Oh, but the real kicker is "How."
Rather than serve a life sentence, Light tries to convince Ryuk to write down all his enemies' names in his own death note. Ryuk heartily agrees, and proceeds to write down Light's name, just like he said he would in one of the earlier chapters.
Can't say I particularly feel sorry for him either.

Even more so with his roomanji name of "Raito". can also be thought of as "write" or "right"...

I just can't decide what I think about Death Note. I've read some of the manga, but I just am not sure if I like it yet. I think I should watch the anime and see what I think of it.
When I was certain he was going to kill me, my mind went blank, and I didn't have any hope anymore. And the only thing I could do was scream my lungs out. I felt so helpless, I couldn't even bring myself to believe someone might save me. Then you showed up, Al. And I realized that if we don't take care of each other, then no one else will. So I'll do anything in my power to get our bodies back, even if it means being the military's lapdog. And we'll just have to hope our powers are good enough to help us rise above our own limits. Cause we're not gods. We're humans. Tiny, insignificant humans who couldn't even save a little girl.

I think it might be because the official Viz translation started out with using "Light."

I used to be all hardcore about how L is better than Light, but going back over the series, I'm not sure anymore. L is just as arrogant, calculating, and cold, really, and his "name" could also indicate a god-complex. He's only got his quirkiness going for him. I feel like it's just reached a point where I don't actually like any of the characters, but many of them fascinate me. I still love the series, though.

Really, when you look at it objectively, the only thing L has going for him is that he's batting for the side of justice, and not a self-worshipping mass murderer.

Throughout the series I didn't so much support anyone as I favored Light's antagonists.

If I recall correctly, the author explicitly stated that the romanization should be "Light."
