New members look!

Postby goldenspines » Wed Mar 07, 2007 8:07 pm

(To the Mods: If this is in the wrong place for this, feel free to move it.)

It has come to my attention that there are many new members(and even some older ones) are acting rather, well, noobish. So to help end this epidemic, and being a bit of a new member myself, I've decided to enlighten those members and others on some basic rules that I have learned that can be very helpful and may just prevent the bannation of a poor new member's souls.

1. Be Polite. This is a must. If you can't be polite, you have already failed.

2. Don't act like you own the world.(or CAA) You can be confident, but not overly confident.

3. Always type in proper grammar, even in the chat. If you fail at this, the Grammar Ranger will get you! o.o

4. Don't go around picking fights. That's one of the best ways to get banned. Besides, ShatterHeartArk and UC Pseudonym could beat anyone to pulp in an argument.

5. Don't Flirt. It's immature and it's a good way to get your soul eaten by a Mod. (or Nate.)

6. Whatever you do, don't press the red button!

7. Please don't use over 3 exclamation points when typing anywhere. They take up too much space.

8. If you have a question or are confused about something. Don't panic. Just ask someone nicely what the answer is. For example:
A bad way to ask a question -
"Waaaaaahhhhh!!!!!!(note: too many exclamation points) I can't figur dis out!!!! can some1 help me plz Im such a nooob LOL leik thx g2g by"

Good way to ask a question -
*innocent eyes* "Please sir/mame, could you please tell me <insert question here>

9. Don't spam. SPAM = Stupid, Pointless, Annoying, Messages. (it's also a meat too...)

10. Make your posts beneficial to others, not just to yourself. To explain this a bit further, I'm going to take a quote from Lady Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth wrote: Proper forum decorum (for all forums, not just this one) is to make posts that contribute to the conversation. To misquote Thumper, "If you can't post something useful...don't post nothin' at all." (And yes, I cringe to think how many children probably learned their grammar skills from Thumper. )

Examples of posts that are not useful to any conversation:

"Me too"

"Yep!"

"I agree."

" :sniffle: "

In general, any one/two word post or one/two smiley post falls into this category. There are rare exceptions (except in nonsense threads created just for fun and that encourage such replies) to this rule, but by and large, such posts just are not worth the time it takes to post them.

If you're going to post, post a complete sentence that adds at least one new idea to the topic.

11. Don't be afraid of rejection. As long as you follow the rules, people will automactically love you.

12. Before you ask a question, make sure to check the sticky threads. Otherwise you risk being labled as blind.

13.The EDIT button! Put it to good use and don't double (triple, quadruple...) post. And this isn't a chat room. If someone doesn't reply within two minutes don't post, "Hey, where is everyone?" "Answer my question." "Come on people, talk!" or any variations of the like. If no one replies, let the topic die.
(you worded it way better than I could've, KawaiiNeko.)

14. Please don't type "u" when you mean "you," "r" when you mean "are," or use any kind of "internet slang." It's difficult to read, much less understand. (Oh, and Nate is cool for suggesting this.)

15. Don't dig up threads from the ancient past unless you have something really, really, really important to say regarding the topic.

16. Never feed the trolls. Don't reply to a post or a thread that a troll has made.

17. Be very careful when posting debates. (if you need more explaination on this, please ask.)

18. Don't post anything you wouldn't talk about in polite society.

19. And most important of all, have fun! And hope Mith has mercy on you.

(note: If anyone has anything they want to add, assuming people actually look at this, pm me and I'll see if I can add it to the list.)

If I've offended anyone I really want to appologize. Even when I'm trying not to, I think I can come off as a little... er... blunt? I guess that's the nice way of putting it. Anyway, again, to anyone I've offended, I'm really sorry!

Very nice, Goldenspines. Noob-dom prevention is always appreciated. ^^

I also highly suggest making friends with the Enter key. Nothing turns me off from reading a post quicker than one huge paragraph that takes up most of my screen. People are much more willing to respond if posts are legible, and nothing improves legibility more than paragraphs broken down into more sizable chunks.

Just wondering, does this include me? I certainly don't want to make myself unwelcome here.

o.o

Actually, the proper way is either Oo or O.o.

6. Whatever you do, don't press the red button!

To noobs, this is either a joke or unspecific.

10. Make your posts beneficial to others, not just to yourself.

I'm not really sure if my reply is helpful..In what way should it be beneficial? A good reading experience and/or good information?

11. Don't be afraid of rejection. As long as you follow the rules, people will automactically love you.

Not exactly true but nice to think about.

13.The EDIT button.

Then there's the extreme of over-editing. This makes it tedious for responding to other's comments. Thank you GoldenSpines for putting effort in this post. We need more people like you :)

Proper forum decorum (for all forums, not just this one) is to make posts that contribute to the conversation. To misquote Thumper, "If you can't post something useful...don't post nothin' at all." (And yes, I cringe to think how many children probably learned their grammar skills from Thumper. :forehead: )

To avoid confusion, this list is not pointed directly at any certain new members, nor was it made to attack anyone. I only made it to help people out. I will admit, that I may need these guidelines as well. Because no one is perfect. :)
Thank you for the comments. To tell you the truth, I was a bit worried this wouldn't get a good reaction, with me being a bit of a noob myself.

Well see, there's a very large difference (in my vocabulary, at least XD) between a "noob" and a "newbie". Newbies are basically just new members, while noobs are people whose MO is basically the opposite of most everything on Goldie's list up there. XD And yeah, I wouldn't call you a newbie anymore; you've been here over a year now. XD
