my mom defended anime 0_o

Talk about anything in here.

Postby Heart of Sword » Wed Dec 29, 2004 7:17 am

My grandma and aunt give me problems sometimes. My mom and dad like anime (my mom loves Kenshin and dad thinks it's cool). But I was watching Wolf's Rain (the last episode), and my aunt didn't think it was all that bad. XD

I get mad when they say, "You're too old for cartoons." Sheesh. It's not a cartoon... :shady: And anyway, what would they want me to watch?? Because besides "cartoons" (grrrrrr), a lot of the stuff out there is total garbage...

Ah well. Some people can just be judgmental...judgemental...judgmental...which is it??? Oro...

I got into anime when I was younger by watching Rurouni Kenshin on CN. I taped it anytime I couldn't watch it, but I was younger so there really wasn't any questioning of whether I was "too old for cartoons". Now they don't really monitor what I get, except for the occasional "You just skip over the bad words like in a book, right?" and "Remember, Jesus insert biblical truth here " I do wish I could get them to see some of it though. Sometimes my dad comes in my room when I'm watching anime with subtitles and starts talking in a fake Japanese language. Its kinda annoying -_-;; I want to get Grave of the Fireflies sometime cause I haven't seen it and maybe I can watch that with them. I've heard its really good.

You are very lucky Hitokiri....*sigh* me wishes me parents (especially my mom) were more into it....yes...oh well....at least they don't go over the top saying it's trash or anything and whenever I explain some part of some anime they'll actually agree with certain things in it about how it has some Biblical aspects.....but...they still.....*sigh*.....oh well.....^^

One would assume. ;) But don't knock the older stuff - some of it is great.

Interesting, my dad has really taken a liking to the Someday's Dreamers score. That's the only time I can really think of where he has liked something related to anime. Granted it's just because he likes the sound of the music, but it was a shock to me.

My mother just laughs at anime. She thinks it looks weird and the animation is cheap, but at least she isn't the "I shall sheild your eyes from the devil's heathen porno cartoons your poor misguided child!!!1@#&1!!" kind of mom. Naturally, she hasn't seen nearly enough to make a proper judgement on the quality of anime, but when my brother asked for a bunch of Miyazaki movies for his birthday she thought they were rather 'cute'.
Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

I'm having such a time of things convincing my mom that not all anime is porn, that by watching anime I am not supporting porn, and that conventions are not the spawn of the devil. Pray for me, guys, I really, really want to get to JACON...

At first my parents didn't really care... then one of my mom's friend got all "you shouldn't let your daughter be into that stuff" on her, and my mom had a talk with me but now at least we are on the same page about everything and my parents have accepted it without a problem. Now whenever a relative or friend questions my anime/manga hobby, my parents simply state that they trust and respect my choices. They know I'm not into the "bad" stuff and even admire the interest I have in the art style. My dad recently bought me a book about anime (one of the How To Draw Manga ones, on making anime). He said he didn't know if I wanted that one but figured I'd enjoy looking through it anyway, which made me realize how cool my parents are to trust me and even support my interests. Go parents! Yay for your mom too, Hitokiri!

My mom has seen all of Trigun and most of Wolf's Rain, meaning she only missed a couple episodes, and only because I accidently didn't tape them for one reason or another. My only complaint is that she could care less about character deaths. >< She's also seen portions of Azumanga Daioh, Lupin III (the series that ran on Adult Swim), Detective Conan, Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop; ect. It's cool.
Think happy thoughts.

well, my mom is ok with me watching the old school american cartoons, and even the ones that i used to watch when i was young like thundercats, voltron, etc, but she doesn't like me watching the ones they show on cn on adult swim due to the language mostly, and she doesn't even like most of the new cartoons in general 'cus the animation is poor and the comedic value is even worse, as far as the new cartoons gripe, i agree, but most of the anime that is shown on adult swim in my opinion has a plot that if the means were possible could easily be a live action show, for example Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is really just a scifi cop show, on par with law and order and nypd blue, actually cleaner than nypd blue in my opinion, but i digress, my father does watch anime, and has watched it since before i was born (22 years ago), kinda ironic though 'cus i don't see him that much, but i'm into anime too, i wasn't even trying to be like him, i found out that he watched it after the fact

That's what happened with my parents. It didn't take long for them to come around, and even at the beginning they pretty much trusted me. A parent's approval is very important, and that's a huge reason why we try to work with parents here. The staff encourages parents to contact us with concerns and questions about anime and the site in general.

Well, my mom was into anime when she was young, but she didn't understand that I still liked it as a teen. I think it was also because my grandpa was strongly against anime and so it rubbed off my mom. She also used to look at my anime drawing with disdain, but I knew she drew it too when she was little. I didn't want to argue though.

Now...it's kind of weird, in a good way. I accidently left some of my drawings out on a counter, and my mom got a hold of them. The last time I found them, they were in a drawer; she had colored them. Actually, she also cut one of them out; I didn't find that out until I found the cut out scraps. XD She also bought me a manga book for X-mas. I <3 my mom. ^^

My dad has always let me watch whatever I want. The real problem comes when he wants me to explain to him what's going on. Hence a 20-minute discussion on why Japanese anime artists draw big eyes when Japanese people don't have big eyes. *headache*

I didn't get into anime myself until I was around 40.So sometimes
it does take awhile. :thumb:
Actually I think the only time when I was in my 20s that I might have heard
anyone talk about anime or manga would have been at Bible School and that in a negative manner.
Really I didn't know what anime was until we moved to town and what was
then Tech Tv started to air Silent Mobius on Anime Unleashed, that was my
first REAL exposure to anime. :thumb:
Ok,I did see bits of Digimon when it was on FOX but I didn't know it was
anime back then so Silent Mobius was the first anime I KNEW was anime.

Well in my house, I'm the father and what I say goes. And I say, "Kids, the new issue of NewType is here!" "Yay!" "But you can't see it until I'm done with it" "Waaa!"

Actually, my older daughter keeps me in line when the inevitable trailer for Full Metal Fan Service, or whatever, comes on. "Dad...DAD! You are so not getting that one!"

Seriously, sounds like you've got a great, supportive mother. Or, maybe she just wanted Grandma out of the house.

I had to giggle after reading this post.

I wish my mom and dad were more into Anime and trusted me more. I am very mature for my age, I know how to listen to God, I know what is good and evil so I wish they would trust me more. More over they just hate Anime. My mom is more able to bend then my dad, because sometimes she'll watch Inuyasha with me and is obviously interested and asks questions like, "Okay so who's this guy?" And I am thankful she tries a little bit to get into it. My dad, however, oi. He cannot stand Anime and I fear to watch it with him because he always has some comment to make like, "Wow that guy has a sharp nose he could poke someone's eyes out" or "This is really weird." Or he makes fun of the name (usually it's Japanese) I think he does it to be funny and kid around with me, but to tell the truth I get really sick of all the commentary and I wish he would show at least a morsal of interest like my mom. And he wants me to get into those grueling old westerns that you can always predict the ending before it's half way finished. Oi. But that's really cool of your mom Hitokiri! ^_~*
That must have been really awesome to hear her say that!

I suppose I have not only a cool mom.. but also a really cool family. I really have no complaints with my parents or my relatives. I think I've been blessed with the best family in the world. Sure my Sister and I would fight when we were kids, but I get along with my other two younger siblings just fine, and ever since she moved out she's matured a great deal, and we get along quite well now.

I remember once when another friend of about 19 at the time, was telling me that her parents were grounding her because, although she got home by her curfew {which was something like 9:30}, She didn't come inside because her and her boyfriend {really good friend of mine} were talking in the driveway. She came in technically late, and got a weeks worth of shores, banned from dating for a week, and loads of other stuff.. I was listening to her complaints, which seemed outlandish to me, as my cell phone rang. I picked it up and it was my mom.

mom: "Hello?"
me: "hey, what's up"
mom: "oh, good, you're alive."
me: "oh right, hehe, I haven't been home in.. er.."
mom: "about 3 days"
me: "ha, yeah, sorry, I should have called. I'm coming home tonight"
mom: "ah, so I'll expect you for supper then?"
me: "yup"
mom: "oh good. ok. Bye"

I hung up the phone and went back to try to listen to her.. but my friend overheard the conversation, and had fire-y eyes and looked like she wanted to strangle me.

So like I said... I've been really blessed with a really great family. Really understanding. My mom has gone back and forth with Anime, as she does with most things, but nobody was ever against it as though it was anything more than a form of entertainment.

Nobody has ever even thought for a second that it was a problem though... I'm convinced maybe it's just because we in Canada are cooler, because a lot of the attitude I keep hearing like this seems to come from the fans in the states. Oh well, some people are simply closed minded, rather than philosophical.

You know what I suggest, is perhaps ask them what they think is wrong about it. Ask your Grandma what her problem with it is, and see if you can't share with her what you know about Anime.. unless you aren't philosophical either... If you don't know how to think through all the reasons Anime is good and bad, then best not, maybe.. But still, I highly recommend at least sharing where you're coming from.
