The Japanese are weird.

Talk about anything in here.

Postby AsianBlossom » Mon Dec 17, 2007 7:43 pm

I'm weird...I've been called that to my face and behind my back.

"Normal" and "weird" are just defined by the culture you live in, I guess. So think about it: somehwere in the world, we would be called normal, and in other places, we would be called weird.

In this case, by American (or wherever you live) standards, seeing the things that the Japanese find perfectly normal in their culture, one might find the Japanese "weird" because they do things differently. And in this case, "weird" is not necessarily a bad thing.

But that doesn't stop them from having some of the most interesting things I've ever seen! *is fascinated*

But seriously, if you get offended over "weird" stereotypes, you need to get out more often.

I'm not offended, all I'm saying in general, is that anyone is to say a entire ethnic group is weird for a certain culture of theirs is a stupid thing to do. Take me for example. I'm multi-racial, my heritage comes from \six different countries, Poland, France, Puerto Rico, Sicily, Africa and America.
Now some say that each of those ethnic back rounds have weird cultures and try to say every person within each is the same. When in reality that is untrue.
Stereotyping as a whole is also dumb imo. Its just not a good thing to do.
Like I said though I'm not offended.
You don't seem weird to me.

I'm weird...I've been called that to my face and behind my back.

Whoever said that about you my friend is mistaken. You're one of the nicest people I know here:). Along with Okami, Dan,Tsu, Radical Dreamer etc.
Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Gabriel, you're taking it too seriously. Nothing in the OP even hinted towards any Japanese Stereotypes, rather it showed some weird/interesting things that have come from Japan. If you don't think that girls posing at a camera with scary masks is weird, then you're weird. (I'm sure many Japanese citizens find it weird as well)

Oh and Koreans are weird. All they do is play Starcraft, Counter-Strike, Warcraft, and eat nothing but Kimchi and Rice all the time.

I was talking about something in general and am not taking it too seriously, Smarty. Well the whole mask wearing thing is not as strange as compared to the very weird and disturbing things I've seen.

I heard that Koreans did that, and don't really play Console games due to some bad history with China and Japan, I think.

Says who? Just because you live in America and have it drilled in your head that 18 is legal, doesn't make it unsound or wrong for other countries to have lower legal ages. What happens at 18 that magically makes a person an adult? Nothing. It's just an arbitrary age the government chose for no reason. Well, it is a well documented fact that the Koreans have a gaming gene that allows them to instantly pwn anyone in any game ever, even if it isn't multiplayer. There have been studies, you know.

We've got entire books of japanese fashion and odd inventions at work, like a mask for your face so that when you're eating Udon you don't get stuff all over your clothing. It makes you look like a giant blooming flower. OR! My favorite. The toilet paper roll hat. You just roll down in front of your face, blow your nose, rip it off, and move on.

Also, don't forget that the concept of a "minor" is a relatively recent concept in our culture. It wasn't so long ago that 13 was a perfectly acceptable marriage age for westerners.

Well age 18 is near the age of accountability in the Bible according to Exodus 30:14 and Numbers 14:29. I myself felt like a adult at age 18.

Age 13-17, is just not a good time to be getting married, given that a person hasn't even continued to live their childhood along with it the whole thing being odd. I didn't say all of Japan's laws are unsound or any other country, just the one where you can get married at 13 is unsound, well really age 16 with parental consent, my mistake . As in any other other country that endorses it, including some of the United States such as Alabama. Which the age to get married there is 16. Its a odd thing to get married while still a teenager. Even when one becomes a adult, its best to wait on God for that.

I do my best to never stereotype. And wasn't . All I said is that I heard that from somewhere, I didn't say I actually believe that. I believe Mary was estimated to be around 14, and Joeseph was probably in his late twenties or early thirties... Of course, I still think Cradle robbing is gross, but maybe that's my age... As those girls get older, there seems to be less of a gap... I mean, there's an almost 8 year gap between me and the youngest of the "legal" crowd, and I would have shuddered at thinking of that much of an age gap a couple years ago... Considering most girls want older men, and I have a baby face and not much life experience outside of the abnormal (Missions stuff, for instance) I, as a begger, may not be capable of becoming a chooser.

I don't recall anywhere in the Bible that says Mary was 14....I'll have to research more about that anyway.

Those verses have literally nothing to do with sex or marriage and therefore are inapplicable to such.
I myself felt like a adult at age 18.

Good for you. Most people don't, hence why you hear so many people say "I don't feel any different now that I'm x." Regardless of whether you feel like it or not, it still doesn't make anything unbelievable happen to your body or mind that suddenly makes you an adult. It's still just an arbitrary age created by lawmakers.
Age 13-17, is just not a good time to be getting married, given that a person hasn't even continued to live their childhood along with it the whole thing being odd.

That's your opinion, for one. Second, did you know humans are the only creatures on the planet that rear their young for so long? Even animals that live longer than us only spend a couple of years at most with their parents.

It's not odd at all. As Etoh stated, the concept of 18 being legal is actually very recent. This is why you think it's not a good time to be married, and why you think it's odd. It isn't odd or not a good time, it's just how society has influenced you. If you were brought up in say, the Middle East, you'd think the concept of women wearing a tank top and shorts would be horrendously evil. It isn't, of course, it's just how where you were raised affects your judgment of things. Same with teenagers getting married.
Even when one becomes a adult, its best to wait on God for that.

What's funny is in this whole conversation you're acting like 18 magically turns you into an adult. Lemme ask you this question. If 18 is when someone becomes an adult, then why do women gain the ability to become pregnant (and men the ability to impregnate) around 12 or 13? Do you think God made a mistake in how he created our bodies? I tell you my friend, God makes no mistakes. While I'm not endorsing people getting married and having children that young (especially not in this country), I am not condemning it either.

Quite true.

Perhaps so, perhaps not. Everybody in the Bible that was a adult had to be at least 18 and up, not saying they were.

It's not odd at all. As Etoh stated, the concept of 18 being legal is actually very recent. This is why you think it's not a good time to be married, and why you think it's odd. Society has not influenced me in anyway, only God has done that.
If I were born in Israel( which is in the in he middle East , I still would have no problem with a woman wearing that type of attire. After-all, that is the birthplace of our faith. God even says in the Bible , that a man shall lead the household, not a teen, child. Which is why the enemy constantly tries to destroy marriages between a man and woman. Even though there is the exception of the verse that mentions a child shall lead, but that's talking about pets.
I really do not like it when some try to say this and that about me, when in reality they don't know me or haven't even gotten to know me.

What's funny is in this whole conversation you're acting like 18 magically turns you into an adult. Lemme ask you this question. You're completely misunderstanding me, nowhere am I acting like when one reaches age 18, you become a adult, all I'm saying is that I know God intends marriage to be between a man and woman, and that children, teens are not ready for it. Nor do I think God makes any mistakes, even though you didn't say that.

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Oh, I agree. I can't understand a single word he says...and I probably don't want to. Then again, I'm more of a rocker girl anyway; I'm not so into hip hop and rap stuffs.

So......were those peeps doing that one dance after that anime dance?

Marriage tends to go hand in hand with sex. 13 is too young to be having sex - precious few people are mature enough, and psychologically prepared enough, for sex at that age.

Just because you live in America and have it drilled in your head that 18 is legal, doesn't make it unsound or wrong for other countries to have lower legal ages.

18 is a good age for marriage legality because you finish high school (barring any failures) at/around 18. I doubt that many responsible parents would want their children married while those children were still going to high school. The fact is that high school life is somewhat regimented, and seen as part of the maturing into an adult stage in one's life (and most folks I've talked to agree with this view of high school). Some mature faster than others, of course, but 18 is probably the median age, or average age, for when a person starts to truly feel like an adult.

Now, my maternal grandmother was married at the age of 16, but that was back in a time and age in my province in Canada when people would rarely finish high school.

What happens at 18 that magically makes a person an adult?

Graduating from high school, typically.

It's just an arbitrary age the government chose for no reason.

No, it's not.

Nothing "happens" at 18 to make a person an adult, therefore, you have no right to call the laws of other countries wrong.

He has a right to call any secular law he wants to "wrong", Nate. Don't be so defensive.
