Skip class for retreat?

Postby Jaltus-bot » Sat Jan 05, 2008 9:51 pm

I am signed up for a retreat with my school Bible study. I just found out that the leaving time is from the leader's local church just before my class will start. There might be a later car leaving, but they really don't want to do that. What are your thoughts on talking to the professor about missing class that day?

Personal background info on the class situation: I got my first ever 4.0 last quarter, but that was because of extra credit and a boost for the whole class in one of my classes. While this particular conflicting class is not in my major department, it is a very useful and practical class. This is the same department as what was last quarter my worst class. I already emailed the professor several weeks ago about getting a copy of the syllabus for some pre-reading, so I don't think he will just think I don't care about the class. All of my fees and tuition are currently paid for by tax-payers through financial aid.
When I feel blue, I start breathing again.

I think it should be ok. Just make sure you don't make a habit out of missing class. Most universities allow you 3 or so absences before they start counting against you (to allow for going out of town or getting sick).
Be sure to get the notes you miss from someone.
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Wow.. I suppose I'm used to the universities that aren't babysitters. Notes shouldn't even be a problem. My Dad's a teacher, and got through a few of his classes showing up only once or twice a month to do the tests.

Do the Material. I think if you decide to go on the retreat, you shouldn't make people go out of their way for you. Either go to class, or skip it.

Yeah, most university courses don't keep track of your attendance unless they're incredibly small and the professor knows you very well. They expect you to take responsibility for your own grades.

As long as you catch up and stay on track, you should be fine. I know some ppl skip classes and still score good grades but I typically attend as many classes as possible. The only exception I make is when the class is SUPER boring and the lecturer is merely reading from the textbook (but I've only done that for one course in my whole academic life).

Have a great time at your retreat~

Profs don't care if you skip class. They probably won't notice. The only time you're really boned is if you skip class during a midterm.

(I've had classmates who don't ever attend class and only show up for midterms and finals but... I seriously do not recommend that).

I'm also heading for a Church retreat this weekend. Fancy that, now.

As long as you have already told the professor about your absence and he doesn't have a problem with it.

i go to a small college where they sorta care about attendance...but only if you miss more than 6 days a semester.. They don't REALLY care if you are there or not...(XD it's not their grade).

I usually let my teachers know in advance when I will or will not be there. If I am sick and I know that before class starts I email them quickly.

You should be okay with only missing one or two days... but don't make a habit out of it.

yeah...when I went to community college. In a couple of my classes at the beginning of them the teachers would pass around a piece of paper and if you didn't put your name down on that paper (or were not there to do so) you'd get in trouble and they would like quiz you next time they saw you to see if you knew the material...=_= I hated those courses. . .Luckily all my retreat stuff was during school breaks. But I agree with what others have said, if the professor knows it should be fine for you to go.

If its not the first day (you could be dropped from the class, per school policy), and you cover your bases, and don't miss too many other days, it should be fine.

Umm... I don't know where you are talking about, but here where I am, The first day is the least troublesome. They forgive not showing up almost immediately, and course changes always happen. They keep your name on the list for at least a week. The teacher doesn't have time to ask for the list to be refreshed at the convenience of the other staff at the University, and everyone has better things to do.

I don't even think the teacher needs to know.. But I suppose if you want good relations with your teachers, then sure, go ahead and tell them. I think the teacher should/would laugh at you.. but hey, I guess some teachers actually care when they have no business caring.

Bah, but who am I?! In the end, these are all suggestions. Do what you think is right.

From my observations, if you miss the first two days of class, you may well be dropped. This however is irrelavent to my situation as it is not the first week of class.

Seems odd to me, that's all. In any case, as I said, it's just our suggestions that we can offer. Somehow, though, I think you knew which you were going for before posting.

Only which way I was leaning. After my first post, suggestions are all I can ask for here.

I should mention that I went to one of the Big Ten universities. I'm not sure about the policies of community colleges or other universities.

The policy here: If I'm not mistaken, you have 2 weeks - 1 month after the 1st day to decide if you want to drop the class or sign up for it. With that said, attendance on the first or second day isn't terribly important to us. It's also not uncommon for students to miss their first class. I missed one because I went to the wrong location and the right place was at least half an hour across the campus. It was somewhat amusing, despite the fact that it was snowing so hard that day too. Heh. Those were the good old days.
