying that the banning of guns causes violent crimes to occur.

Basically, Rai was saying "If you look at Vermont's gun laws and their crime rates, it's interesting." While he didn't say it, the implication was that having guns readily available does not make the crime rate go up. Maybe that's true, but there's other factors. For example, there might be another state or country in which guns are readily available and the crime is astronomical.

I'm not trying to make a cause/effect statement. I simply said, banning guns won't stop violent crime. This is the proof of that statement. It's also true in the UK where guns are difficult to come by, but the rate of stabbings is almost twice that of the US. All I'm saying is if you ban guns, people will find other ways to commit crimes, by knife, by vehicular homicide, etc.
