Mushishi

Postby Fish and Chips » Mon Mar 19, 2007 1:29 am

A charming, fantastical show from out of nowhere. Anyone else watching it?
The story features ubiquitous creatures called Mushi that often display supernatural powers. Mushi are described as beings in touch with the essence of life, far more basic and pure than the grotesque creatures we are accustomed to. Due to their ephemeral nature most humans are incapable of perceiving Mushi and are oblivious to their existence, but there are a few who possess the ability to see and interact with Mushi.

One such person is Ginko (ギンコ, Ginko?), the main character of the series. He employs himself as a Mushi master (蟲師, mushi-shi?), travelling from place to place to research Mushi and aid people suffering from problems caused by them. The series is an episodic anthology in which the only common elements among episodes are Ginko and the various types of Mushi. There is no over-arching plotline.
Now usually, I prefer spanning narratives over episodic stints, but this show seems to maintain its own universe well enough that I don't really mind. Beautifully drawn and well animated, and so far (only seen a couple of episodes) no objectional content, unless you consider the Mushi themselves and the mythology that surrounds them a bad thing (and I don't).

So, any fans?

I love Mushishi. I think it captures the emotions of all the people quite well, and expresses them powerfully.

Definitely one of my current favorites.

Smartypants, I'm thinking the two of us should eventually find something to disagree on, before all these horrible rumors get started that we're secretly the same person.

I am quite in love with this series. I wasn't sure how I felt about how episodic it was, but it's absolutely beautiful and well done, so no grudges held here. XD

<3 Ginko.

EDIT: Yaaay for Fish and Chips' avatar! XD;

Looks like Mushishi's slated for a summer 2007 release. I can wait that long.

This series has "Sleeper Hit" written all over it. Let's hope the uncultured masses can quit arguing about Naruto vs. Bleach long enough to pay attention to it.

Thanks

This isn't the first Mushishi thread, but it has been long enough since the last that this one is fine. I don't think I want to rewrite my opinions on the series, though, so in brief: I found it an enjoyable experience but it ultimately began to lose its appeal for me due to the lack of an overall plot. Except for a few episodes (like Ginko's backstory) they felt fairly bland once the general unique feeling of the series wore off.

I do not believe so. If you wanted to sample the series, however, YouTube has plenty of clips.

I've only seen the first ep, but seemed quite good of a series^^ I want to see the live-action too eventually^^ Amusing how the actor looks EXACTLY like the main character (whose name escapes me...) of the show...

i heard about the anime about half a year ago. i was eager to try it out but i was into too many series at a time to ever give it a shot. now, i've seen the first episode and am eager to watch the rest. thing is, i can't get the rest of the series at the moment. so i'll probably finish the series later on. even though i've only seen one episode, i can tell it's gonna be an awesome series.

"God the great Creator of all things doth uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by His most wise and holy providence, according to His infallible foreknowledge and the free and immutable counsel of His own will, to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy."

"All of Christian life is ceaseless worship of God the Father, through the mediatorship of God the Son, by the indwelling power of God the Spirit, doing what God commands in Scripture, not doing what God forbids in Scripture, in culturally contextualized ways, for the furtherance of the Gospel, when both gathered for adoration, and scattered for action, in joyous response to God's glorious grace."
- Mark Driscoll

"Believers do not pray with the view of informing God about things unknown to Him, or of exciting Him to do His duty, or of urging Him as though He were reluctant. On the contrary, they pray in order that they may arouse themselves to seek Him, that they may exercise their faith in meditating on His promises, that they may relieve themselves from their anxieties by pouring them into His bosom; in a word, that they may declare that from Him alone they hope and expect, both for themselves and for others, all good things."
- Martin Luther

"I have to tell you first that I am ready to die. I have put my affairs in order. Your supreme weapon is killing. My supreme weapon is dying, because when you kill me, people all over Romania will read my books and believe on the God that I preach - even more than they do now."

Well, I'll wait and see how well it holds up. Though the same could be said for most mystery and thriller series; once you've read through them once, it's usually not the same doing it again, knowing who does what and why.

Certainly; your impression of the series could be completely different from mine. I have not finished the series, myself, for the reasons I stated. If someone here has seen all of it and thinks it improves tremendously near the end, tell me, otherwise I will likely never be motivated enough to return to it.
