Someone by the username of "buddha" (Obviously not Siddhartha himself nor am I assuming this person has reached Enlightenment) is PMing people information about Buddhism. Make what you will of these PMs. I guess it's your choice to read it or discard it, but I'm just letting people know in advance so people don't go "ZOMG why am I getting PMs about Buddhism in a Christian message board?!"

OSAKA NOTE: For future reference, this is the kind of thing the staff really would want reported. What this user is doing in soliciting, despite the fact that he's peddling ideas and not products, and we don't permit that kind of behavior on CAA. :) Thanks!

Yeah, I had gotten one of those earlier, but I couldn't find any threads about it yet.

I guess it's kinda useless to point out here since most of you are Christians, but Siddhartha never actually claimed to be a god. He was just a teacher/philosopher, and those who follow Buddhism rely on humanistic paths to enlightenment in their 8-fold-path idea. Only Christianity is unique in Jesus being the one path to salvation that comes outside of oneself.

This guy wasn't making any claims to godhood on mine. Just saying Buddhism transcends all that stuff we find fluffy and fuzzy about our own religion.

Oh. *shrug* Well, not wanting to start a debate here, I'll just say that one thing I know as fact from experience is that I myself am a moron and doomed to failure and error. I can't have a drop of faith in a violent, irritable commie like me ever finding peace or salvation on my own, so I'd rather place my faith in Someone who I know by an examination of character will never fail me and holds the key to perfect peace.

Well, gee, I'd say it takes one to . . .

Um.

Joking aside, I can understand why someone would want to believe in a religion that involves working your way to perfection, but too much human experience [half of it involving the use of a mirror] says that this is impossible. I just can't reconcile the idea that humans can attain an ideal state on their own with the fact that humans are essentially morons. Myself included.

Mmmmm...I don't know. Possibly.

I got one of these PM's too (IT'S AN EPIDEMIC!). I hadn't opened it yet for fear if this was someone un-trustworthy, but it seems he or she is just trying to spread their own message. The question is, why here, and why to a group of strangers. They should at least introduce themselves. XD

Ah well, I might as well poke in just to see who this person is.

I got one, didn't even read it completely because I was fairly busy; I just responded something like "Hello, buddha, welcome aboard to the nuthouse  I pray you have an amazing ride here!~"
Or something.
I was distracted by the wall of text that was an Albert Einstein quote at the end of the PM, but I didn't feel like reading it, because I'd also just woke up....

Haven't gotten one as of yet...I thought something of this nature was considered a "Forum Violation" for soliciting of unwanted religious material?

That's exactly what I got too.

This is REALLY getting peculiar. I wouldn't call it being shy as this person is talking to complete strangers, but why in PM's?

*waves arms*

buddah, welcome to CAA. We would like you to post in the new member section of the forum as that would make it easier for us to notice you. We promise that we won't bite! Well kids...this is obviously a bot. Or someone acting like a bot. I would be surprised if this 'person' ever responded to anyones PM's or ever posted to the boards.

Why did they use PM's? Marketing, it's a different approach then a thread.

A robot? Not an actual person?

This is new to me, but still bizzare. If you're going to proclaim your faith in a non-human manner, you should explain where you come from and why you're going to a specific place. I'm sorry, but a hi message and a quote won't exactly make me think about Buddhism any deeper.

Either way, if it's just an advertisement then I feel relieved.

My software testing instincts tell me that the PM system is sensitive to bot-attack. Perhaps setting a cap of 3 unique PMs in a 24 hour period sent by the same user might help avoid this kind of thing in the future.

My apologies to the mods who might be drowning in PMs over this issue (I sent a PM about this to the mods before researching the issue - bad form, I know).

I've noticed a funny trend. Some really, really active users don't seem to be gettng these bot PMs, yet others who rarely post, like me (...do I have 20 posts yet?) seem to get them.

How are they even finding us? :eh:

Probably better to do about 10 forum postings before PM is enabled. Then any user will have to come out clean on public before sending off PMs.

But some of the people who got these have hundreds of posts (myself with nearly 300), but yet Kit-chan has thousands of posts and she doesn't have one...yet...

Might be a bot, not sure tho.
