Cloverfield sequel not certain?

Sci Fi Channel wrote:J.J. Abrams, co-producer of the hit monster film Cloverfield, said that a sequel may or may not happen and revealed that he's more inclined to do something with his Cloverfield partners, writer Drew Goddard and director Matt Reeves, other than a follow-up.

"We're talking about it," Abrams said of Cloverfield 2 during an interview at the Fox upfront presentation for advertisers in New York on May 15, where he was promoting his upcoming SF TV series Fringe. "But the truth is there's another idea that I'd rather do with the same people than do a sequel. It's a whole new thing."

Abrams added, "So my dream is to work with [Goddard and Reeves] again, but do something that's [new]. Having said that, Drew and Matt both, separately, have really good ideas for what [Cloverfield 2] could be. So I don't know. We'll see. I know the studio wants it." --Ian Spelling

The way the movie ended gave them room to play with for a sequel. If they decide to do one, I'm not too worried about it utterly failing like most sequels tend to do.

I trust J.J. Abrams to be awesome regardless of what he does. XD That said, I'd prefer they didn't do a Cloverfield sequel and went with a new idea, but whichever they do, I'll be interested to see what comes of it. XD

I don't know if J.J. Abrams is just saying this right now, because he's working on a few movies and a tv show that will air on fox. He's already working on Star Trek movie, The Invisible Woman, Untitled Hunter Scott Project and the tv series called Fringe.

Oh, Abrams is working on more TV shows? I'll have to be sure to check them out if any of them are as good as Lost; I hope he carries over that level of quality. XD

From what I read, it maybe a show that I will watch. Fringe is described as a cross between The X-Files, Altered States and The Twilight Zone.

The series will premiere on August 26 and the pilot ep will be two hours long.

...And yet I still fail to care about Cloverfield. Never saw the first, would not see a second. No offense to fans of the series...I just did not get the whole hype behind it. >.<

I don't think there should be a sequel. The movie is supposed to end abruptly, I think.

Update:

Cloverfield sequel on hold

Sci Fi Channel wrote:Matt Reeves, who directed the monster thriller Cloverfield, told SCI FI Wire that plans for a sequel film have been put on hold until the filmmakers can come up with an idea as interesting as the original.

"The thing that we sort of promised ourselves is we only wanted to do another one if we could come up with something that felt as fresh to us to make as that one did," Reeves said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Universal City, Calif., on June 24, where he received the Filmmaker's Showcase Award.

Reeves added: "We're still kind of toying with what it's going to be and whether or not we're going to find something that will be as exciting for us to make and, hopefully, for an audience to watch. So we'll see. It's really in the baby, baby stages. And right now it's definitely on hold until we come up with what that would be."

Press reports have suggested that some of the ideas for the next film include a prequel that would go into the backstory of the creature that attacks New York in the original or a parallel story set on the same night with different characters. Reeves said that both of those ideas have been under discussion.

"We did talk about that, and I think that we would find some way, if we did it," he said. "Some of the ideas we've come up with reference this idea and reference the film, so that there is a sense that it's related to this film. But it would be different. I would need [it] to be really different."

Meanwhile, Reeves has been talking about other potential ideas with producer J.J. Abrams and writer Drew Goddard that aren't necessarily related to Cloverfield.

"We have a couple ideas," Reeves said. "We have a couple pretty exciting ideas, but it's in the very, very early stages of that. And whether or not that will develop into something that we want to do is really unclear at this point. But as long as J.J. and Drew and I come up with something that seems worth doing, then I think we'll do it." --Cindy White

I wasn't even aware that a Cloverfield sequel was on the way.

I really hope it's something even more dynamic than the first. The movie was so good that I don't see why it needs a sequel, but if they can pull it off, all the more power to them, I guess.

I think the best idea for the movie is to go with the camera thing again, but with someone important in the military. If they showed a different point of view that would rock.
But I'm fine with something new with the same writers so it's good every way. It's like winning something, but you don't know what it is, but it will be good no matter what :p

Why would an important person in the military be a camera man?
Shouldn't they be giving orders?

I think they should leave Cloverfield the way it is and pursue other projects.
