I didn't even realize for years that the region maps on the game, which I thought were from a made-up land, looked strangely like real places in Japan...

I don't know about the town names, but yes, the setting for the Red/Blue/Yellow games is named Kanto, and is modeled after the Kanto region of Japan. Of course the name wasn't mentioned until the G/S/C generation, but the name "Kanto" was kept even in the English version.

Just for kicks...Johto is based on the Kansai region of Japan (though the Kansai region is a good distance away from Kanto in Japan, whereas Kanto and Johto are right next to each other in Pokemon).

The Sevii Islands from FireRed/LeafGreen are based on the Izu and Bonin Islands.

Hoenn is modeled after Kyushu.

Shin'ou (or Sinnoh in English) is modeled after Hokkaido, along with the southern half of the Russian island of Sakhalin, and the disputed island of Kunashir.

Orre from Pokemon Colosseum and XD is supposedly based on the Arizona desert.

Fiore (from Pokemon Ranger) has not been stated to be based on any region.

Yes, I'm a Pokemon nerd. >.>

EDIT: To return slightly on topic...

Not just the kanji. ALL writing was removed, oddly. In one episode a pet store is attacked and bags of pet food are strewn about the street. The bags say "PET FOOD" written in English on them. The words were removed in the dub.

I don't know if this has been said, but for me the most memorable is:

That flashback from one pice when luffy is a little kid talking to that pirate guy in the taveran. People are falling off their barstools because of the alcohol and luffy ask somthing like "Can I have some?" and the pirate guy (I forget his name... I havn't watched/read it in a long time) says "Sorry your to young for apple juice!"

>_> <_<; I'm sorry but that was so obious and hilararious.

the edit that sticks in my mind the most is one episode of Rurouni Kenshin on Toonami.

See, it was an episode where Hajime Saito was talking to Kenshin about an attack that is to come...
In one frame we see Saito talking as he holds a tooth pick (the way you hold a ciggy)
In another frame we see a lit and smoking ciggy, and then in the next frame it's back to a tooth pick again.

He also flicks the toothpick like he would a cigarette too XD.

Oh yeah, when those vitamins and nutrients get into your bloodstream, lives can be lost.

A bunch of weird edits can be found in the earlier episodes of Pokemon, but the one that sticks out in my head the most (especially in hindsight) is the episode when Ash looses his hat to a Primeape. Throughout the series, they call riceballs (Triangular shaped balls of rice with seaweed along the bottom that any self-respecting otaku would recognize) a DOUGHNUT! I didn't know any better back then, but in hindsight, I find myself thinking "How could I BE so dumb?!"

Also, from Season one of Digimon, there was a scene when Tai confesses to Izzy (Oddly enough, in a church in the Digital World) that when he was younger, he took his younger sister Kari out to play soccer when she was sick. She collapsed outside and had to go to the hospital. The next two scenes shows Tai's mom, clearly distraut with her hand raised and then shows Tai holding his cheek. Clearly she smacked him, but I think they cut that part out, and while I understand why they did it, I still think it's funny they cut it!

Here's some interesting stuff about Voltron that I wonder about:
1. In the original version, Sven died. In our version, he is taken off planet to be healed of the bite from Haggard's cat. Why did they think we'd be unable to accept Sven's death? Don't they know the target audience had seen death before?
2. In one episode, the pilots are relaxing by swimming in a lake. When Princess Allura joins them, she dives into the lake and the top half of her bikini is seen floating in the water, apparently having fallen off. I wonder if there were any edits of her in a rather "uncompromising" position
3. In another episode, we see that Prince Lotor has a concubine. Why did they allow us to see that?

Okay, this isn't as wacky or hilarious as some of the others, but I know there's an edit in Episode 6 of Fullmetal Alchemist. In the Japanese version, Ed slams his fist into his hand in frustration at not being able to do anything to help Gracia in childbirth, and when he grasps the basin of cold water he unintentionally transmutes it so it's warm again. But then in the American version, they changed him to clapping his hands together with his fingers interlocked, which looks rather weird if you ask me. And I think in the next shot with him in it, one of his hands is in a fist.
What was the point with changing that? Did they think Americans are so dumb they couldn't figure out it was basically the same as when Ed claps his hands? It's more realistic that Ed slams his fist into his palm anyway, since he's frustrated. He wouldn't exactly be clapping his hands with glee and saying, "Yippee! The water's cold! Gracia's going to die!"
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

Anyone want to see this film?

Image

It's a little similar to this one:

Image

The story to Warriors of the Wind is considered better though.

From Wikipedia:

A heavily edited and English-dubbed version of the film was shown on HBO and released on VHS by New World Pictures & Orion Pictures in the 1980s as Warriors of the Wind. According to Nausicaa.net, the voice actors and actresses were not even informed of the film's plotline and more than 30 minutes of the movie were cut from the film because New World felt that "the parts were slow moving". As a result, much of the film's narrative meaning was lost; many of the environmentalist themes were purged as was the main subplot about the Ohmu, altered to turn them into aggressive enemies. Most of the characters were renamed (for example, Nausicaä became "Princess Zandra"). The cover for the VHS release featured a cadre of male characters, who are not part of the film, riding the resurrected God Warrior — including a still-living Warrior shown briefly in a flashback. It was released around the world under various different titles for example, in Germany, it is known as Sternkrieger (lit. "Star Warriors") during that time.

LOL! I remember that! I just thought Tenchi was an extremely modest guy. XDD Once when he saw Aeka with a "one piece"...oh man...I'm lucky because I only read about what really happened.

DB had a lot of those. XD I remember once in DB, Goku was standing on a boat with red underwear...that kept shifting a little every so often so that it looked like it was like it was moving. It was so obvious it was an edit, I laughed out loud.

Then I read on a site that in one episode they had to uncover the invisible villain by making Master Roshi nose bleed on him by letting him see Bulma topless.

I saw that same episode, and instead, a random hand opened a can of tomato juice...XD

No!!! Not Warriors of the Wind!!! Whose idea was that, to mash together all sorts of stuff and mutilate a really good film?? Poor Miyazaki...an artwork of his was practically destroyed. Thank goodness Disney did an uncut version and is doing complete dubs while trying to preserve the Ghibli movies (well, with the exception of a few...)

That whole Blue Gender thing actually explains a lot.

As in one of the episode previews toward the very end of the series, one of the girl's was like, "PLEASE, FOR THE SAKE OF OUR CHILD," and I was like.... "...what? WHEN DID SHE GET PREGNANT?"

Heh. Fun times really. It always amuses me when the English Dub removes something, and then the removed context is referenced later. Kind of like in the American Sailor Moon, "Sailor Says" 1) existed and 2) there would always be footage that was edited out of the actual DVD in the Sailor Says.

and I remember being like 8 years old and constantly rewinding my VHS's because I would always think I missed a scene XD

Oh I'd also like to mention that in the original Japanese version of Pokemon, there were a few references to the anime Utena......apparently, that show was meant to be a CHILDREN'S SHOW at some point in time... WHAT THE CRAP?

...but no more talk of that, as it's DND. ><

Heh I remember that too. I was like "wha? I don't remember that part...." if there was something I'll never forgive them for doing on the dub, it's Usagi's voice. Yurusenai yo!!! >_<

Um... Utena was always a children's show.... The manga was serialized in Ciao, a shojo magazine for girls around 9-13.

Anyway, I would have to say the weirdest edits I've seen are in One Piece for the same reason everyone else has posted.
Sailor Moon edits were hilarious as well. In the dub Dic removed the scene in the first seasons' last episode when Rei slaps Usagi, yet Serena is still shown holding her cheek out of pain. "If it was edited out why do I still feel the pain?!" Serena thinks. I'm not sure if this counts as an edit, but the Sailor Moon R movie dub was hysterically bad. Especially if you watch the dub on the uncut dvds.

I remember some edits in Zatch Bell that had to do with guns. I remember one episode where all the guns were painted neon green and it looked like they were glowing...radioactive guns I guess. In another episode, the gun had different colored circles drawn over the shape of the gun so that it looked like some weird laser gun, super soaker hybrid. I just have to shake my head and laugh when I see edits like that though. ^^

Reminds me on the one ep where she got drunk off champagne but changed in the dub so it was punch, yet still bad rosy cheeks and acted a little goofy and all... I guess pretty much like in the One Piece apple juice thing^^ Cept I don't think I noticed on that ep when I was little (guess they fooled me!)

Disney edited Pom Poko.

Instead of the male tanuki saying they have testicles, they use the term "raccoon pouch" instead. Weird. :eh:

they show most of the anime shows on friday nights and there's always a disclaimer thingy at the beginning sorta like "this is for an older youth audience. viewer discretion is advised"

i don't really notice too many changes but in gundam seed destiny, the ending has a few scenes of some of the characters nude, so they kinda quickly show those for like half a second lol but they kinda edited out anything graphic so that the characters are nude but not really?? i guess since the network puts it on at a later time they didn't really edit out too much XD. i was watching a rerun episode of eureka 7 with my brothers the other day and they didn't edit out the backsides of the men in the showers lol my brothers were like Wha-? O_O i didn't think they show that lol but i guess that's not too bad compared to other stuff.

also in inuyasha they don't edit the language too much. they keep the words like "wench", "bas****", "idiot" etc. still in there haha but the network doesn't realize that the kids know that friday nights is when the anime shows are on so they all stay up and see all that anyways.

Maybe they wanted to make it like eternal sunshine, and someone was actually having their memory erased... hopefully of the butchering that shows like that have gotten. Not that I'd watch one piece even unbutchered, but still...

I have some funny edits that ADV does... One of my favorites from Nadesico was when the tech guys took over the Nadesico to wipe out the ship's computer, the mechanic guy (can't remember his name at the moment) said
"What happened, is there a proctologists' convention in town?"
I laughed so hard... That's a different kind of edit, though. That's sort of the opposite kind... They were trying to replace the Japanese joke with one that would be funnier to an English speaking audience...

I thought it was funny in Azumanga Daioh when Tomo got ahold of the cat costume in episode 7 and took it out for a "test run".

And to the above spoiler, what?!?!?! *falls over laughing* What does that have to do with anything??

Well, I spoilerized it because it was mildly iffy... Some people get bugged by stuff like that... Not because it was an actual spoiler.

In context, the line made perfect sense, but I think the actual Japanese line was more like "Who are they?"
