Some advice needed.

This is not something I would normally ask about; indeed, it is something I am rarely even concerned with. However, the time is coming for my Junior-Senior Prom, and some problems have arisen. I have been asked to prom by my friend's ex-girlfriend. Normally, this would not be a problem, but it stretches back a long way. He and she had problems in their relationship, and wound up breaking up and getting back together a grand total of 17 times, that I counted. I may be wrong, but I think that is a rough estimate. Afer they broke up for the last time, he turned aloof and would not speak to any of his friends for about three months. I am in the dark as to what went on during that time, as I haven't brought the subject up - he holds grudges, and has a short temper, so it is better to not mention that. His friendship means more to me than any relationship with a girl ever would; he has been my best friend since we were born. I do not know how he would react to me taking her, and although I have no inherent dislike of the girl, he might, and I do not wish to hurt him. I don't want to turn her down without legitimate reason, as that would be rather ungentlemanly. If that is even a word. You get my point, in any case...I do not know what to do. Relationships have never concerned me, have never been a problem; I have been happy being single these past seventeen years, but I see nothing wrong with going to the prom; it is one of those things you will remember all your life, and I have realized just how little time I have left in my school years, and I want to cherish them. Regardless, what should I do about this?

Explain your concerns to her. That's more than a legitimate reason to say no.

P.S. Don't worry about boy-girl relationships this early ~ they needn't be a concern of yours yet.

You needn't tell me of the flaws of dating at seventeen; I preach that myself to my peers. The whole concept is almost revolting to me.

I would also suggest explaining your concerns to her, and that your friendship with your best friend means a lot to you.
K. Ayato: What happens if you press the small red button?

mechana2015: Does that answer your question?

K. Ayato: Perfectly.

Yeah, thanks. I see where you are coming from. The thing is, I almost want to take her, I think. It could be...fun. I will have to think about this some more, and I cannot let false emotion cloud my judgement and stop me from doing the logical thing.

I would explain to her that you don't want your face kicked in by your best buddy.

Seriously though, tell her that you don't want to hurt either of them, so you have to decline for the good of everyone.
