How to get rid of a cold, or hold it off...

Postby Destroyer2000 » Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:12 pm

I feel as if I'm getting a cold. Coughing slightly, stuffy headedness, sore throat. Yeah. How can I get rid of it quickly, before Tuesday, or atleast hold it off for a day without symptoms? I'm going to a local amusement park with a group of people, and I also have something important to do that day which I don't need to be sick for. Thanks.

There's this stuff called Zicam that you can take when you start to feel the first symptoms of a cold, and it's supposed to shorten your cold. That's about all I know of, though. XD

Yeah, but it's gel you apply into each nostril.

Another thing is lemon and ginger.

Actually, they have a chewable version out now. It tastes like a starburst if you chew quickly. XD

Zicam = The Win. They're absolutely right.

Also, something you can try if the symptoms start to set in pretty badly is this stuff called Simply Saline. It's a nasal spray, just a saline solution, no medication. You can use it to wash out your nose/sinuses and it helps with congestion quite a bit.

There's an old saying. "Feed a fever, starve a cold."

Or is it "Feed a cold, starve a fever?"

I can never remember...

Ah, thanks for the advice. I went to the store and bought some Zicam...I hope its not too late for it to work, some ginger, lemon juice, and honey. How do I make the lemon juice/ginger stuff?

They have tea blends with that flavor. Should be a lemon ginger tea blend at your grocery store. That is, if you like hot tea.

I have a recipe for a cold remedy that we got from my brother-in-law who says he got it out of a magazine or something, so I think it's safe to share it here. It's more for sore throats, but it might help. :) (Pardon my mix of metric and Imperial measurements below; I'm working from memory here.)

In a really large pot, combine together:

2 L cola
1 tsp aromatic bitters
1 tbsp honey
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 piece of thumb-sized ginger root (peeled and grated)

Bring mixture to a boil, and then switch to low heat and simmer for 30 minutes.

[Edit: Before drinking, make sure to strain out the ginger first -- and maybe let it cool down a little bit too. You can drink it either hot or cold, though.]

I'm sipping a cup of the stuff right now for my own cold; hope it helps you feel better too. =^_^=

...And the saying is indeed "Feed a cold and starve a fever." When you eat, your core body temperature rises a little bit; but when you have a cold, it's lower than usual.

I hear that chamomile tea works wonders.Although if nothing works you may have to just tough it out.

Vitamin C helps. Sleep, of course, and water, but these are mostly to help you get better, or shorten the duration.

The best thing I've discovered is Cod Liver Oil. Seriously.

I don't like the taste, but when I feel myself starting to get sick, I'll swig a little, and most of the time wake up feeling fine (or nearly fine) the next day. It's really amazing stuff.
