Talk about anything in here.

Unfortunately, no school security system is perfect. I'm sure there's always a way to bypass it.

Two days after the tragedy, and how many people who weren't directly affected by this are losing sleep over it? I know this is a broken world, but things like this just shouldn't happen.

I respected your input in the topic. Someone made an error and you respectfully corrected the person instead of openly expressing your disbelief in a condescending manner. I think you should get props for that.

If someone was intent on hurting people at a specific school, you could not secure it if you didn't know it was coming.

In this case, this is a college. It could have hundreds of buildings, and be the size of a small city, with 20,000 or more people (the school I attend is 20,000 students PLUS faculty AND auxiliary staff) and most buildings have multiple entrances. For full security you'd have to hire a small army of security guards numbering in the hundreds just to secure buildings, as well as securing ALL the grounds in case someone decided to just start shooting in a crowded outdoor area or worse, using a long range rifle. This is just not a feasible argument.

I've heard people try to compare schools to airports, and... I just don't see it. Most airports are single buildings, with limited entrances. Its more like securing a town or a 10 block square set of office buildings, houses and recreational areas.

Exactly.

*Sighs* It just makes you wonder if you're next...and people wonder why I'm so high-strung sometimes.

And that's the thing: people tend to blame it on video games. Granted, there are certain games out there that NO ONE should play, but I think the cause of this is several factors, namely the media, lack of parental attention and guidance, bullying by peers, loneliness, lack of any solid religious structure (that doesn't involve killing, mind you...), etc. Any combination of these could set someone off; we just have to pray that the person gets help before the trap goes off and someone gets hurt, or possibly killed.

I'd just like to remind everyone that this thread is about a school shooting and the victims' families, not about Jack Thompson and video games.

That's all. Carry on.

I also heard about that earlier this week too. That is sad :(.

I've also noticed that schools seem to be a popular and notorious locations for shootings. I also remember the other school shooting that happened last year.

I think we all find the question of what exactly the root cause of these sporadic school massacres and what we can do to prevent them burns inside of us. Many of the most common factors people point to include a decline in the belief that human life has an inherant dignity and significance (i.e. the combined historical legacy of the Christian and Humanistic traditions from the time of the Renaissance onward), the ready availability of arms, dysfunctional social relationships and the breakdown of the family unit, inadaquete security measures, the ubiquity of violent entertainment, and the increasing sense of alienation of American youth. While each of these may play a significant role in these tragedies, I think their most significant root cause lies in our own Capitalistic Socio-Economic structure. I think our economic structure has had the byproduct of turning our society into a pressure cooker of stressors that makes these kinds of sporadic incidents where individuals reach critical mass and explode violently inevitable.

It's sad...but with the rate that these shootings seem to be going...I find myself not really caring anymore. too much death overload for me I guess....

Reagan loves you anyway. Thanks for ignoring RadicalDreamers request that the thread not turn into debate. I would suggest that everyone pray for the families of those affected by this. As was already said better here...
