Death Note New Anime on Adult Swim

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

Note that the violence isn't of the people getting in half variety. The Death Note kills typically by heart attack, so the deaths aren't gory. However, it deserves the rating for the concepts.

In the entire series there is very little nudity (someone will have to weigh in on how the scene with Mello and the shower works) and no real sexual content.

If we get "teen killings from this anime" news stories, then yes. Otherwise, however, I would hope Death Note would generally improve the mainstream impression. Unlike some other titles focused toward children, it has an intelligent plot, solid writing, and deals with serious issues. Light may be the protagonist, but he is not glorified.

Hey, it happened in Belgium.

Yes, there have been a lot of people who read Death Note and saw it for its unique and intelligent plot. At the same time, there are also a lot of people who read it and thought, "Man, I wish I had a Death Note so I could kill George Bush and all those people in my class who make fun of me for watching anime." And unfortunately, Adult Swim's audience includes a lot of people who fall into the latter category.

I dunno, my parents got on my case for even liking a series called "Death Note." If they had actually seen the shinigami or the crucifix imagery, they would probably get even more worried than they are already. It's difficult to explain "Blah blah plot blah literary value blah blah intriguing discussion on society's values and the absolutism of morality blah" to people with already negative preconceptions who don't have any interest in actually finding out more than a cursory examination of the series.

Well, it ran in Shonen Jump originally so Japan evidently didn't have any problems with aiming it at a younger audience (although, it could have easily run in an older-skewing magazine). At any rate, I doubt there will be any sort of outcry over it or anything.

What rating have the episodes been on Adult Swim anyway?

Does anyone have a quick/mini Death Note review? Just looking out for the main stuff like the sexual things, cursing and such. I'm not upsetted easily with demon/spirits (if there are any in this show) so you don't have to go into those details.
But, if anyone has watched Death Note before, and is willing to post something (or mail me about it), then please do so! =D Thanks for the help!

The others are right. Sexual content is pretty much nil. Language should be no worse than Bleach.

We have a review of the manga on the site. The show's been given a TV-14 rating.

I saw it last Saturday.

It was interesting, because Light seems lighthearted in the show and in the manga he has a malicious and intimidating look. I expected his voice to be deeper and L's to be lighter (since he acts childish).

You know, I have to agree with the fact and kinda worry that people who want a Death Note to harm others with would most likely watch/read Death Note.

Well gamergirl2 this show isn't for the faint of heart(No offense). Its actually not like I expected to be, I thought it was going to be alot darker than it is. But its really a very intriguing show, its more than just killing people by know their name and writing them down into some book named a Death Note. Nah, it contains many other themes. One of the themes Ive found is the false sense of justice and that each opposing force(Light and L) each have their own idea justice. And plus Ryuk isn't scary at all, I actually think he's there for comic relief(But thats just my take.).

Yeh.

First time I saw Ryuk (in the review section), I actually laughed. Then I became freaked out. But eventually, when you become more familiar with him he does seem like comic relief (which is needed in such a dark manga/show).

Ryuuk is just modeled after a harlequin clown, basically. So yeah he is a joke.

Personally, I find Sidoh and his personality cute... don't ask, I just do. Rem I like too.

That last episode was a nail-biter! Now Light's not being so picky about his victims. This is getting interesting.

Question: Do they anime and manga have the same ending? I had the one spoiled for me, therefore if they are the same they are both spoiled. ><

You've had them both ruined, yes. But even knowing the ending it should still be fun getting to that point.

I was rather tempted to answer "It seems the same until the very end, then suddenly [insert something bizarre]" but decided to play nice.

Emulate Light Yagami? Not if they've actually finished the series. The last chapters/episodes are pretty telling of his character.

Wellll apparently some kid got in trouble for writing names in their own Deathnote book. ^^; and the kid was like, a senior in high school.

I could see an ignorant 13 year old doing something like this...but a SENIOR?! WHAAT?

I wouldn't worry too much about this. I'm more worried about the Death Note manga murder in Belgian.

The what?! When did this happen?!

Oh, and now that I finally got the chance to sit down and watch an episode of "Death Note"...it's like watching an animated version of chess being played between "L" and "Kira"...

BTW, "L" Reminds me of a shaggy dog when I finally see him in the light.

It happen in late Sept and wasn't reported over here untill Oct 3rd.

They found a body that had two notes that said "Watashi wa Kira dess", which is a misspelling of "I am Kira". Also, the location of the victim is close to the highest point of Brussels, which they feel is a symbolic location since Kira acts as a god of death in the manga.

The detectives on the case think that it maybe a practical joke done by the medicine students at one college. Still, the Belgian police fear they are dealing with a serial killer. The Belgian news media started calling it the Manga Killer.

Oy vey. Why do I have the sinking suspision that if this EVER hits the mainstream news, we'll never hear the end of it?

BTW, on the last episode, did anyone pick up on a bit of an accent in "L"'s voice? Especially when he said his alternate name "Ryuzaki"?

Wow this episode was really good! Im sorry but I just find myself rooting for Light, please don't call me a heathen for doing so. I mean its like
Come on Light, get her name so you can be home free. I found it funny when Light wrote down her alias on the page of the deathnote, and you she didn't die at the moment. I remember Ryuuk laughing his head like he was going to die. But then it came to feeding her lies and well she eventually buys into them and shows her drivers license. Now this is the part that creeped me out the most when she asked why did he keep looking at his watch and I just lost it(Meaning I got terrible chills) went he said "Im kira". He said it perfectly by the way, I mean you couldn't find a better person to say it as evil and scary as Light did. But one thing bothers me though, one of the special task members was walking by while Light was looking at Naomi's license. Im not sure yet, but could this be Light's fatal flaw? I mean Light was witnessed to be with her up to the moments to her suicide. Theres really nothing more concrete than that. Otherwise I just thought it odd that it was like a race to figure out her identity before that special task man got there.

Wow, Light is a smooth operator! He's pretty good at lying! I'm impressed... I'm finding myself upset with the girl, though. Once again great episode!( Although I could have done without the whole dirty mag thing.) But don't y'all ever think that Ryusaki(Or L) is being a little overly analytical? I know he's supposed to be, but really though are there actual people like that?
