Anyone ever had their wisdom teeth out?

I'm just curious about what it's like to have your wisdom teeth out. I'm only 15 but I already have to have them out. My surgery is scheduled for April 22nd so I still have a month or so, but I'm already really nervous. My parents aren't helping any either. They're just telling me all the BAD things about when they had theirs out. I'm just wondering what its like and if it's really completely bad...

I've had mine out.

It depends upon what kind of surgery you are getting. I chickened out in getting just the novacaine shots for the surgery, because the stupid dentist wanted to jab needles in all the sensitive areas of my mouth without using that numb-gel they use first! I went EEEEEEP! And demanded to get put-under for it.

Fortunately for me, I was a student at the time, and on my parents insurance. If I needed any major dental work done right now, I'd probably have to let it go and just suffer because I'm no longer a student and am a poor person on state insurance. Anyway, when I got my wisdom teeth out, I was on my parents' plan, and got the general anestetic whereby I was put to sleep.

It really wasn't so bad... The most annoying thing about it is that you cannot eat or drink all the night before the surgery. Not eating I could handle, but not drinking is what really drives you up a wall - you can only take teeny sips of water, which really don't slake your thirst.

After the surgery, I was really groggy. Have you ever taken a cat or dog home from the vet after you've had them spayed or neutered or some other surgery requiring that they have anestetic? You know how they stagger and wobble for a few hours when they try to walk? That was what I was like... mom and dad leading me to the car... I couldn't speak - just slur. It was really weird, but my mouth didn't hurt all that much.. I was just groggy. When I got home, I slept most of the day.

The dentist gave me painkillers to take for the next week and warned me not to drink anything through a straw (The sucking action opens up the wounds in the gums). So, it wasn't so bad... the painkillers are just like super-duper headache medicine, because, that's what you'll feel - headaches, rather than your mouth really hurting. I forgot my painkillers one day during the week when I was working (at a fast food place) - it was at point where Iw as told I was supposed to still be taking them, but I didn't think I needed them. - big mistake.. headache all night.. and I didn't have headache medicine with me and I couldn't go home...

But.. yeah, that's my experience. It's really not so bad except for the first day, if you get put-under you're going to be totally out of it, groggy and sleeping all day. And... take all your painkillers. Dont' skip days on those. With the painkillers, you dont' get headaches, but without them... some of the worst headaches you may ever have.

Hmm... My story may not be the best for you going into it. They discoverd the roots of my teeth were a little like fish hooks. They nocked me out so that they could dig around in there. It was not very fun. But within a week I was fine. And that was "complicated" sugery. So don't worry too much... You're bound to be fine within a few days!

And I got all the ice cream I could eat...

Hmm... I don't remember any headaches, though... At least not anything that bad.

I had mine out when I was 16. They had to get em out before my braces came off so that them coming in wouldnt ruin the stuff the braces did. All four were coming in sideways so they had to bust em up and takle em out in pieces. I was out and I healed up fast! Lotsa ice cream here too oldphilosopher! Lol Slept alot the first two days too. ^_^

I had mine out, and it was a very easy experience. They completely knocked me out, and yeah, I slept a whole lot, but I was never in any real pain. They gave me like 5 pills to take round the clock, though, but it kept me cozy and drowsy.

I will say this though, beware of bone splinters. They are shards of your jaw bone that are damaged when they remove your teeth and can break the surface of your gums. It's more irritating than it is painful--just don't "play" with it. Let the shard move out gradually on its own or it could get infected. I had 3 of those, but they weren't too terrible. Just scared me more than anything, but now I'm telling you so you don't have to be.

Oh and go rent a good movie for your down time. I saw Gladiator. ^^

My experience was definitely not typical. I slept through most of the day and was eating solid foods the day after. I was never in any real pain. It all has to do with how the surgery itself goes. My teeth popped out really easy.

O_O Mine doesn't bother me at all, so I'm probably keeping it. Most of my friends are keeping it in too.... (argh, dentist stories freak me out!! Whywhywhy did I come in here!? >_<)

Well, in my freshman year at high school, during the spring break week, I had my wisdom teeth removed. For me the pain and swelling went away in two days.... My main complaint was that it took me a while before I could return to solid foods... and I had to constantly squirt salt water in the gum areas where my wisdom teeth were removed. In a few weeks, my mouth felt completely normal, and life continued.

Do not worry about this, MillicentKnight. It is not a pleasant experience, but you will get over it rather quickly, and you will move on with your life.

i had mine out last monday

i was scared the night before, but when i woke up i wasnt, i took the calming pill they told me to take a half hour before the surgery, and that helped too, i went in, they put the iv in my arm, put a vitals moniter on my finger, and told me to breath from this thing they put on my nose, i was out within 20 seconds, i woke up in the resting area, and then i went home, i slept til like 4 that afternoon, then i was fine, i only had 2 wisdom teeth, and it didnt hurt that much, but it started to hurt on like wednesday and thursday, but now im perfectly normal, i can also eat most things, i think i had a experiance most people dont have, the main thing is not to worry

My best friend and her sister both got out there wisdom teeth. Here's what their orthodontist said. For some reason, blondes have a harder time than brunnettes do when they get their wisdom teeth out. That is either going to be extremely positive or extremely negative. I either say, I'm sorry or you're welcome.

I had mine taken out last year. Recovery was fine for the first couple days, but then I got a dry socket infection in my lower right. Now, I've got a pretty high pain threshold but I think I found my limit. MAN, it hurt. I hope for your sake your recovery goes without complication. My advice:
-Lots of sleep (aided by frequent doses of hydrocodone - that stuff knocks you right off your face)
-A pencil and paper to write with (don't even try to talk)
-Popsicles. Plenty of popsicles.
-Game Boy
-Keep a bowl nearby for the blood (don't spit forcefully - open your mouth and let it fall out).

I got mine pulled while I was out cold...no real complications except for the fact that another person from my french horn section had hers pulled on the same day effectivly eliminating 2/3 of our section for two weeks. We were both fine afterwards though.

Last I was at the dentist, I was told to get them removed. I hear it hurts like heck though, and the experience just sounds really nasty no matter how you guys put it... I don't think I can take the time off work, even, and I have to do alot of talking at my job. There's 3 people that work my department, and if I go out for that long, or for even one day, there's absolutely nobody who can fill my position because both of my coworkers are already full time and it's VERY much against company policy to give overtime. They simply won't do it no matter what the circumstance is. (Yeah, they're real money gropers.) I'm 19 years old, I don't think that my teeth are going anywhere anymore. No dentist has ever mentioned two words about my wisdom teeth before the last time I was in. So I am just taking it lightly... and hopefully nothing becomes of it.
