Driving Ms. Cell Phone

Postby KhakiBlueSocks » Fri Feb 08, 2008 7:39 pm

This is just something I was thinking about on the drive up to work. How many members of the driving public of CAA--

How many of you (BE HONEST...) use your cell phone while driving?

What's a cell phone?

Yes, I am in fact part of the 2% of the population who doesn't own and rarely uses one. The question does not account for me.

I voted "no", although I do from time to time. I usually avoid it, however, meaning that I almost never initiate a call while driving unless it's important.

Well it's illegal and dangerous because driving already requires absolute attention. No, I don't.

I do use it while I'm driving if I have to, but I try not to. If I get a call when I'm driving, though, I'll pick up the phone, but I don't stay on long. xD

If its gonna be a long call, I pull over and talk. If its something quick and short, I will drive and talk.

Goofy answer: Cell phones are the devil. :P

Serious answer: I neither own a cell phone nor have I ever used one. I voted no 'cause I can. ^_^

I neither drive nor use a cell phone! It's not that I can't (I have a license and a phone...), it's that both are evil. It's the third millenium already; we should be able to teleport and communicate telepathically, sheesh... (In the meantime, public transportation and e-mail shall suffice.)

I have neither a phone or a car, but I won't drive and talk for the most part. I hate talking on the phone anyways D:

Well, I'm on the road for about 200 hours a year (yeah - you read that right). Given that I have a bluetooth handsfree device, I'm not really all that opposed to chatting away the drive. I try not to have extremely serious conversations, though - as I don't want to be all THAT distracted. But I do take the opportunity to get caught up with clients and/or voicemail - if I really need too.

I don't drive, so the answer would have to be no. xD Although personally I'd take short calls while driving, and pull over if it was going to take a while.

I haven't really started using a cellphone that much, so no. I do drive just not that often. I do think it is dangerous to use a cellphone while driving so I never hope that I'll have to use one while driving.

@ ChurchPunk- You seem to be contradicting yourself. Or you were just kidding with that first statement. Sorry it just looks odd. Or you meant while someone else did the driving.

It HAS been illegal here for quite some time ~_~

That said, I've spoken on the phone illegally but I generally do not do it. If I'm driving a manual, doing so is completely out of the question. I don't have three arms.

"personally I'd" Contraction of I would. Meaning that if I did drive, I would probably take short calls, and stop for long ones.. ;) Sorry for the confusion.

The only time I recall doing stuff with my cell phone was quickly turning it on while waiting for a light to change to green. Other than that, if my phone rings while I'm driving (which is extremely rare since I only really call my family during the day and 1 or 2 friends when I want to meet up with them) I let it ring. 'Sides, I've got a catchy ringtone. :D

I don't drive, so it's an automatic no for me. But even if I did, I still wouldn't use my cell. It's too distracting/dangerous. Besides, I only use my cell for emergencies anyway.

My phone has only gone off twice while I was driving and I just let it ring (I think one was a text and the other was a voicemail). I find it better to wait until I stop somewhere before I respond.

Hmm... Maybe we should read that law a little closer. As I understand it, it will be illegal for teens to use ANY electronic device (gameboy, ipod, laptop, cell phone, etc) while drying.

As far as I know, the rest of us can use a hands-free phone, unless we are in certain jurisdictions (I guess Ingemar is?) - though I'm not positive about the validity of such a law, given official California law.

No duh. If you're wet, touching electronic stuff could electrocute you! And kill you! =P

I don't drive yet, so I abstain from voting. :P

Yes I do as long as I also have my hands-free set.

It depends on the location though. On an desolated freeway, sure. If it's the Dan Ryan Expressway during peak time on a Friday evening, you've gotta be nuts.

Seriously though I don't drive and I don't own a cell phone.I do agree with the ban in California because a lot of times it seems that people who do drive while on the cell phone don't pay attention to what they're doing or where they're going.Quite frankly I think the use of cell phones while driving, except in the cases of emergencies should be nationwide because of the great risks the cell phone users put themselves or others.
If you have to call someone when you're driving use commonsense and pull over first.

Many people will find any reason to become distracted while driving. Cell Phones are neither better nor worse. Problem is, people don't like to think about their situation, they'd rather just act and they are not used to mixing two familiar activities. They have a natural habit for driving which is a different from their natural habits while talking on the phone. The trick to successfully talking on the phone while driving is remembering which of those two activities deserves the bulk of your attention.

I can't even navigate and drive at the same time (this frightens some people... :eyeroll: Do they not realize most vehicles have a helmsman and a navigator? ;) ).
If my darn phone goes off, I just ignore it.
