Death Note New Anime on Adult Swim

Unlikely. The only other company who has ever cared about Shonen Jump properties is Funimation, and Viz is heavily connected to Shueisha so I strongly suspect that they are much more likely to win the licenses on popular Jump series like Death Note.

I posted this over at Anime Angels just today, but thought it would be applicable for this topic as well...

Death Note is a series that I have a really hard time classifying. I've watched it all the way to the end (Episode 37), and I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, the conflict between Light and those chasing him (L and others) always keeps you guessing. The main characters (except Misa) are all highly intelligent and resourceful, and it's a great mental workout.

On the other hand, I've never in my life watched a series that caused me to root against the main character the entire way through (though there is one point where you might actually start). Someone with the power to cause death to anyone whose name he knows and face he can see, and to then use that power in an attempt to become the God of a new world order where crime doesn't exist (by killing all the criminals first, and then the people trying to stop him) raises all kinds of moral dilemmas in my mind.

I won't say anything about how it turns out, since I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but there were things that happened that saddened me and also made me quite happy.

I guess the bottom line is that this series is okay if you're quite strong in your faith and can separate the concepts of false religion from reality (isn't that true of most things these days?), but overall the series is very dark, so keep that in mind.

Best,
~JohnnyG

(I watched the first episode on the Adult Swim video, and I must say, I was impressed. Light's VA did an above average job (and that's something from me considering I hated how he did Sai in HikaGo...), and the rest were also very good. There weren't any below average extras, which is also very impressive, since that tends to drag some series down. All in all, I'm looking forward to the rest of the dub.)

btw:The Japanese seiyuu for L is the same one who did Usopp and

Well, I have to say, I'm quite impressed with the dub thus far. Light's VA does an excellent job at making him sound crazy, but he doesn't overdo it. Additionally, I like how they kept the OP and ED in tact, and with subtitles, at that. I saw the first nine episodes of Death Note fansubbed and never finished it due to overall busyness and the fact that fansubs soon became obsolete after licensing, but I'll definitely be finishing it in its dubbed run. I'm just glad that they're finally getting an idea of how dubbed anime should be aired on TV. XD It's nice.

Additionally, it's nice to see a darker anime making a televised run. Most of the stuff you usually see is so brightly colored and has that shounen-y feel, but this show has a much darker atmosphere with more polished animation. 'Course, as I haven't watched AS in about a year, I'm probably forgetting something, but suffice it to say that I think it's a nice change for televised anime. XD

I've loved Death note since I first saw i when it was on episode 11 in Japan. It's such a good anime. They did alright with the english voices, but the Japanese ones win. :P

Brian Drummond did the voice of Ryuk. He did the voice of Allen in Escaflowne and Zechs Merquise in Gundam Wing.

XD My dad watched more than half of it with me before he crashed on the couch...he was a bit confused methinks, but I wasnt entirely understanding it all myself (As I know almost nothing about it XD)

I really liked it! :D I loooooooved the animation.. Like when Light (I thought his name was Kira or something XDDD) was writing all those names down and the music was playing and he was being really exaggerated with his writing! IT WAS AWESOME!

I looove the music it fits really well with it! and the voices seem very good. Light's voice is really good! I mean...he creeped me out when he sounded crazy...but I think that was the intention.

Good! I wasn't the only one who was thinking he was being OVERLY elaborate with his writing! I'm intrigued by this series even more now that I've seen it fullscreen. I was kinda hoping to see the mysterious L in the first episode, but I can see why they left him out except for the opening credits--gives the viewer a chance to absorb what they just seen.

Stupid question: Does Light use a pen or a mechanical pencil? :hits_self

Well, Kira is more of a pseudonym by which the general public knows him. XD Light is his real name, but yeah, everyone else knows him by "Kira," or "Killer," later on.

Regarding that, I wonder if the anime will refer to him as "Kira" or "Killer," since Kira is the "Engrishy" form. Hmm.

L will make his debut in episode two. XD Honestly, that was the episode that hooked me on the series for a time (before I fell behind watching it). His debut is very, very cool. XD

I thought episode 1 was an overrated mediocre piece of crap for the following reasons:

Music:
Opening Theme:This was rather a bit of unmemorable J-Pop.Not as good as the jazzy opening to Boogiepop Phantom and definitely not as good as
Tokko's opening theme 'Nothing'.

Background Music:Overstated. The fact is it was at one point too loud.
When Light was in his room I half expected to hear O,Fortuna break out!

Closing Theme:There was one?!

Art:This was probably the best part of the episode.

Characters:
Light:Drama Queen who has the infernal habit of internalizing everything.
Once he realized he was the Villian he should have stopped it.I mean the habit is annoying and I would really have loved to see him get punched in the nose once because he is such an annoying brat!

Light's Mom:Totally useless to the episode. They could have done the entire episode without her and no-one would have noticed the difference!

Ryu:Why are the Shimgami so durn UGLY?They could use beauty tips from the Hollows on Bleach!

Plot:There was one? This was so full of holes that you could have flown the
Enterprise through it.

Overall rating::thumbsdow:thumbsdow:thumbsdow:thumbsdow

Hopefully the rest of the eps.won't be as insultingly poorly constructed as this one.

I really do think you're being overly hard on this episode. If you didn't like it, I know you won't like the rest (well, maybe L will make you happy). Oh, and if you don't like this OP and ED songs, you'll detest the next ones (granted they're even allowed to show them on TV due to language o_O)

Good grief, ML. If you hated the episode that much, why even bother posting about it? You're being far too negative, and that's an understatement. And the plot is full of holes? In the first episode? I think I'm just too shocked that you're complaining about Death Note's plot, while you watch InuYasha...but then, it may be best not to go down that road.

Opening theme: I rather think the opening theme fits the show well, and doesn't sound too bad, to boot. Though I'd consider it "J-Rock" before I'd say it was J-Pop.

Closing theme: Yes, there was one. Perhaps you'd have noticed it if you weren't so bent on being so negative about the show at large.

Light: Yes, he IS the villain. What you probably have yet to realize is that in Death Note, the antagonist is the main character. The protagonist has yet to be introduced. This is a theme not unlike that of Shakespeare's Macbeth, so think twice before you start bashing it so ruthlessly.

Light's Mom: So she didn't have a huge role in the episode, so what? Is the author of the series not allowed to make Light seem like a real character, with a family? Or would you rather him be a flat, lifeless character? Wait, maybe you shouldn't answer that. And for the record, she does have a reason for being in the episode. It's how Light discovers that he's the only one who can see Ryuk.

Ryuk: And since when are "gods of death" supposed to be beautiful? Since when does any anime character have to look beautiful? I think you're missing the point on that one, entirely.

Plot: I can't even believe you're claiming there's no plot. It's like...InuYasha...and you claim there's no plot. My gosh.

And I love how you call the episodes "insultingly poorly constructed." Honestly, the only thing that's insultingly poorly constructed is your post on the matter. Geeze.

As much as I don't like the Death Note opening theme song, but saying that Tokko's opening theme song 'Nothing' is good, makes me not even want to read the rest of your little review about it.

After reading most of the manga and watching most of the anime, I'd have to say that everything flows pretty well together. I had my mother in law tape it for me since by the time I get home I'd have missed it *three hours ahead at our house sigh*.

I've never been interested in Death Note, but I watched it last night and I must say, I'm impressed. The art and detail was fantastic. The sound effects were great. And I'm pretty interested in Light's character. Cool antagonists are fun anyway. So yeah, I'll be watching this.

Also.

Tokko and all its crappy music is like an ant. A little screaming ant. Death Note's first episode is like a boot. You can finish this yourself.
