Cannot save jpeg files

Postby Mave » Sat Sep 01, 2007 7:17 pm

I've noticed that recently my computer has stopped saving jpeg type files. I mean, I can still right-click and select "Save as" and that'll go smoothly.

But I will have no records or anything on that file on my computer. I use Firefox 2.0.0.6 and WinXP. Pls let me know if you need any more information. Would any of you have some idea what's going on?

I suspect that there's something wrong with my computer as a whole since it'll been freezing up more often recently. *fervently backups files*

Can you save them as a different file type? Have old jpegs on your computer disappeared? What about trying to pull images off a disc or some other type of portable memory? Have you tried saving to multiple directories and can you find a record of via running a full search?

That really seems puzzling, so I'm asking for further testing questions out of reflex.

Once my computer was saving any image from a browser, with the default filename "picture.bmp" or "image.bmp" or something, instead of what the filename was. And it was in BMP format. And it was independent of browser. That was annoying. I formatted and reinstalled to get rid of it (perhaps there was a non-formatting solution, but I knew it due for a format anyway).

Full backup in progress. ^^

UC, you know those are good questions.

Nope, I can't save them as something else; changing names do not help either. No old jpegs have disappeared (thank God). I've had no problems pulling out jpegs images from other drives or USB key. I've tried to save the image in different directories and still cannot find any trace when I do a search. [You can imagine how horrified I was after spending 2-3 hours saving images......or at least, thinking I was saving a bunch of images a few days back. What a total waste of time. Bah.]

However, what I've just discovered (like, a few seconds ago) is I can save jpeg images via my neglected barely-used Internet Explorer. I'm starting to think that the culprit is my version of Firefox although I haven't twiddled with any options/functions. I'm guessing that I should try re-installing the browser and see if that fixes the problems ....

...but how do I save my bookmarks? Anyone?

WarriorChrist, aha....I know what you mean although I don't face that particular problem. I seriously dread a formatting solution since it'll stall my online efforts.

Oi. That's weird. Try this in firefox:

Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks.

That should give you a new set of menu items. Now got to:
File -> Export.

You should be able to save all your bookmarks off-line that way. One you've got that, re-install the latest version of firefox and see if that solves your problem. You can use the same path ( except choose "import" ) to get your bookmarks back.

In the past my computer has come down with what I call "the bitmap disease" where it will try to save everything as a bitmap and give it a strange name. I've also run into the problem where I save an image and it saves it as some sort of wierd file that the computer can't recognize and open. One thing I've noticed that fixes that last issue is that for some reason if you rename it as you are saving it then it saves correctly. So just type some text in the name and it works then.

For example: I do the right click > save on a picture > the save window comes up > the current name is picture1.jpg > I change it to picture1skdj.jpg > press save button > now for some reason it saves correctly.

Weird I know, but give it a try if the other suggestions don't work. I've never found a solution to either of these issues without reformatting or getting a new computer, so I'm not sure what's actually causing them to do that. :(
