Absolutely outrageous.

Talk about anything in here.

My statement is what it is. My point was that every time some idiot rants ridiculously about some topic, people just latch onto it, without checking the facts for themselves. This can be VERY harmful. Imagine if people read that article and did what the guy said, started writing all sorts of letters to Congress and encouraged others to do the same. Congressmen would be literally flooded with letters on a bill that doesn't even exist! This would be very irritating and annoying, don't you think?

People who read the other articles shouldn't feel dumb. Rather, they should feel angry, angry and irritated that someone decided to lie about something like this.

What good do I think I'm doing? I don't know that I personally can do much good but what I'd LIKE to see is people taking the time to go, "Hmm, this sounds very fishy and weird, I should go do some research to see if what this guy is saying is true." And sometimes, it is true. In this case, it turned out to not be. There's not a lot of shame in falling for this. Heck, I admit fully that I've been a sheep who bought things at face value because of ranty articles.

So yeah. Take that as you will.

Okay, but there are much more considerate ways of making your point than being blatantly insulting. That's the point I'm trying to make.

Point noted. Actually what I was originally going to say was worse, but then I thought, "Y'know, I've fallen for this to, and besides, I don't want to be really rude and mean." XD;;

Next time remind me to read the actual legislation, not the furious newsletter.

This is only the second time I've been double crossed by the later. I'd rather not have an uneven three.

Well, I AM glad to know that the original article was blown out of proportion. XD Anyways, let's keep the remainder of this thread civil, guys.

I'd actually been waiting for a refutation of this... usually this things are highly overblown, or even false, and this one in particular struck me as pretty umm... iffy. I was actually tempted to check it on snopes, but decided to wait it out, since something this recent might not have been there. It may be that this reminded me of one of those spam e-mails that was about the bible or christianity or something else being banned in non-existent legislation.

That being said, I'm glad that this isn't coming across in any form as the original article implied.

I seriously believe that there would be a big enough "WTF" (what the fruitloop, of course) cry from the public that this would never happen, no matter what corporation tried to squeeze it through congress.

There's just too much at risk for our congressmen and congresswomen. They may be corrupt and bend to the way of money (that's their problem, not the government's IMHO), but it's pretty obvious that heads would roll over this and people wouldn't get re-elected if they supported it.

Edit: Oh, there were 4 pages to this thread... hmm... will have to read later.

I was actually pretty close to finding out who my Congressman is and giving him a ring to tell him my feelings on this. Glad I decided to read the rest of the thread. XD

XDDD

I really thought this was way too stupid to be even true... I was talking to a friend abuot it last night and I was like "Umm yeah, but these things can be blown out of proportion WAY easily."

I didn't realize it was talked about on here, though and so when I saw people freaking out about it, I was like "O_O is it REALLY true?

Talk about the Blind leading the blind XD no offense everyone. I will admit I fell for it slightly as well.

but seriously, how would this thing have worked the way there were saying it was.

XD I read this on Dai's DA pg, and was like "huh?"
If it was true, and anything of mine got stolen by a corporation, I would march to their HQ and unleash my rant. No one likes DEG rant.

The lesson here is not to hold back your emotions when you see something unjust. The initial reactions to the OP article were valid.

The lesson here is to beware of the kind of language used in the OP article. The guy writing that article was using inflammatory language designed specifically to get the response many of us gave it with out offering any real evidence of its claims.

Any time you see an article like that written, it should shoot off warning flares. While I was immediately concerned about what he was saying, I grew more and more suspicious of it. I wanted to know his motivation for writing it and I wanted actual evidence of what he was saying. As is usually the case, everything was blown out of proportion.

I'll finish the article in a few, specifically when get to a better computer. Still, as soon as I read the first page, I was irritated. I've noticed others talking about his sensationalist, emotionally-charged writing. I could read writing like his on a forum; I expect someone who writes for a magazine to be more mature.

On second thought, maybe I'll finish that woman's rebuttal instead of the original article. *still tickled over the ZOMG reference*

Right now to keep a piece copy righted one must mail a copy of the work to themselves and leave the work sealed. This provides proof of your work and a date

That's not so, actually. Here is the first example I could find:
http://www.publishingbasics.com/2003/07/19/clearing-up-the-confusion-about-copyright/
If you learn nothing else from this article, you must learn this: the mail-yourself-the-manuscript-and-then-you’ll-be-protected belief is a myth. It is simply not true and we do not want anyone who reads this article to perpetuate this myth for one more moment. Rest assured, the only thing you will prove when you mail your work to yourself is that the post office is still in the business of delivering mail.

The Mail Myth evolved in the days before the 1989 amendment to the Copyright Act. Under prior Copyright law, authors were required to include a copyright symbol on their work in order to create a copyright. Many rights were lost under the old law because of the strict copyright symbol requirement (as well as other formalities). Writers believed that the only way to prove the existence of that work on a particular date was to mail a copy to themselves. However, these days this is neither necessary nor helpful when it comes to actually registering your work.

<_<;; Ahem.

Like I said earlier, they couldn't do that. The article was, indeed, a falsehood, and the underlying statements thereof were an attempt to enrage and mislead the reader.

I'm glad I saw through it, as stated in my earlier post. ;;>_>
