They forgive not showing up almost immediately, and course changes always happen. They keep your name on the list for at least a week. The teacher doesn't have time to ask for the list to be refreshed at the convenience of the other staff at the University, and everyone has better things to do.
I don't even think the teacher needs to know.. But I suppose if you want good relations with your teachers, then sure, go ahead and tell them. I think the teacher should/would laugh at you.. but hey, I guess some teachers actually care when they have no business caring.
Bah, but who am I?! In the end, these are all suggestions. Do what you think is right.

The policy here: If I'm not mistaken, you have 2 weeks - 1 month after the 1st day to decide if you want to drop the class or sign up for it. With that said, attendance on the first or second day isn't terribly important to us. It's also not uncommon for students to miss their first class. I missed one because I went to the wrong location and the right place was at least half an hour across the campus. It was somewhat amusing, despite the fact that it was snowing so hard that day too. Heh. Those were the good old days.
