Bullsnakes?

Postby That Dude » Wed Jul 25, 2007 2:22 pm

Hey I got a question, do bullsnakes flatten their neck/heads when they get angry enough? I saw a snake today that did that and it looked like a bullsnake except that and the head looked a little more like a snake from the viper family. If anybody has an answer that'd be awesome.

I live in Iowa so they're very common there. But I do remember seeing a snake like that.

When I was biking I saw a snake that I was absolutely sure could have been a rattle snake so I panicked at first. It was a distance from me so I carefully stayed a distance while watching it move away.

You can easily mistake them for rattle snakes due to their pattens and the shape of their heads when they get defensive. It might be a form of mimicry to the rattle snake as a form of defense.

Here's an article I found about them, and it seems to describe the snake you saw: http://www.herpnet.net/Iowa-Herpetology/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=26
