Nokia beating Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS?

Postby Mr. SmartyPants » Mon Dec 04, 2006 4:21 pm

Yeah right! In their dreams!

They're nuts I tell you!

Somebody PLEASE tell me this is a hoax. It sounds too fake to believe. The N-Gage failed miserably, so why would they do this again?

Alright.

*cracks knuckles*

Avoiding first off the overkilling failure of the miserable N-Gage;

"He added: “The consumer will have to make a decision: does he wants a standalone gaming device with a limited browsing capability or a phone with an MP3 player, a camera and a bloody good games platform? I think consumers will be prepared to spend £300 (nearly $600 in US currency) on a phone that offers all those different things rather than £100 to £150 for a standalone games machine."

Unless I am going to be able to get me some Zelda, Final Fantasy, Megaman, Sonic, and Metroid games that aren't crappy ports, I will not be spending $600 on your bloody expensive mediocre piece of junk anytime soon.

The news comes after Nokia released a new study revealing worldwide mobile gaming habits. The research found that the average length of a mobile gaming session is 28 minutes, and that over 80 per cent of mobile gamers play at least once a week.

Yes. And then it's off to spend 4-5 hour sessions every day of the week with Zelda on my DS. The only thing this research proves is that your games are not good enough to hold my interest.

It might very well attract a subset of casual gamers, generally the people who like the flashy fun of complicated cell phones anyway, and might help crack into the female gaming market if they offer the right games bundled with a cutting edge phone. I dunno, this might actually attract a certain segment of the market, though I can't imagine regular gamers or gaming purists touching this thing, I know I wouldn't.

That's true. But in the end, it's going to be the lack of regular gamers buying the machine that will be it's downfall.

It's not unheard of. If they do it right, and seriously put some effort into it, you just never know. Now I can't say I'm too hot on the idea, and I wouldn't buy a phone in order to play games on it, but like Puritan said, I can see it appealing to a certain crowd. No sense in telling Nokia to throw their cards in just yet. Maybe they'll actually hit onto something. You just never know.

Thats what I was thinking...

people are complaining about the price point on the PS3 and still complaining about the price of the PSP, which is less than half the cost of this monstrosity. Honestly... even if it's 600 bucks, how good can it be if you wedge games (supposedly) competitive with a PSP, music, a camera, a phone and a screen big enough to support all of this into a "phone" platform. Its gonna be a brick of a phone, or an extremely bad MP3 player (see the mac I-tunes phone thing for more on this) or a microscopic screened, limited power videogame platform. More or less, this would be a blackberry with videogaming capeabilities. But even larger and more brick like. Bleagh.

Nintendo should just make a plug in device that turns the DS into a phone... it already has a mic and speakers, so all it needs is an antenna and a decoding chip or just a decoding chip that can tap into the WiFi antenna and switch it over to cell reception They already have had cameras on gameboys before (not great quality but still...it was there). Dosn't the PSP have a mic too? And whats stopping Sony from coming out with an eyetoy portable?

It's coming, actually. I'm not sure if there are going to be eyetoy-like games on it, but it's actually made for video conferencing. (I miss firefox and it's in text-box spellcheck right now...)

I don't think so, not that I can remember, at least. But Sony IS putting camera functionality in the PSP. So Sony will have a device that can play UMD movies (which isn't a big deal, but hey, it's there), camera functionality, MP3 player, wireless internet...all for about 200-250 bucks, and has way better games than this Nokia thing could ever hope for.

I don't get why a company would throw away money on something like this. I really don't.

*phones rings*

"Hello?"

"Hello valuable customer. Nokia is proud to announce a $600 phone with MP3 music, a camera, a phone, and a gaming device".

"Does it have Ouendan on it?"

"I am afraid not."

"Okay. Thank you for your time. Goodbye".

Reading this in retrospect, isn't the iPhone 600 dollars and was pretty much identical to this thing except it can't play games? And didn't it like...sell like mad?

I guess brand names are more important than the product itself.

Nah there not identical. The iPhone wins in terms of practicality and design (Touch screen, web browser, music, planning, organizing, etc). The N-Gage was more-or-less a cellphone that played video games, not to mention it was horribly designed. While the iPhone is too pricey for what it's worth, I will say it's one heck of a nifty device (And it got an 8.0/10 on cnet).

MSP, the Samsung Blackjack, Palm Treo, and even the Blackberry Pearl can do everything the iPhone can--and then some! You can't buy/play games or recieve picture mail on the iPhone (You have to send pictures through e-mail). The activation is a crapshoot at best (believe me when I say this--this last month, I've gotten no less than 300 calls about activation problems. And if you live on the coast, don't try to activate between the hours of 11PM to 2AM -- the system goes down for maintance) and the whole multi-touch screen thing--it's just a gimick they threw in. Seriously, I can see using it for browsing the internet, but other than that--meh.

Don't forget digital movie files (iPod format) and the new PSP will be able to play on a big screen with TV out. Check and Mate.

Nokia will continue to be a huge joke... Plus, they're mean little suckers... pull the guns out as soon as they see ya...

iPhone is simply a virus... A virus I wouldn't mind owning IF

it wasn't just AT&T
it were cheaper
it had games, and decent ones at that

As of now, with those three problems, iPhone is not worth a purchase... Not when my PSP and PS3 do so much more (with custom firmware, PSP can do VoIP, so it's like a cell phone with horrible coverage, touchscreen notwithstanding)

Yes they do (And I'm particularly fond of the Palm Treo). Though I do think the iPhone is still a sleek little device. Although it being an Apple product also helps it sell.

It's the sex factor. Apples are inherently sexy products, and that makes people want them. Something about all the slick curves and the beautiful industrial design. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I think it's less about the iPhone itself and more about what the iPhone is doing to the market at this very moment. It's wonderful!

well if you think about it, most people really only use laptops as a portable terminal to access the internet (I know I do). Those people really could just use iphones.
