What do you think about genetically modified (GM) foods?

Postby GeneD » Fri Mar 14, 2008 12:32 pm

I’m wondering what the general opinion of GM foods are. Do you know if GM products have to be marked/labelled where you live and do you think it should be? Do you think it’s safe for human and animal consumption?

As far as I know, in my country GM foods must be labelled, but the only GM products widely available are Bt Cotton and Maize (Corn). The “Btâ€

They should be labeled or taken off store shelves...
Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Our stuff is labled here in my state. They feed the chickens like steroids along with tubs full of chemicals for them to drink . Can't really tell the difference unless you raise chickens. It's like a two month span from a chick to fully grown adult chicken around these huge commercial farms which is pretty funny. Ive raised some chickens and fed them naturally with corn and WATER. They took like almost a year to get huge.

They make it all sound scary, but I'm not convinced it's all unhealthy for human consumption.

Genetically modified plants are plants that have had their DNA altered giving them certain traits that they don't always have (such as resistance to certain diseases). Obviously there are some great benefits to this sort of technology, however there are some problems such as the possibility that a genetically altered vegetable contains a protein which a large portion of humanity is allergic too...yeah...that isn't good...of course that is a worse case scenario and as our understanding of DNA improves I would imagine that a situation like the one I just described will become less likely...though you never really know...

I'm unsure on this one. With plants, it's possible for genetically modified versions to pollinate natural (or even organic) plants that happen to be close enough. A technology with the potential for abuse is one thing, but a technology with the potential to force abuse on those taking pains to avoid it is something else entirely.

What makes me consider it at all is that lots of things we do technologically are like this. There's rarely an easy undo button and you're practically always taking someone else along for the ride. We just have to weigh whether the subversion of will and the potential for indelible disaster is greater here or in the alternatives such as increased food cost and pesticide use.

GM foods are a load of crap. They look great but they taste worse than crap. I want a tomato to taste like a freakin' tomato, not a piece of plastic!
And that's not including all the chemicals they pump into our foods.
It's ridiculous.

Considering that the company I work for focuses on an alternative means of trait delivery without using traditional genetic modification (typically the introduction of foreign DNA to produce chimaeric organisms such as the Bacillus thuringensis toxin GeneD mentioned), you would think that I would have a strong opinion on this.

In fact, I do not. Perhaps it's because I haven't looked, but I don't find any credible evidence that GM foods are bad. My boss said that our technology wasn't developed to combat "eeeevil GM foods" but rather take advantage of regulatory and governmental restrictions against them.

I am also full and quite satisfied.

I see no problem. XD

I ate them, and sprouted tentacles. Then I tried to use time travel and mess with the chain of causality to keep myself from eating them, and I grew more tentacles.

I just can't win. Also, I am now a mind flayer.

I dont have a problem with genetic modified plants. as far as i know, they arent killing people, so im game for some x-men veggies.

but the hormone pumped, chemical fed, full grown animals in a few weeks/days, i do not wish to eat, cant be good for you, and in my eyes i cruel to the animals themselves.
