Your favourite big sword character

Postby Sammy Boy » Fri May 16, 2008 2:35 am

Hi there, I am not sure if this thread exists. I am curious as to who your favourite big sword character is?

It does not matter if the character is from manga, anime, comics, video games, or some other source.

"Big sword character" is pretty self-explanatory, but in case you are wondering, I am referring to characters that have a big sword as their primary weapon (e.g. Gutz from Berserk, Karula from Utawarerumono, Cloud Strife from FFVII, etc.).

I did not do a poll because there are probably many big sword characters that I don't know of.

My favourite is Gutz from Berserk. The reason is because his sword is really huge, and he is a bit of a tragic hero.

I think I'd have to go with Van from Gun Sword. That guy really knew his condiments.

Check the avatar. And that's all I have to say about that.

Well... maybe a second-place vote for Conan. The original novel one more than the movie one.

As a whole I don't like this character style, possibly because it generally tends to operate as if they had a much smaller sword, which just makes it flashy and pointless. But I would be interested in a character who fought intelligently with an oversized weapon, moving methodically and minimizing the number of strikes for efficiency. Most of the time you just get Advent Children.

That aside...
- Gutts somewhat does this, plus the series points out how ridiculous his sword is.
- Auron is a great character for reasons quite aside from his weapon.

My thoughts precisely. I would imagine that such a character would use an oversized sword as a shield as much as anything, using perhaps a dagger in the off-hand for counterstrikes, saving the main sword for heavy attacks (against armored foes, siege engines, etc.).

Rationalizing UC's post, Kagehisa Anotsu fits. No, it's a heavy ax, not a "Big sword," but the concept is the same.

That's actually young Zack. He has the whole "on that day five years ago" look later in the game.

Kikuchiyo (Samurai 7), because I think he's actually quite funny, and Ichigo (Bleach).

Interestingly

I like Kikuchiyo too. Off course, he also has a rather big sword in the original movie, though he seldom actually uses it.

I would imagine that you can define the size of "big" for yourself. I personally classified it as larger than real-world weapons like the claymore. Those can reasonably be wielded as a cleaving weapon. Cloud's Buster Sword... not so much.

Real big sword guys don't need two hands! Even using a claymore! Conan does one hand sword-spinning tricks with a freaking two-handed broadsword for pete sake!

Okay, I guess Zanpakuto are excluded from that rule... mostly.

I'd have to say Zanza from Rurouni Kenshin. ^^ Well, he might not count since his "big sword" got broken in the second issue with him... >.>
