Video Games That Would Make Great Movies

TV, Movies, Sports...you can find it all in here.

Postby crossalchemist » Thu May 10, 2007 12:10 am

All I can think of when I think of video games that SHOULD be made into movies is MYST.

I actually have come up with a storyline/pseudo-screenplay for a movie based on the first MYST game. The story line is substantially differen than the game in that the Ages actually have natives, there's a main character (replacing the player) who gets sucked into MYST while at an old library. He then becomes aware of Atrus' and Cathrine's plight and thinks that if he can help them he they can find a way for him to return home.

It involves a few of the puzzles, fights with natives, etc. and in the end it gets left open for a sequel (meaning he doesn't get to go back, Atrus' promises to "work on it" but, as he says at the end of MYST, "there are bigger problems on the rise" which might hinder the main character's return (aluding to Riven)). I think it's very doable if you can convince foaming-at-the-mouth fans to accept changes for the sake of being able to DO the movie. A friend of mine and I are going to make a mock trailer for my MYST movie idea this summer (hopefully). If we do I'll post a link to it somewhere.

Fish and Chips wrote:Have you ever read the Myst novels? For books "Based off a game," they're surprisingly well done and make for a good read. The first two cover the prehistory of the game's universe, and the third covers what happened after the fall of Riven and the rediscovery of the D'Ni.

The first book is a fine read, but relies on the reader already being familiar with the Myst chronology, games, and concepts, so it wouldn't be the best choice for making a film with mass appeal. And the third I haven't gotten to yet, but I've heard it's the weaker of the series. The second installment however, covering the fall of the D'Ni civilization, is excellent, and could easily make a plausible movie.

Yeah, I read The Book of Atrus (haven't read the others yet, but I will). I actually saw it all playing out like a movie as I read it. It was so dramatic and exciting! I suppose being written by the makers of the games helps a little, doesn't it? I would love it if someone was daring enough to make a movie of The Book of Atrus or anything Myst-related, but I have little faith in Hollywood directors. I have yet to see an adaptation (whether book-to-movie or game-to-movie) that doesn't leave me disappointed in some area, except maybe for Howl's Moving Castle.

However....

Now THIS is what I would love to see. A genuine fan of the story and the games making the movie, someone who wouldn't add things in for little reason, but would embellish the story just enough so it would work. Someone who respects the games enough to do them justice. :jump:

I suppose the chances of there ever being a Myst movie are about zilch, but if someone could make a movie that left this universe behind the way the Myst games do, the way Robyn Miller's movie will if he ever makes it, then I think I'd be content. In some ways, while everyone's obsessing over what existing stories would make good movies, I think if someone could make an original story in movie format that was the quality of those stories, it would be a greater achievement.

You know what? That WOULD have a much higher probability of success.

Having just finished a three game marathon of Metal Gear -- Metal Gear (MSX version), Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX version, NOT the American NES version) and Metal Gear Solid; as well as watching the Rambo trilogy and seeing a NUMBER of similarities... My money is dead on for a Metal Gear film... Let Hideo Kojima have the final say in the screenplay and casting and a live action flick would blow everything away... OMG, I am geeking out now!

Besides that, I think I want to see the Contra Movie made. *smirk*

Space Invaders

It'd be like Independance Day, but without Will Smith.

I'd love to see ICO and Shadow of the Colossus turned into some form of animated feature of course they'd have to add a lot more dialogue but they'd have awesome soundtracks!

As well as:

Koudelka
Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy VIII
Okami

....and I cannot think of anymore at this time. XD

Tetris vs. Pong. It's like Alien vs. Predator, only not, XDDD.

Tales of Symphonia would make an awesome series. I wish there was more than just the OVA. . .

There was a Tales of Symphonia OVA? I thought the only Tales of release was Tales of Phantasia by Geneon but if there is an actual OVA for that one I so need to buy that! ^__^

Those are two awesome games... it would be interesting to see what they would look like as movies.(depending on who is behind making it...)

I would be interested in Perfect Dark, Half-Life, Metroid or even Devil May Cry(live action...). I can't think of anything else at the moment.

Oh, I completely forgot Devil May Cry! Though it has an anime now right? I wonder if that is any good! ^__^ It'd be neat to see it turned into a Live-Action movie.

Yeah, I haven't had the chance to watch it either! I'd really like to see a live action version though. I should have got the special edition of Devil May Cry 4, as it had 4 episodes of the anime as an extra I think... grrr. Gamestop was out of them at the time... and I really wanted to play the game. >_<

Devil may Crys anime is pretty decent but very very violent. As for games i want to be made from movies is well.. none because of a sadistic mad man you ruins my respect for good movies and movies made from good movies. Hopefully you understand who i am talking about

After seeing IGN's April Fools day joke, I agree wholeheartedly that there needs to be a Legend of Zelda movie. How could that NOT be awesome!?

Also, second on Metroid, Half Life, blah blah blah...

And EARTHWORM JIM! :D

I don't think it's licensed. There are only four episodes anyway (wikipedia).

I just thought of a few more... forgot about PS3 games. Uncharted, Folklore and Heavenly Sword would all make for some interesting movies. I think so, anyway...

You should check the Used section at your local GameStop around here I've seen a few of the Limited Editions on the shelves. ^__^ Like you though, I missed the boat when it first came out. I'm waiting for it to drop more in the used section!

I second all three! I absolutely loved Folklore anyone who tells me they didn't like that game I always think, "What didn't you like?!" Heavenly Sword would be pretty cool as well as Uncharted.

I'd love to see Prince of Persia turned into a movie and judging by some speculation I believe it may already be in the works!

Edit: Looks like Prince of Persia is in fact being made into a movie which is based on the first game. YaY! Link, just scroll down in wiki to "Prince of Persia Film".
