Define "romantic love" and how it seperates from "brotherly love".

"Brotherly love" is totally unselfish and puts the needs of the other person above your own. "Romantic love" puts the other person above everyone else as well.

I may have summed that up way too much; others may feel free to expand on it and/or correct it. ^_^;

No I'm not doing your homework for you. :eyeroll:

But in all seriousness, brotherly love is platonic.

it's not my homework. I am trying to explain someone the difference and can't quite pin it. XD

I don't know if you put the other person above all others as well, you can have a best friend, and a boyfriend. And love them both the same. o.o
( with a different flavor, but how is the flavor explained? T.T )

The truth is, sure, you can have a best friend and a significant other, but, no you can't love them both the same. It just doesn't work that way.

when you think brotherly love, think kindness towards others, or an other way of thinking of it is love for a general group of people or love for your fellow human being

romantic love is the love that is admires physical beauty and is typically shared between two individuals

actually, your significant other and your best friend should be the same thing. You can have a close friend that would otherwise be your best friend. But the best romantic relationships should be more than just physical attraction and admiration. sooner or later, you have to sit down with your better half and just hang out. My wife is more to me than some girl who I come home to everynight after work and take out to dinner from time to time. She's also the woman who I play Halo2 with and share my deepest feelings with. So basically, saying that the two can't be the same is BUSTED (yea, I love Mythbusters). However, If your significant other and your best friend are 2 differant people then... yea... they are differant.

but still Wife=Best friend

...or perhaps it is true that in fact you share both kinds of love with your wife...

just offering an other perspective, not trying to disagree

In a general sense, brotherly love mostly differs from romantic love in the following:

"Dude, you're cool but no, I do not want to procreate with you or engage in any activity that may lead to that. Thank you."

At least, that's my personal view. Heh.

: : high-fives Mave for taking it to the bottom line : :

The Loves According to Raiden

Brotherly love = putting the other person before yourself

Romantic love = brotherly love + hormones

YMMV.

Brotherly Love is when she says:"I like you as a brother."
Romantic Love is when she says:"I like like you as in really like like you!"

I disagree with you needing to be phyisically attracted to a person to romantically love them. I crushed before my hormones ever started playing wild....

Rai, Mave, you two win for having the best posts. XD

In reply to Hakaii's post, yes, your wife/husband should be like a best friend, but you shouldn't treat your best friend like you treat your wife/husband. Why? Go read Rai's and Mave's posts, they both explained it very well. XD

Well it is true that you can "crush" before your hormones really wreak havoc on your mind/life/wellbeing [XD], but I'm willing to bet there's some physical attraction involved. Besides, a "crush" doesn't fit under any definition of love I use. XD

P.S. I really should have posted this last time, but . . .

It's simple: Would you kiss your best friend full on the mouth? Would you shake your wife's hand?
As for myself, I'm afraid that due to 25 years' worth of lack of experience, I have very little to say on the subject of romance. On the other side of the proverbial coin however, I can only say that I don't believe in "best friends". I just think it intones favoritism, which doesn't belong in friendships.
