Now all we need are the angst-ridden, teenage pilots.

That's interesting, and a bucket load of money...XD

That is uber cool... Lets see how many could Bill Gates purchase... and he'd get a discount on the IBM computers too!

It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon for 12 seconds.

Meanwhile, angsty teenage pilots are a dime a dozen. Gotta cut military expenditures somewhere.

I bet it ain't more expensive than University of Miami's tuition for all 4 years *ehem*

If gundams did exist, I'd become a pilot, but then again, I tend to break expensive stuff. *imagines extensive damage on the first try*

Oh its much much higher, trust me.

That much is almost chump change to the US.

F-22 Raptor: 125 million dollars a pop

B-2 Spirit (Stealth Bomber): 2.2 Billion a Pop

F-16 Falcon: 16 million

The cheapest plane in the US arsenal I know of? A-10 Thunderbolt II, the Warthog coming in at 1.5 million. Yeah you heard me, 1.5 million is a 'cheap' fighter.

I thought the F-22 cost was cut down to $92 million

The F-16 C/D's are now $26.9 million

A-10 is $13 million, but its still the cheaper plane that they have.

The B-1 is $200-plus million

As for the report, $79 billion, 521 million yen (about US $729,700,000) is not too bad in US money, since Yen is worth more then US dollars.

The CVN-76 Ronald Reagan Nimitz-class aircraft carrier was estimated at $4.3 billion and this Gundam would be $800,000 million to buy the parts in US dollars.

Also, in the report, they sure didn't check the FAS web site about the true cost of planes and ships.

In the report, they said this wrote:US$800 million for an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (operated by the U.S. and Japanese navies)

The true cost for an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is $20 million for one ship.

O_O That's cool...!

If only they could make them fly, and be a little lighter... That whole thing about them sinking? Sad, sad stuff. Are you sure they couldn't do something to fix that? :eyebrow:

Ex freak'n dee, Fish. Where is this awesomeness from? XD

Anywho, I think it'd be silly if they ever built such a thing that huge. Fighting on the ground in that thing would be like Godzilla taking a walk through Tokyo. Mass destruction everywhere.

The skies are my type of battlefield anyway.

You know as much as I said the had the money to build one, I really never want to see a real Gundam, ever.

It would be too much of a problem and if it fell down, it could wipe out a good area.

I feel that if we ever see a robot like in anime series, it would be build for saving lives and not built for war.

Japan has work on something of an unit that they have started calling Patlabor, like the name from the anime series Patlabor. The unit is used for rescuing cars from a cliff or an area that it wouldn't be safe to bring in rescue people to get a person out of a car.

That's not as expensive as I thought it would be. I would have placed it in the 1.5-2.5 billion range.

But then, they calculated the cost based on aluminum armor. Since it walks and doesn't fly, me thinks aluminum skin would not stand up well in a real battle situation.

Mass compensation device. All we need to do is invent a device that can compensate for the Gundam's mass.

Actually I think that was just the price of the Gundam sans weaponry.
Plus you have the add the cost of simply adding the engines to make it fly and space worthy.
I think all in all it be over the actual estimate to get a working Gundam that flies and fights and can go into space.

Now where are all the pretty pink haired pacifist girl singers and all the pretty red headed girls?

The one thing that is not in the report is the entire cost of the research and construction project.

All the prices for the airplanes and ship that have been posted, are calculated of the entire cost of the research and construction project.

So, pricey yes, as for the parts not that bad. But the full cost of everything would be higher then this.

So far in the history of war, offensive power has outstripped defensive power considerably. Any real weapon of the future would be small, because the chance of surviving any given attack will decrease unless there is a significant shift in technological trends (like something that would make the idea of an energy shield a reality). Having a bipedal form makes even less sense, but that's already been addressed by the 20th Century Boys excerpt.

But we all know mecha make no sense, they're just to have anthropomorphic battle vehicles. At least I hope we all know.

I am well aware humanoid war machines are well beyond the practical. The task of protecting the joints is a nightmare on its own, never mind the massive computers that would be needed to calculate balance and decided where best to put the feet, and then there is the matter of controlling the beast. Add weapons to the mix and you would need a super-computer just to make it pilotable, let alone a true threat.

But isn't that the point? That they could never exist? Its part of the allure.
