Worst toy ever made

Talk about anything in here.

Mostly the fact that it was only sold for one year in the 50s...during the cold war...which makes me wonder if this toy was more about creating more nuclear physicists/engineers/people who'd make weapons for the government then fun and education

You have to think about the times. There really was a widespread fascination regarding nuclear power and a great deal of optimism about its use.

...I also don't know of any parent who'd give their kid anything with any radiation levels whatsoever...that just doesn't sound too safe.

When I was a kid under the watchful eyes of my parents I acquired a chunk of uranium ore, some cesium ore and got to tour all of Ontario's nuclear plants. I also was able to go on a special tour inside the reactor building at one of them. One of my younger brothers also had a very stripped down version of one of those science kits mentioned in the article (bought at a garage sale).

You might also want to think about this interesting demo I once saw. Basically a geiger counter was run over four different objects in order of the level of radioactivity: a chunk or uranium ore, the lantern bag of a Coleman lantern, a uranium fuel pellet, and an orange Fiestaware dinner plate.

However, the more that I think about it...the more that I want that comic book by Lesile Groves.

I agree. Incidentally, I also once acquired a children's book on the theory of relativity (written by two Russian physicists).
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

...hmmm...come to think of it the 50s, in America at least, were a time of optimism...however, I still think competition between the Russians had something to do with the development of this toy.

The port authority near my city routinely has to scan cargo containers by hand due to the "radiation signature" of the container.

Most of the time, it's things like ceramic tiles or granite countertops imported from overseas (like Italy, China, etc).

wow. I guess I don't mind furbies. Let's see. *ponders* I had one (dalmation) but then it broke...then we kept finding em at thrift stores. I think we have roughly 15-20 adults, 4-5 babies, a graduation furby still in box, and a shelbie(sp?). :) Some of the furbies don't work but they look cool on the shelf! If I want any I'd probably have to go back to my parents house and pick em up. Oh yeah! My mom and I went to toys r us and they had like a major sale on furby accessories. I think we bought roughly 10 backpacks (25 cents each) to carry the furbies in. Ya know, the ones that are seethrough so you can carry the furby with you.

As for worst toy ever...I dunno. I thinkany of the toys that I see being remade I don't care for (polly pocket, littlest pet shop, little people, etc. My little pony hasn't changed much so they're still ok in my book) probably due to nostalgia. I mean I remember how big polly pockets and little people used to be...o_o no..they're like huge! That's about all I can think of at the moment...

Well in this case, it was a bit more than that. Apparently, the company in Mexico that made those plates discovered that Uranium Oxide could make a very nice red-orange colour. Apparently, they also saw nothing wrong in selling dinner plates coated in the stuff.

O.O Woah...! Here's a tip: Don't microwave it for more than a few hours.

As for my little ponies, you've obviously never seen the "My Leper Pony" that was kicking around the 'net a while back. I can't really recommend the artist's site on this board, but the picture was kinda morbidly funny.

O_O; no...probably not. However that sounds like something my dad would think of. he thinks for barbies to be fare there needs to be "barbie needs a diet(like where she's fat and needs exercise and diet). Weelchair bound barbie (paralyzed, cast), cancer recovery barbie(..basically no hair... I guess), etc, etc"

Known as Fiestaware, these brightly colored orange, red and yellow plates and crockery items were all the rage in the 1950s and 1960s (I think). They can fetch quite a high price at antique and yard sales, as they are very collectable. We used to keep some around work (I work at a nuclear facility) to show to members of the public that everyday items can have a radioactive signature, not just stuff from our plant. Those plates would peg our portable contamination detectors.

In general, these plates are glazed and fired, which should do a good job keeping the uranium bound to the plate (and out of the food). Break it or scratch it, and that's another story...

Pogs are more of from my brothers time, but I do remember sneaking into his room and messing with them! I quite liked them but hey, I was only like 5 or something.

Ball-in-a-cup!

Announcer: "Hey kids of america, its hand painted wooden ball-in-a-cup, Mexico's favorite toy for over 340 years. Who needs constant video game stimulation when theres ball-in-a-cup? You just toss the ball, catch it in the cup, dump it out of the cup, toss it, and catch it in the cup again. The ball is on a string and attached to the cup, so theres no worry if you dont catch the ball in the cup. And clean up is as easy as catching a ball in a cup. So why spend another day not catching a ball in a cup when you can be catching a ball-in-a-cup?"

Stewie: (while playing with his ball-in-a-cup) Aw, I missed the cup. Hey but its okay because there's a string attached to the cup!

Last I remember, you stacked the cheap ones up and hit them with one of the heavy ones (I never had one of the cool metal ones, just a couple from plastic) and then add up how many are picture-up. That's your score. Someone does it with a similar-size stack, and you compare scores. I think.

Yeah, but when I was little, we had REAL paddle balls. Real rubber ball and rubber band and Real immanent-deforestation hardwood paddle. They were tough, and awesome. You could hurt someone with one of those things. Not like these cardboard imitations like you get today...

And speaking of hurting someone: The sonic blaster. A bazooka sized compressed air cannon that you pumped up. Ear-splitting loud. You could feel the air blast across a room. You weren't supposed to put anything in it, of course, but in those days, it's not like there was something preventing you. A ball of paper could draw blood out of this thing, I'm telling you.

Ah, yes...I had a big stack of Pogs and a "slammer" at one point. They were so stupid but I loved them anyway. I didn't even have anyone to play the game with.

Ugh, paddle balls! I hate those things! I had one when I was little that was made of splintery, cheap wood and had the rubber band part stapled to the paddle. I remember being afraid to play with it.
