Yes, an entire THREAD dedicated to foxes!!!

Not fictional ones either, real ones.

You see, in a few years, I'll be moving to Japan. (After I get married) And I'm going to buy a fennec.

I already found a Japanese breeder though, what a blessing!!

So I've been doing some research recently on Fennecs since I could get info on White Arctics, which is what I originally wanted. But I've decided to buy and raise a baby fennec instead.

So here's some info for anyone who doesn't know.

First off, you must NEVER EVER let them outside in a non-enclosed area--if you have a back yard with an enclosed fence you're fine--if you do, IT *WILL* GET AWAY AND YOU WILL NEVER SEE IT AGAIN. You might get it back, but very very unlikely. No matter how much training you give it, its instincts will take over when it's back in its untamed home (the wild outdoors).

A leash will do, but if something startles it, it'll slip out of the collar (yeah... they'll do that... relatively easilly I believe. Even a full-body harness isn't safe). So if you go somewhere active and want to take your little buddy along with you, use a travel-cage.

As for their diet, grapes/rasins, chocolate, and pork are OFF... all are toxic to them. They're not very picky, however, and will probably even snatch at your lunch right off your plate!! So a little people food every now and then won't hurt (I don't suggest you let them eat the stuff all the time though).

Yes, that's where I got all my info, but not my breeder info, only that it's illegal to take them out of Canada (who knows why? But they're everywhere... USA... Japan... they're actually native to Saudi Arabia and some surrounding countries...) ...I don't suggest you get one from Canada unless you either already live there or are looking to get arrested... SUCKS DON'T IT!?!? Yarh... (No I'm not a pirate)

If you're looking to move to Japan and want a family pet, get a fennec fox. You can't let a pet outside in Japan and you can't let a fox outside anywhere, so there's no downside.

But you'd better be able to take one on, read the information on taming and vaccination. THESE ARE NOT DOGS OR CATS AND HAVE TOTALLY DIFFERENT NEEDS!!!

O_O woaah... fennec foxies.... part of me wants one!! The other part is like "Waah wild animal! needs to be free!"

As much as I love foxes (and come on, I think it's obvious that I do!) I am still debating with myself on my desire to actually get one. They are, still wild and...they spray...a lot. XD Although fennecs aren't as bad as regular foxes.

What I want is one of those tame foxes the Russian dude bred in... Russia. Yeah. I forget the name. >.>

*checks internet* Here. Russian scientist Dmitri Belyaev bred tame silver foxes, that acted more like dogs than foxes. There are still living ones today, although I don't think they export them as pets. :'(

I think foxes are wonderful and cool. But I would feel a bit weird about keeping a fennec if you have to be so careful they don't run away.

Plus my cats wouldn't like it....

Not really careful, but just don't take 'em outside irresponsibly. If you do take them outside, it's got to be on a harness and leash in a quiet place... or for the louder places a carrier.

I know about the Silvers though... ^^ that's like the first thing I ran into on my quest.

Oh, and Teto from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is labeled a fox-squirrel but is most likely a fennec.

I know he is, and I know what he's supposed to be, but look, listen, and watch. look: He doesn't resemble a squirrel except for the stripes, but those aren't even right, a real fox squirrel's stripes go down, his are across. His ears are like a fennec's and he has fangs and no visible incisors. Listen: Here, I'll link you to some fennec fox sounds. Watch: See how he acts? Like a fox or a cat. Not a squirrel (Except maybe the sniffing)

I found list spots but the price range for a baby was about $750-$1000. And $1000-$1250 for an adult female... sick isn't it?

That...has nothing to do with this thread. XD This thread =/= Jam Session. XD;

At any rate, I wouldn't keep a fox ever, I don't think. They haven't really been domesticated very well, if at all (note how running away is the first thing on this type of fox's list of things to do), so I'd rather leave them where they belong.

I love Fennecs a lot, but at the end of the day they're still wild animals. I'm not sure how good of a pet they'd be. Really especially in the cramped living conditions in the major Japanese urban areas (not really sure where you're moving. Hehe).

Exotic pets are expensive. That's pretty much the long and the short of it... They require special care and (in the states at least) a special license just to own. They're gonna cost a large chunk of money.

I guess for me, it's just a dream of mine to own a fox...but not all dreams come reality...there are soooo many more important things to think about.

I guess I have my sights set realistically... and realistically I am sure that in the near future I will not be owning a fox...so I have set my sites lower...and toward a Shiba Inu... they look almost identical to foxes except their fluffy tail is curled. xD

I've had a love affair with foxes since I was about four years old, and there was a time after fnding out you could get a license for a Fennec that I really wanted one, but it really occured to me that it wouldn't be at all like owning a dog or a cat. Those guys have had thousands (if not more) of years of conditioning to get used to being human companions. Fennecs haven't. They're still wild animals, and even when raised by a human from birth, will still have many of the traits of a wild animal. It's a wonderful idea, but I think (especially if you're living in Japan) you're going to have too much on your hands as it is to worry about such a high maintenance pet.
