Poll: CAA on the political spectrum?

Where do the Christian lifestyle and anime fandom primarily overlap? In politics, of course!*

Out of curiosity, I'm wondering how CAA members generally fall along the political spectrum. There's a pretty common tendency (or stereotype?) that modern Christians in the West are more conservative; anime fans and young people tend to be a bit more liberal. Does our anime fandom-ness (or youth, for some of us) skew the stereotype at all? Is the stereotype even valid in the first place? I'd like to quantify this!

Personally, I was raised Christian and conservative, but as I started paying more attention to politics, I found that I held a lot of fairly liberal beliefs; lots of people actually mistakenly assume that I'm left-wing (I've been called a Democrat, a liberal, or a terrorist on various occasions >_>). I don't know my leaning that much anymore-- I guess I self-identify as a moderate conservative with liberal viewpoints?

even though it's just a poll...it most likely will end up in someone saying something that will offend someone else...therefore creating debate and causing this thread to spiral into an unevitable doom. =_=; However, it is up to the mods to lock or not.

Man, I used to be, like really political...like I was so serious about it....Like I would absolutely despise beyond reason those who didn't agree with my political views....(note: this is not becuase of my parents but becuase of myself; just the way I thought)......

minakichan, your hypothesis of anime fans likely to be more liberal sets off some other thoughts in my head, mainly if there is a better hypothesis.

Personally, I find that I like/am interested in anime has more to do with my curiosity and/or willingness to accept artforms/cultural themes that are not from the West. I think this has to do with being raised by a Chinese mother for me, and also that I believe Christianity to be super-cultural, or it is above a man-made culture and can possibly be applied without changing every single aspect of said culture. Therefore, I still endorse/not endorse content based on my social and moral beliefs, but I am more willing to look at anime and appreciate it than a lot of people who are only comfortable looking at content made from a Western viewpoint.

So, wouldn't a better question would be like: Why do young anime fans in the West like anime? Are they mainly attracted to it for the possibility of seeing content that goes against traditional Western moral values/beliefs? Or is it mainly for something else, like art style or typical character archetypes?

I think that type of question will get better grasp at the heart of the matter, and make it more acceptable here on CAA for discussion.

I tend to lean Conservatively on some issues, Liberal on others, but on the whole I'd say I'm a borderline political agnostic these days.

I think Omega Amen's theory is most accurate: none of us had seen the thread yet. As the representative of the moderators, for the moment I won't make a decision. Obviously, no one should begin arguing politics or comment too extensively on such issues. The verdict on this thread's fate will come later.

@ Bakura fan- That does sound really good, but its sorta hard to believe something like this could happen. I mean I would like this to happen, but I just not sure. Man, wouldn't it be something if this whole country came under the rule of God(Well it sorta is, in the way the fate of the country is going, but not the people. I consider myself fairly centrist. I will say, though, that on foreign policy issues I'm strongly non-interventionist. Oddly enough, that stance tends to have some conservatives, and some liberals, favouring it.

I won't vote in this poll since neither the term "conservative" nor "liberal" is defined here, and as a result can only be thought of in terms of a strictly American political culture. As Mave pointed out, the nature of these terms will differ from country to country. For that matter, even within the United States these terms are only poorly defined and seem to cover a wide range of ideologies and positions. Unfortunately, too much discussion seems to proceed from the assumption that all such philosophies must be made to fit within one of two boxes. Worse, in many discussions there also seems to be the opinion that all things are matters of political debate, even when the subject is one that is clearly beyond politics (such as science).

My own political views are best described as being somewhere on the Christian Socialist spectrum. In terms of the history of ideas and ideologies, these economic views automatically place me somewhere on the liberal spectrum. In terms of American political debate, my views are some mixture of positions associated with the left and the right while (in my view), glaring inadaquecies in the overall ethical, economic, and socio-political approaches of both major political parties lead me to distance myself from affiliation with them. Even so, my belief that major changes need to be made to our current socio-economic structure makes the moderate label inadequate to describe me, so I'll stick with the liberal label.
