A little Japanese translation help

Postby Towi Wakka » Thu Jan 15, 2004 7:43 am

Alrighty, when you're on an anime forum you are bound to run in to many people who can speak or write Japanese ^_^. I need a little help with 2 words in Hirigana (not to pronounce but the written letters). Can someone attemt to translate "Lunar" (or moon if thats easier) and "Gentle". Thanks a ton everyone!

Moon => Tsuki => つき、月

Gentle => Yasashii => やさしい

Is that what you wanted?

Ug. There's quite a few problems with that list, acutally... But I'm not going into them all. Just for example, though, Watashi may be formal, but it's still a contraction. It's watakushi if you want to be formal. And "urusai" translates better as "noisy." It's not a verb!

Also, just glancing at it, "iku ze" would be rather rude in most contexts (something like, "c'mon, I'm going, you (jerk/slowpoke/dummy)!" It doesn't really mean "Let's go" except in the challenging-someone sense. If you really mean to say "let's go (somewhere)", you'll never offend anyone with something like 'ikimashoo ka?'

Days of the week should end in "yoobi".

There are several ways to count, and while your list is correct for the Chinese numbers, there is a set of Japanese numbers from 1-10 which is used very frequently also.

Please be careful with these kinds of lists, especially with a language like Japanese where you can really be offensive to people if you're uncertain of how to speak correctly and use the wrong form (moreover, this list doesn't really explain those kinds of distinctions).
