Existence...

I don't know what's happened to me, but all of a sudden, I've never felt so depressed...it's like the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip...he walks under the stars and screams, "I'm signifcant!...said the dust speck...". Life just seems like a hoax to me now. I don't know what to believe...or how to believe in it...the thought that I really have only very little control over things bothers me...and what I am compared to the incredible universe around me...all I do is float on a rock in space, depending on God for everything...and it feels like...life...is just a void...a space I occupy. When I'm dead, my space gets taken...it's a neverending cycle...

I know it may not help much, but how can each one of us not be significant if we can choose to love God? To love other people? You may not have power over what you can do with your hands, but you have power in your heart. Who cares if people remember you or not, if they take up your space after you're gone. Christ will remember you. I think that's what counts.

I feel you pain, dude. Some days I feel like screaming, "There are some many great people that are so freakin much better than me! Why the heck am I still alive?!"
... but... He wouldn't create a worthless person, woudl He? You were hand made by him and he has everything in your life already planned out. :) One of my favorite verses:

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is thinking that they have to be the best to make a difference. Well, that is simply not true. I would refer you to the the parable of the talents in Matthew 25: 14-30. To those who have been given more, more will be asked; but everyone who is faithful will receive the same reward.

99.9% of people must accept the fact that no matter how good they are at something, there will always be someone who can do it better. Even then, "The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all" (Eccelsiastes 9:11b).

Still, you have to ask yourself: is it really worth the effort required to be "the best" at something? The answer is no.

Seems recent scientific findings have shown our solar system to be unique from any other we know of. Though our universe is massive and totally dwarfs us, we are yet still the center of it in God's eyes; all of it points to us. He knows each of us intimately and has a special, unique purpose just for you. Take heart, for your life does make a difference!

Don't worry about it, dude. Worrying brings no good. Your young, so am I, you've got a big life in front of you, unless it is your time to go. God still has a plan for you. You have a part to play, big or little, it's still important. Remember, your life affects the people you are around, more than you may realize. You don't have to be in the spotlight in order to change things too.

"For the whole world before thee is as the least grain of the balance, and as a drop of the morning dew, that falleth down upon the earth. But thou hast mercy upon all, because thou canst do all things, and overlookest the sins of men for the sake of repentance. For thou lovest all things that are, and hatest none of the things which thou hast made: for thou didst not appoint, or make any thing hating it." (Wis. 11:23-25)

We ourselves may play no great role in history, or may appear insignificant compared to the size of the universe. But we aren't, not to those around us. After all, if you're going to count by millions and billions, you have to start with one's and two's.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

That's well said, Tech. Remember, you have an impact, no matter how small, on every single person you meet.

Then do something that makes you feel significant, without shortchanging other people. Find a way to HELP other people.

Remember who you are in Christ. You are an adopted son of God, and a full heir with Christ in all of God's blessings. He has wonderful plans for you that are beyond your imagination! (check out my sig, too.)

Remember that by helping someone you are making a difference, even by creating this thread maybe you posed one question that many had, and maybe they found some answers here, so you are already helping, your are already making the difference. Be happy and know that you already made a difference (at least to me). ;)

I can't find the reference for it, and I don't have it precisely memorized, but the sparrow. If God care enough to notice each sparrow that falls, how much more must He care for us?

Most of the time it's lethargy and inertia that causes people to think that way and ruminate about their unproductiveness; if you want to feel better about yourself, the best way to do it is to actually do something about it. Do something - help people, improve yourself, learn something new, find a ministry...God wouldn't have created us if He thought we serve no purpose in this world.

You should listen to cbwing0.

Any comments from me would only echo his advice to you. With the addition of taking the most of what God has given you, Is not His grace sufficeint for our lives?
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.
