Just wondering

Just wondering

I live in Hong Kong now. In Hong Kong they speak Cantonese, whereas the mainland speaks Putonghua (Mandarin). So since everyone here pretty much already speaks Cantonese they teach Mandarin instead. So I was just wondering if anyone else has had any lessons in Mandarin, and if so how long have they been learning.

*_* *HAND SHOOTS UP*

CHINESE SCHOOL, FOUR YEARS, AFTER WHICH I DEMANDED TO QUIT.

Kinda regret it now. I'm going to try to study Chinese on my own, which should be 1000X more efficient than Chinese school, but it would be nice if all the studying was behind me.

I studied Mandarin for awhile, but I haven't recently. I still remember a little bit.

I'm an English-educated Chinese and therefore, I've barely learnt any Chinese formally. I've been trying to pick up Mandarin on my own since 1998.

10 years later, I can read a good amount of Chinese characters [mixture of traditional and simplified] and I can manage some decent short conversations in Mandarin. I'm still forcing myself to practise speaking and listening - my church has been a safe haven for it with many friendly Chinese-speaking members and Chinese worship services.

Good luck, Chinese is one of the more difficult languages to pick up.

Ooh, this thread just reminded me to go search for a song tile by a Thaiwanese (sp) group called China Dolls. They sing both Chinese (I'm pretty sure Mandarin) and Thai.

"Wo Ai Ni.. Chun Ruk Ter.." It's a reayy pretty song, but I can't read Thai >_<

That first line is "I love you" I don't know the rest

I've only been studying for three months or so, but my teacher tells me that I'm progressing very quickly. I can recognise about 30 or 40 characters and reproduce abut 15 of those.

Hanyu! I'm in my third year now, and I spent 6 months in Beijing. Such a fun language. It's worth the effort.
