Postby jon_jinn » Fri Nov 16, 2007 4:23 pm

i'm looking for some recommendations for some good asian dramas. i'm looking more for comedy or action/adventure genre, but any suggestions are fine. it'd be good if you could note any objectionable content featured in the series. thanks.

My mom watched it...it was like out of some shoujo manga, from what she described to me. Dramas that I liked were some old ones, like Yun-een-dul, or Lovers, which is like a Korean equivalent to Friends. I still liked it a lot. I'm not sure where you would find it.

If you want action/adventure, Korean history dramas are pretty popular. Dae Jang Geum is like the poster child of awesome history dramas. I can't really summarize it, but it's about this woman named Jang Geum who is brilliant AND revered, which is near impossible in Korean antiquity. She was first a cook for the royal house and then a doctor, eventually healing the king himself. You follow her childhood to adulthood, but it's so good. It was popular all over Asia.

Dae Jo-young and Jumong are also supposed to be excellent Korean history dramas, which are more action-oriented than Dae Jang Geum. Here's a link about Jo-young: http://kbs-america.com/bbs/view.php?id=eng_pr&category=1&no=37

There's just violence in the history dramas above, like people getting arrowed in the back sometimes. There's no nudity or offensive sexual material, unless concubines offend you. All the women are VERY fully clothed, lol.

In Yun-Een-dul, if you ever find it, there's a couple who has premartial sex. They never say anything about it, and the only reason you know that it happened is that the girl says she's pregnant. And...that's it.

You can find these at YesAsia, if you are interested.

Then there was this...Korean historical drama that was CSI-esque. It was interesting, but I only saw one episode. I forget the name too.

I watched an amazing show a few years ago called Jyoou no Kyoushitsu (The Queen's Classroom). It was tremendous. It's about a classroom's (and particularly, a strudent's) struggle against a dictator-like teacher who takes over the classroom...way more interesting than I thought it would be when I started the series. One of the better live-action shows I've seen, asian or otherwise. Fur reals.

I don't think there was any objectionable content whatsoever.
Hooray for zero-G.

I'm more of a Japanese drama fan, and I cannot pimp LIAR GAME enough. It's more of a logic- suspense- mystery drama than anything else. It's got a lot of suspension of disbelief, but it's a great story.

Essentially, the story is about a very naively honest young woman named Kanzaki Nao who receives a package in the mail containing 100 million yen and an invitation to participate in the Liar Game Tournament, a competition with selected individuals who will try to steal money from each other through deception. If one wins, s/he returns the starting money to the LGT office and keeps the rest; if s/he loses, s/he has to go into debt to return the starting money, and the mysterious LGT office will use all means necessary to get the money back. Nao accidentally is forced to enter, honestly and foolishly loses her money, and has to ask a former swindler named Akiyama Shinichi, who just got out of jail, for help.

Like I said, a little out there, but the logic puzzles keep you thinking and the plot keeps you in suspense. And it's not girly in the least. The female lead is played by Toda Erika (Misa in the Death Note films) and the male lead is Matsuda Shouta (Nishikado Soujiro in Hana Yori Dango).

A new J-Drama based on the series Honey and Clover just aired in Japan today, so you might want to check it out! I haven't actually watched the first episode yet, but I've read the manga and seen the anime, and it's definitely one of my favorite series. It's got a great plot, characters, humor... I like everything about it. And I really doubt that the TV drama will have a lot of offensive content in it, if any at all, so that's good.

Here's a trailer if you want to get an idea of what it's like! :D
