What kind of anime are you into? Fantasy, fighting, comedy?
I've been having these weird thoughts lately, like, is any of this for real, or not?

I think there's a Rurouni Kenshin movie out...
but I've just seen the series.

The series is great!
So, the movie's probably not far off.

Here are some of my recommendations:

Princess Mononoke (13+ for violence, but one of the best movies I have seen animated or non animated)
Rurouni Kenshin (aka Samurai X) Trust/Betrayal (If you like more serious stuff and can handle the content. 17+ for violence and a tastefully done sex scene. I can't recommend this without resveration becuase of the content, but this OVA series is so well done, it's hard not to recommend it.)
Castle in the Sky
Castle of Cagliostro in subtitles
Spirited Away
Iria: Zeiram the Animation
Tenchi Muyo the Movie: Tenchi Muyo in Love
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight
Record of Lodoss War OVAs
Big O
"Your sense of fashion, Roger, really reeks"-Dorothy, Big O

"Iria: Zeiram the Animation"

That is another good one....a little violent...but I love it...I can thank Ebay for that DVD.

my name does not come from NGE. at all. not a single object of any kind in NGE was associated with my name.

reason being; you see it, depending on people but usually is, you'll get hooked. and that ruins the relaxing time. NGE is not for times when you want to sit back and watch something that's fun.

in those times, it's better to watch Love Hina than NGE. unless you're me... whatever.

Two series I really like are Slayers and The Vision of Escaflowne. They were two of the first series I watched after I got into anime. They're both from the fantasy genre, if you like that kind of anime. Slayers is a very humorous series which isn't afraid to laugh at itself a little, but the characters are interesting and there is definitely some action too. The Vision of Escaflowne (be careful--rent the original Japanese subtitled version if at all possible--NOT the Americanized version, which I don't recommend) combines elements of mecha, magic, fantasy, and romance with excellent characters and great animation. In my opinion you can't go wrong with either of those series. And two that people already mentioned that I would agree with are Rurouni Kenshin and Record of Lodoss War (the original).

Whatever you end up watching, enjoy!

I've been meaning to ask this question for some time. I've always been very limited to what I can get my hands on  hehe through sadly you've probally seen all I have and more. But if it means anything I am looking into Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and ... Er- and Gah! I forgot *sigh* hehe Er- yeah, sorry. I knew there was a point to this message somewhere :shady:

Oh! lol it was Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door :hits_self

Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,

Dust thou art; to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul."

I've been looking for some good anime to watch as well. I might try to see Trigun. Unfortunately the Blockbuster I usually go to hardly has any worthwhile anime...

time to join an online dvd rental site. like netflix or rareflix. its a pretty good way to check out the first in a series before shelling out some money.

that animaniacs site seems pretty "pirate-ish" to me.

meh. Hollywood Video doesn't have much that looks like it is worth renting. then again i am an anin00b. :dizzy: i may try a nearby Blockbuster.

Walmart suprizingly has quite a few anime titles. What do you guys think of the Dragonball GT series? they had the episodes on a bunch of DVDs. i've caught DB abd DBZ on Cartoon Network form time to time, and both are pretty cool (i just hate the fact that they are an ongoing story and i always catch an episode in the middle of something. bah!)

I bought the Cowboy Bebop movie today. lol, we'll find out whether it was worth the money...

oh btw. thanks so much for the recommendations. i'll probably check out the rental sites, though something cheaper than $15 for a month would be good (meh, at that rate, might as well pay an extra $5 and buy it)

I also double the motion don't get into Eva... The show is ok, but the movie will leave you with deep emotional scars... It's just sick and disturbing...

My faves are I My Me Strawberry Eggs and Serial Experiments Lain.

IMMSE has a bit of fanservice and a girl struggles with homosexuality in it, but it's one of the few anime that I've seen that actually teach lessons... Trust me, if you watch the whole thing you'll see that any misgivings about content will go away...

Lain is very philisophical and very intelectual... Besides that, it's incredibly slow and a bit freaky. It's one that you have to watch all the way through to really understand, and then still the interpretation will be up to ther person watching... I definately dont' recommend this to everyone. In fact, I'd ask that only adults watch it. But if you're an adult and like intelectual stories, this is one of the most complex anime ever made.

Hmm... Neither of these is "mainstream" but who says you have to be mainstream?

Both of these anime have things that are going to bother some of you, Lain especially, but if you watch them and for Lain, if you really pay attention and try to figure it out, your worries will be silenced...

any of the macross is great
I n September of 2012 Megaroad-01 was launched with an escort of fleet of zentraedi warships. From that point on the mass-production of the Megaroad -class colony ship began and soon long-range colony fleets were routinely being launched from earth solar system at a rate of 1-2 per year.
In September of 2022 Megaroad-19 colony ship with it’s escort fleet left earth and headed south fifteen degrees to the right of the southern star. On a mission with three objection; One to search for a planet to colonize, two to see what the rim of the galaxy looks like, three to see if any zentraedi fleets are out there. On July 21, 2025 Megaroad-19 entered its ninth star system and named it the sierra system.
Orbiting the third planet is an asteroid that was some ten miles in size, and a moon that was named Karla.

You should definitely try Martian Successor Nadesico, it is the series that got me hooked on anime, however if you are looking for a little more action try Noir, Trigun, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, or Orphen.

Here are a few of my personal faves:

Gundam Wing
Inuyasha
Trigun
Samurai X
Rurouni Kenshin
Ronin Warriors (I haven't seen this in forever. I miss it.)
Please Save My Earth
Evangelion

and movie-wise

Princess Mononoke (The have this one at Blockbuster. I've rented it quite a few times.)
Spirited Away
End of Evangelion (See the series before this one though. I almost didn't understand it and I had an Eva-guru sitting beside me explaining it. ^_^)

And personally, I wouldn't go for DBGT. It's the powers of DBZ mixed with the characters in DB. A total re-hash of everything already done. Course, I've never really seen it, but that's what I've heard. Just personal opinion there. DBZ was getting kind of old for me anyway...redundancy at its heights...

Isn't that the one Bob said will leave you with deep scaring? NGE is kinda wacked if you ask me. Kinda need to know what age a person is before you recommend 18 and up titles. Me I'll never watch NGE. But I do like things like ranma 1/2 and inuyasha.

Inuyasha is awesome! I've read a few of the Ranma mangas and thought they were pretty good too. Rumiko Takahashi is an awesome author.
