Concerning reptiles and the Bible...

Talk about anything in here.

If dragons are evil, then I'm in big trouble. I'd hate to think I shouldn't read books like Eragon.

No one should read Eragon, not because it has dragons, but because it's terrible.

That's very true, Eragon is a travesty of fantasy.

Revelation is supposed to be symbolic (obviously), and strange creatures are used to symbolize churches, kingdoms, nations, etc. It's not just reptiles that are used in prophecy - there are lions, leopards, birds, lambs, bears, even freaky-looking monsters that don't actually exist. So... hating snakes and reptiles on that accord is pretty silly, since they are hardly the only animals that symbolize evil in the Bible. Using strong, dangerous, fearsome creatures to convey such ideas make sense. I mean, can you imagine the antichrist being represented by a cute little kitten? XD

Anyway, I don't think it's very Christian to hate God's creation and cause it needless suffering. If an animal is dangerous, we should respectfully keep our distance, but we shouldn't consider it "evil". Animals are suffering the effects of a cursed world because of our sin, remember.
Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

I once dared my flatmate to rent the movie...Unfortunately, he did.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

For the people who say that reptiles are evil ask them why God decided to turn Aaron's rod into one for pharaoh *it was aaron right?* and why the people needed to look upon a snake on a raised rod to cure them of the snake venom? *if I am innacurate please let me know. I havn't read those stories in years*

Hey, I liked that book. Granted, it was cliched, and one knows the end (partially) from the beginning. And in Paolini's defense, he had nothing to do with the movie. I wonder if Eldest is better.

I've long liked dragons. Yes, the name can be traced back to "snake"; in fact, in the Bible, a dragon is a 'glorified' snake (check the concordance). Anyway, I think they're fascinating creatures. And I don't remember the Bible ever condemning reptiles.
"You've gotta speak about those things you don't currently see as though they already exist. Back in the beginning, God didn't look into space and say, 'Gee, it's dark.' He called light into existence."

Gotta Getta Gundam. ;)

The dragon is not a glorified snake, it's more likely a dinosaur.
And the Garden of Eden contained an evil 'serpent', which is often mistaken for snake. It's more likely akin to a large lizard (but we don't know for sure).

It had the quality of a Uwe Boll film but he didn't direct it. Sure seemed like it though (but unlike his other movies, the source material wouldn't have helped one iota).

The Uwe Boll films that I've seen at least had better dialogue. Also Silent Hill was kind of cool since it was partly shot in my town (a couple of local landmarks figure prominently).

I am sorry Techno, but defending Uwe Boll is a ban-worthy offense. Keep that in mind. >.<

Oh, I'm not defending him; his movies stink. I'm just saying that whoever made Eragon is worse.

YES.

Although my friends and I had a lot of fun MST3k-ing the Eragon movie. That's the only entertainment value it has. :]

If you go to Rifftrax they have one for Eragon. I'm almost considering buying the DVD just for the Rifftrax of it.

While I don't know that I would go quite THAT far, it certainly sounds like it would be a great deal of fun.

I just noticed this thread and have a tiny bit to say.

Is Jesus actually a dumb little idiotic animal? He is called the Lamb of God, and we all know how stupid sheep are.

Simply put, no. It's symbolism. Jesus was called the Lamb of God because he was the sacrifice, and lambs were usually sacrificed during those times.

As for Satan being called the Red Dragon, look back in history and try to find a creature that is more feared and more dangerous than a dragon. It's symbolism. You're not going to call Satan the Pink Poodle, for goodness sake.

Does that mean lambs are holy because Jesus is called one? Absolutely not. I don't see any glowing sheep anywhere.

Same for dragons. They're not evil satans, they're creatures.

* Also, I personally find the excuse of "God made them" to be illogical. God made Satan and demons as well and although yes, they were perfect when they were first created, they are evil in the end.
